Samples: Longplayer Bells

I was inspired by the Longplayer project/song
http://longplayer.org/

I got to thinking about how to musically represent time/change/history/religion/science/myth etc.
So the idea of this piece is that the Longplayer song plays as it is intended (for 1000 years without stopping), there is other music and rhythms surrounding the pure sound of the chinese bells that are used to produce the song. Over time the origins of how this music started become clouded and lost. Myth, legend and even religion step in to describe why the tones must keep playing. The songs purity comes and goes and there is a messy history surrounding the song and the people/civilizations that are a part of it. In the end Longplayer returns to its simple starting bell tones, perhaps attended to by a small group of dedicated monks or other gathering that wants to see what happens at the end of a thousand years of non-stop music. Perhaps they will go for another 1000 years.

Thanks for Particledots chant samples which brought further enhancements to this project. In case you're interested the time signature changes throughout the song, moving from no time sig, to 7/8, to 4/4 and back again.

UPDATE:
6-16-2011
Just ran across some notes I had when I was composing this song. Thought they may be an interesting look into the song "story" as I was putting all the pieces and parts together.

So the different song sections were labeled as such in my notes:
Intro - In the beginning there were bells
pt.1 - Tribal Religion/Losing the Path
pt.2 - Psychochant
pt.3 - Darkness
pt.4 - Psychochant revival
pt.5 - 1000 Voices
pt.6 - Long journey back
pt.7 - Purity of tone

What a cool concept Chris. This is very well done in all aspects...love the 7/8 groove. The chanting really creates a heavy vibe, love it. Killer groove at around 4.05, Kicbal, I really dig this. Great job!

Thanks
This was really one big experiment that took a while to piece together. I did feel like a bull in a China Shop, thrashing around the ambient genre that usually requires a more measured and delicate approach. But hey, I don't do subtle very well with my music.

sounds amazing on headphones. really cool atmospheric track. love those halting synth sounds and how it oscillates through the various elements. i particularly enjoyed the section from 3.55. those stuttering synth sounds are fantastic. cool beats throughout. didn't really hear much in the way of chanting - would have liked to have heard more.

It felt like 10 years
getting this thing complete. True the chanting is really more of a gregorian mens chorus singing, and I did use it sparingly. I also rhythmically chopped up the chants in some of the transition parts. Just something I thought would sound cool. Thanks for the in-depth listen and comments.

Fascinating idea, and a cool result. I'd have liked the piece even without the explanation, but it does give you something to think about. It's a tasty stew of sounds.

!
From the haunting prayer bowl, all the way through the subtle build to the cool percussion and back again it's all great.
Very cool, very ambient. Your experiment was a great success Chris.
Is that your effected sax at 4.18? I really like that effect. Very disturbing and "droney" but somehow familiar. I'm sure that noise is used loads in movies. I love it!
Kicbal said 2313 days ago (December 22nd, 2010)
As always
Appreciate your careful listen and comments. I got some song ideas stewing (I just said stew again), that may benefit from your cool guitar styles. Be well.

Cool concept, and you built it up quite nicely. Complementary sound choices and clean sounding production. Tempo changes hold interest.

Thank you for listening. During the production of this, I had 18 tracks of bells at one point before I put them into one stereo track, did some pre mastering , then dumped it back into the song to make the rest of the mix easier to deal with. So yes, lots of stuff thrown into the . . . Stew.
