Description
I have been told my songs need bass and drums, so here they are. I still can't figure out drum programming software for the life of me, so I just used a cheap keyboard that has multiple drum beats to choose from. The bass line is also from the keyboard since I don't own a bass guitar. I'm not sure I like the short little keyboard solo near the beginning. I forgot to fill that section in and I didn't feel like setting up the electric guitar again, so I used the keys with the banjo and oboe setting - sounds cheesy I think.

I am heavily inspired by old English ballads. This is a traditional folk song that I first heard from Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. Needless to say, I took most of the folk elements out of it. This version is also partly inspired by Jim Moray's take on the ballad.

In this song - incest, sibling murder, lies and betrayal. My kind of song.

Lyrics
Fair Lucy she sits at her father's door,
A-weeping and making moan,
And by there came her brother dear:
'What ails thee, Lucy Wan?'

'I ail, and I ail, dear brother,' she said,
'I'll tell you the reason why;
There is a child between my two sides,
It’s from you dear brother and I.

And he has drawn his good broad sword,
That hung down by his knee,
And he plunged it into Lucy’s heart
Oh lord, how she did bleed.

Oh son my dear, pray tell to me.
What’s the blood upon your sword?
It’s the blood of my grey mare.
She would not run anymore.

Your grey mare’s blood was not so red,
Oh son don’t lie to me.
It’s not the blood of my grey mare.
It’s the blood of my sister Lucy.

What will you do when your father comes home.
Now son come tell to me.
'I shall dress myself in a new suit of blue
And sail to some far country.'

And when will you be back again.
When will you return to fight?
When the moon it rises in the day.
And the sun will rise in night.

Firsties!
Definitely moving forward with the production - and the song choice is great. Nothing like nasty family intrigue to stir the emotions. Everything sounds great here - I'm fine with the keyboard break - doesn't sound cheesy to me - but then again I love cheese.

LoFi Is The New HiFi
All the best music these days in my opinion seems to be hashed out on crappy little instruments...at least in the Indie/Alternative genre. So if you feel the need to splurge...don't.
BTW- This song is great and you have a great gothic/edgy sounding voice

Agreed
LoFi is the new HiFi. Think about bands like The White Stripes, Jacob Golden, Beck, and The Black Keys. They've recorded with old materials in bedrooms, basements, parking garages, churches, and the like. Its not so much about the pristine recording as it is soul. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing this one and for bud pointing this one out.
