The Surge
this is cool Charles! i like your use of dissonance and the driving beat that makes this feel very "surge" like. very effective use of instruments and timing!

I enjoy
playing with dissonance quite a lot Karen.
But of course a little goes a long way.
Thanks for the kind comments and a Happy New Year to you my friend.
Cheers,
Charlie

Tension
Nice orchestration, and aptly titled; I feel the powerful surging quality. I also like the freedom you take with dissonance; this helps create the mood (tension). My only quibble is that my ears were wanting to hear a move away from the two-chord progression ostinato that forms the basis of this piece. But, as always, I liked it, and thought it very well done!

Sometimes
get locked into progression like this and I just don't want to escape.

But next time I'll see if I can find a spare key for anybody that does.

Thanks Clark and Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Charlie

What Dani said!
I think drama is the key element here. This has real power, and., yes, a surging feel to it. i think for the elngth of the piece, the progression really work.
How do you compose something like this? Do you imagine movies in your head?

One day, we really must collab ...

Bowman said 2367 days ago (January 3rd, 2011)
I haven't
collabed with anyone here but I think one day we should give it a go. It would be a thrill and a privilege to work with you Steve.

As for composing... I have a film background so I guess on some level I'm always seeing images but I more often here rhythms and melodies running through my head and try to get them into a computer before they're gone. Then I continually play and edit until they begin to take a form that works. Not always but this and a lot of pieces do develop this way.

And I'm in awe of you who not only comes up with great tunes but memorable lyrics that always seem to work.

Cheers and have a Happy New Year my friend,
Charlie
