Description
Merry Christmas from the band around the head of the siren.

Siren's Headband recently expanded from 3 to 5 members, Adding Natalie Scibetta (Strangedream) and Scott Fugate (Scofugate) to the existing band consisting of Daugrin, Tonestones and Awigze.

Natalie is now our Queen Siren and we all bow to her with musical merriment.

This first tune of the new lineup consisted of the following:
- 2 unbelievably great tracks of vocals from Natalie.
- 13 tracks of outstanding drums from Scott.
- A fantastic solo tenor sax track from Andy.
- A howlin good wolf bluesy guitar solo track from Daug.
- Hammond B3 track from Tonestones.
- PRS "clean" jazz guitar track from Tonestones.
- Bass track from Tonestones.
- The "Headband Orchestral Section": Brass, Bassoon, Clarinet, Shakers, Glockenspiel, Cello, conducted by Tonestones.

Natalie wrote the original song (titled "Tomorrow") and shared it with the headband. Our handsome, young, energetic, multi-instrumentalist/composer/producer, Steve Stone (Tonestones), took it and reworked it into its current form.

Each of the contributors gave an inspired performance. However, it is Natalie who is really showcased here. None of us can believe the incredible range and soulful expression she brings to this piece.

Funny story about the origins of the vocal track. Steve gave Natalie the original backing tracks (in Em) and she sent back a beautiful vocal track, but said she thought it was too high pitched. It sounded perfect to me, but I transposed it up a minor third (to Gm) so that she could lower her vocals by an octave. She did the last verse an octave higher than the first two, which put her above her original range. I think you'll all agree it was a great performance.

I hope you enjoy this.

Tell Me
lyrics by Natalie Scibetta (strangedream)

How dare the sun come up when I feel so down?
I make the most of it when you decide to come around
Like Tarzan swinging through the trees
You bring out the snake in me
How dare the sun come up when I feel so down?

Tell me, everything I want to hear, oh
tell me everything I want to hear oh

Baby I can't get enough of your sorrow
You bait me, but will you love me tomorrow?
I try so hard to be so sweet,
But you bring out the beast in me.
How dare the sun come up when I feel so down?

Tell me, everything I want to hear, oh
tell me everything I want to hear oh

How dare the sun come up when I feel so down?
I make the most of it when you decide to come around
Like Tarzan swinging through the trees
You bring out the snake in me
How dare the sun come up when I feel so down?

Tell me everything I want to hear
tell me everything you want to do to me
tell me everywhere you want to take me
tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me.

Has element
of old school r&b in it, as well as lounge jazz but with a pop drive behind it. This would be a great one to perform live I bet. Great song, pretty much perfect!

Multi-genres
From the very beginning I wanted this tune to have a variety of themes and genres. It does kind of jump around a bit for fun. I would love to hear this done live, but unfortunately the band is spread all across the US!

Oh and..
Just to expand on Andy's comment.. I must translate for him. I used to live in Texas and they have some odd expressions there... The whole "kidnap, hold you hostage while we make you record for us". Is Texan for: "Very fine job.. Let's do it again sometime soon.."

Arrangement
It was a labor of love. From start to finish about 2 weeks (while working on a dozen other things). I think we're all proud of the results. BTW, the Holy part is probably due to the upload date of Xmas eve. It can't help but rub off a little.

Good tune
great playing and singing all around.

In general this arrangement sounds very good. All the parts are A-ok and mixed nicely together. But I'm not really happy about that synth & sax solo that starts around 2:00. If it's a sax solo then the sax should be mixed more forward, and if it's a synth solo then I need to hear a slightly more interesting part. This is largely just holding chords in moderately interesting ways. Same thing at 3:15: either more sax or more synths. I want to hear someone play sixteenth notes. Note three different people doing quarter notes.....

Anyway, the whole thing sounds great. Kudos all around.

tonestones said 2400 days ago (December 26th, 2010)
Mixing...
I have had sooo many mixes of this. The last part to come in was the sax. I was trying to find a balance between the sax and vocals that made the sax an extension of the voice.

As for the sections at 2:00 (repeating later). I had intended them to be musical spacers, coming off of the really strong chorus ("Tell Me" part), leading into the bluesy guitar stylings of The Wolf. I didn't want it to be too busy.

I'm glad you liked it.

Vocal tracks
Michael, you weren't the only one with this observation. I appreciate the comment. Natalie's vocal performance is amazing in this piece. It is always difficult finding the right balance in a large production like this.

Catchy tune, great playing
What would help most is pre-flight planning (you take a solo at bar x) or a bit less even-handed post production. I know it's a collab, but at times there's just too much going on to hear on a first listen. Open it up a bit. By my third listen, I'm sorting out the individual parts (which ARE great) and really enjoying it. It sure sounds like y'all are having fun. I'm looking for some outstanding music as the group jells with the new additions.

Thanks, Henry. I notice you're from Pflugerfille. I lived in Round Rock for most of the 90s. Great area.

I know what you mean about the density of the performance. I tried to keep it simple, but just couldn't make myself... Like Andy said, sometimes you just can't stop the band from playing.

Cool song
Great vocals Natalie. Cool song. Massive collaboration but, after several listens, I can't help but get the feeling that too much is trying to be fitted in to the mix. A slightly less busy version might have even greater impact and really put Natalie's vocals at the forefront of the song. Thanks for the posting. Regards, Peter.

Busy bees
It is a bit dense. I agree. I tried to simplify things a few times, but then I'd realize I was cutting some of my favorite parts. Daug, for example, had sent me some really great blues guitar parts, but I ended up only using a fraction of them. There is always next time.

what a song! This is great, especially the vox and sax, but I think the vocal line needs to be more prominent in the mix, it's quite a rich & powerful score underneath!

Several comments have pointed this out. I have a remix which I think is much better (primarily opening up Natalies part a bit more). I wish there were a way to update the mp3, but I'd have to post another version. Maybe sometime...

Glockenspiel
Love that word, Natalie is some singer and I agree this shows a woman at her best! but I must say that the complexity in the arrangement is outstanding and to have all this done via the internet is amazing an incredible song the ending was spectacular btw!

The mighty little Glockenspiel
I love the word also. I used to play percussion in the school band. I was one of the few percussionists who could read both horizontal AND vertical notes on the staff so I usually played the glock, timpani, bells, etc. Ever since then I've loved the sound. I use it when I want to add a little high frequency percussive color to an arrangement.

I'm glad you like the arrangement. It is kind of on the edge of being a little too complex, but that is what I find most interesting.

The ending is what I call the "orchestral dismount, stick the landing", to use a gymnastics metaphor.

wonderful band! i wish natalie's voice was a little more prominent, although that might be an intentional mixing decision - i realize it's all subjective. this song feels a little more accessible (to my admittedly simple ear) than some other of the sirens offerings, which for me at least, is a real bonus. congrats to all - and scott's work in here is stellar!

we were going for a particular sound. I think it worked. unless there is too much sax... then it didnt work. but we were going for a synthesis of reed and voice. I hope it worked, but at any rate it is something we strive and thrive on.
