Melody man
Yep, that's me, melody and variations, at least until the bass line hijacks the song for a while. Thanks for listening and commenting.

To me,
It sounds like cowboys playing this around a campfire on a cattle drive...if they still do things like that. :) Thanks.

Happy Trails
Ha-hah .. I'm more of an urban cowboy .. trying to avoid getting run over by a taxi stampede .. than a Rowdy Yates hanging around the cattle drive campfire. Still, maybe a little bit of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans lingers in the DNA of my music.

Sweet
Another Warren Smith song! Always look forward to your quirky and fun approach to music. Enjoyed it as always. This sounds like it belongs in a movie soundtrack

Achievement
Quirky & fun? If I can achieve that in a song, that's fine with me. Thanks for listening, repeatedly.

Somewhat manic
but great fun.

Jonathan Richman meets Don van Vliet

Happy New Year :-)

Cheers

Manic music
I'm okay with "manic," as long as it's not followed by "depressive."

Cheers to you, too.

An enjoyable listen
I can imagine these guys doing something similar with words :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeKlDUKkxhE

There's something quirky and off-kilter here that makes for a most enjoyable listen Warren. Thanks, and best wishes for 2011!

Case of the quirks
I don't know how this happens. I always start on-kilter .. then something just happens as I let the song go where it wants to go. Maybe I need to be more disciplined?

On to 2011!

That signature sound.
I almost heard a few Middle Eastern sounding licks in this. Your guitar work is spritely and entertaining. Ooh, now I hear shades of the Ventures. West Coast surf meets Brooklyn?

In the mix
Middle East? It must be a holdover from my Arabian Nights period : )

You know we surf here in Brooklyn, too. Well, not me, but they do. Well, not exactly in Brooklyn, but they do it about a hour from here, further out Long Island. Although I'm told the really big waves are at the end of the island in a place called Montauk. Of course, I grew up in the Midwest, far from the ocean beaches. But I did have a Ventures album. So maybe that means something.

Thanks for the comment!

Warren,
Shades of Les Paul. It has nordic or celtic influences and other stuff going on. Fine guitar work. I especially like the little "Twilight Zone" homage at the end, very clever.

In the Zone
I'm still kicking myself for not seeing Les Paul before he died - especially since I am working one block away from the Iridium Jazz Club, where he regularly played at the end of his distinguished career. This song was played on a Les Paul-style guitar.

It is said my great-grandfather carved celtic patterns in his stave church back in Norway. Maybe something genetic got passed down the line?

Thanks for the visit.

Born in a Minnesota blizzard, I'm now residing in a coastal heat of Brooklyn, New York City. I recorded my first original composition as a teenager using a reel-to-reel tape recorder back in 1967, and I'm still finding it a creative challenge... [see more]
