Description
It would be funny if they were being silly by wearing shirts with their own faces. But they're Nickelback and they've made a career out of not getting the joke.

I also have a song. I've had this song for about 13 years and never could find a decent way to arrange it. This is probably the best it will get. Who among us doesn't have ten 90 minute cassette tapes full of song ideas that you never went back to finish? At one point it really freaked me out that I had some good ideas being unexplored, but what can you do? I don't have time to record the finished songs I have. So I wrote a song about not being able to write songs. This is song number 50 for me and I just passed my 3 year anniversary here at MJ. Good times. Good people.

Lyrics
I sit on the floor of my favorite room
Trying to figure out what happened to my life
I try to put some words to a song I wrote years ago
But it won't come out right
Thought I've tried and I've tried I'm gonna put it away
'Cause I'm just gonna get fed up.
But I know later on when the frustration is gone
Everything is gonna be alright.

I've got a stockpile of unfinished songs
Sitting on a table in my room.
They're 30 seconds long and they're destined for failure
I sing them out of tune.
And I'm more than certain that they'll stay how they are
'Cause songs don't write themselves.
But I know later on when the frustration is gone
Everything's gonna be alright.

It's been several years since I had a girl to write about
So I'll just resurrect one from my past
I've written this song so many times
That I should be embarrassed.
But embarrassment requires someone hearing this song
And there's no real danger of that.
Yeah I know later on when the frustration is gone
Everything's gonna be alright.

Not so sure why I still even bother
I'm not going anywhere
I'm not cut out for being a rock star
And I don't even care
But there's something inside that I can't shut off
So I'll continue bleeding notes and words
And I know later on when the frustration is gone
Everything's gonna be alright.

Mother of Ironman
I think I wrote this song a few times myself, but I think "I cranked up the arena run to 10" and used it as a lyric. I also sang it out of tune.

What amazes me on this tune is how you're able to sing such wordy lyrics and make it work in a song. I look forward to your song about game night where you sing about all the words used in a game of Scrabble.

I like the ending. It's a nice change and it left me wondering if you would ever finish the song. Just kidding. It sounds great.

Mother of Ironing
I may right a song about Scrabble game night. But you'll never hear it because it will sit unfinished for decades.

OK. Enough with the BS. When are we going to cut to chase and just go BMX racing?

Once again I'm digging the Weezer influence. The lyrics are a riot! I think we can all identify with what you're saying.

Been there/done that
I figured everyone at MacJams has this same story. Except for maybe the part about not having a girl for a year or two. Maybe your lady luck surpassed mine. Judging by the funk in your bass zone, I'd imagine you were a real Hugh Hefner. Even if you are a Tampa Bay Rays fan :).

Congrats on the 3 years and 50 tunes
Great job you've done with this one. Reminds me a bit of Camper Van Beethoven - a real fave of mine. The synth turnaround is killer - and your vocals are spot on. Cool outro. I gotta get some tricks on my tracks.

Camper
If I'm noodling in my room there's a 80% chance I'm going to be playing Take the Skinheads Bowling. Thanks for listening and stay warm in all the snow. Also make sure someone doesn't sidescrape your car with a loader. Did you see that vid? Wild.

5 Extra Arms
I'm glad you picked up on it. Even though the chorus of the song is guitar heavy, I wanted to the bulk of the verses to be software instruments. It was difficult - but fun - to use the different approach.

Someday This Won't Seem Important
This my current theme song. Well let's say the theme song for my work in my studio over the last couple years. I feel your pain, cuz it's not just your pain, it's mine, and I have a feeling a lot of other peoples around here. It's the pain that comes from being a creative person.

I am reminded of a great quote from the painter Rousseau who said, "If you don't know what's wrong with a painting, turn it to the wall and don't look at it for two weeks. Then look at it. If you don't know what's wrong with it then, you never will."

I have a lot of songs like that, hundred in fact...

and I had to laugh at:
"But embarrassment requires someone hearing this song
And there's no real danger of that."

You nailed it. Thank God for MJ, it let me get at least some of them out there so I could embarrass myself...

RR

Giving noodlers an outlet for embarrassment since 1932. I, too, think that it's a common story among the MJ residents. There may be a few who have a compulsion to finish and record every idea, but I would imagine they're among the minority. Best to you in 2011!

Some we're just not meant to finish. They have a way of speaking up and demanding attention if they're important. I agree with the hook, everything is going to be alright. I can relate to this song. Well sung, produced, and arranged.

Thanks Dave
I agree with you on the good ones speaking up. But it's still in the back of my head that there could be a good song buried in those tapes. Back in 2002 I made a resolution to finish two songs a week (this was pre-marriage and pre-kids). I did it for one week and was able to get one good song out of it. So that just fuels the "what if?" fire. Thanks for listening!

something inside that i can't shut off
great tune man, witty and insightful and a good time. bet you distracted bob with some bad tamale meat while you raided his synth rack. songs don't write themselves, but jokes do - you can take nickelback out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer out of nickelback. rock on. ps., dig the T.Rex outtro.

Nice rack
Thanks, dude. I like my tamale meat like I like my women; bad to the bone. I was simply sharing with him. And since he was in the hospital and couldn't go BMX riding with me I figured he wouldn't mind if I got filthy nasty on his Synthophone 1600.

Weezer
Yeah Eric I think it's time you set Rivers Cuomo free from your basement ....
but seriously this great stuff, love that distorted guitar chorus and the little lead quaking away in the left ear. Your vox on this are outstanding, coupled with clever and witty lyrics this is a starter for ten as one of my all time fave MJ tracks.
Happy 50 songs dude.

The Weez
If I had Rivers locked away I'd not steal his tunes, but ask him to play Songs from the Black Hole for me and explain the whole thing. Then we'd probably go to the sock hop together so the whole town could see us together, hand in hand. Then later we'd go to his parents' house and have a tickle fight.

Thanks for the compliment! There's a lot of 2011 left so I've got my fingers crossed that I can finish in the top 1400.

my favourite room
ha ha great song!
love the guitar riff around 2:30 or so.
nothing to be embarrassed about here.
embarrassment is being from the same country as nickelback.
I think it's great to have lots of ideas lying around, any one can be raided if inspiration fails...
great singing and music, lots to think about with the lyrics...
love it!

embarrassed. Even though we have Canada to blame for Shania Twain and Nickelback, you've given us so much more positive than negative. Trust me. I'm from the country that brought you Vanilla Ice and Billy Ray Cyrus. Thanks for listening!
