Can't See The Line (w/sonnyjim)

Description
SonnyJim and I wrote and recorded this song in Brooklyn when I lived there and we were still jamming in person, rather than remotely, as we do now, my being a Left Coaster. It was recorded in Bias DECK, which I used before Logic, so I can't go back and remix it, unfortunately. The drums are unremarkable, we usually just turned on the drum machine and let it fly, preferring to bang out 2 or 3 songs in a day (man, remember those times) and be spontaneous. This one is probably more influenced my me, my being the rock standard power pop oriented one in the duo. SJ did the lead vocals and I did the backing vocals, all recored in one shot, at the same time, no overdubs or punch-ins. I played all the instruments, guitars, basses (there are two - one does a lead bass melody thing). It's a fun song. I've always liked it, in it's simple straightforward kind-of way, and still do, enough to want to post it all these years later. It certainly doesn't stand up to the production values I have have learned by now, but whatever. Oh, and thanks SJ for the agreement to post it. Happy New Year all!

Lyrics
Can’t See the Line
© 2003 racerat from MacJams.com

I have feelings
Too many
They confuse me
All the time

Where is yours
What is mine
Where is yours
What is mine
I can’t see the line

I’ve lost people
Too many
Yeah they haunt me
All the time

Where did she
What did I
Where did she
What did I
I can’t see the line

I’m giving it away
I’m taking it away
Watching night become day

I have sorrows
Too many
They depress me
All the time

What did you
Why did I
What did you
Why did I
I can’t see the line

I’m giving it away
I’m taking it away
I can’t see the line

Thanks Char. It was long ago, and SJ has a way of ad-libbing, so I can't be totally sure, much of the lyrics might be SJ's. Beatles? If you've heard them, and your are a musician, how can't there be an influence?;-)

Very good rocking pop tune. I love rhythm guitars. They have a nice Jane's Addiction jangle to them. Great production and mix!

Jane says
I was a big Jane's Addiction fan at the time. I have always loved a jangling guitar and a power pop tune, a sucker for a hook I guess. Production was hit or miss in those days, but maybe this is one of the better ones, or maybe I just lucked out. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

This is awesome guys! Love the lyrics and the way you deliver them is right on! Great job, now we need this on Gaylen's IPOD, since I don't own one :(

hey Kiddo! Where you been? Sop glad you decided to heed the call and come back to the fold, if only to listen to my ancient ditty. Been doing any music? I have this song I might like you to sing on, a slow ballad-y one. Interested? Send me an email, it's still the same. If not, no worries, just glad to have you here...

Yeah!.
I have no awareness of how things were recorded pre-digital era, but considering this was as close to a one-take live performance recording with almost no tweaking, it is a splendid accomplishment.

pre-D
Hey Leon, it was digital actually. Bias Deck was an early mac multitrack program, much like Logic, but a lot clunkier. Bias still makes it, but it is a real also-ran in the world now. It's funny, I chose it over Logic at the time (when Logic was pre-Apple acquiring it) but then I bought a Betamax over a VHS recorder, so that tells you a little about my luck in the ongoing format wars...;-) Yeah, it was simpler then, and in may ways, better for the creative muse...
loved your new song by the way-- welcome back!

If it wasn't for MacJams, my catalog of music would still have an over-all audience of 5 people - as it was for about 15 years. Without computers and file transfers, I'd be one lonely multi-tracking mofo. Thanks for the listen Magna-- vrooooom.

Yo! In da house!
The Yamaha MTX-1 was my baby. I replaced the drive belt on it 3 times, and the recording heads twice, just burned through them. I loved those old 4 track days. Punch-in and ping pongs. 6 tracks and you were done. NEXT! Hope you are all dug out of the snow by now, my Bro told me it took 4 days for the plows to show up...brrrrr!

Unremarkable drums is MY trademark :). This is a solid song and I'm glad you posted it. Production value be damned. The feel is there and it does remind me of the days when you could check several songs off the list at once, rather than this one small part of the song. Great days. My favorite part is the bridge. It's very Rubber Soul but still fits in nicely with the rest of the tune. Great track.

This one begged a description I think. maybe a disclaimer was more like what it ended up sounding like. Glad you liked it. Spontaneity can produce a lot of coal and a few diamonds along the way. Waiting 8 years to post lets you figure out which is which!

Hey Steve,
Yup, that's why I like this one, the vocals sound like he MEANT it. Do I have more of these lying around? More than I'd like to admit. If I can convince SJ to let them see the light of MJ day, I will eventually! But don't sell yourself short my friend, you are being too modest, your production is killer and you know it! Loved your last one!

Can't See The Line
A very solid piece of songwriting in AABA format.
"I can’t see the line" is a good hook and the rest of the song develops the idea well. I like the guitar track, and the vocals are well done.
Really impressive considering you just banged it out.

AABA
Can't say That my song structures have ever been all that complex. I have a tendency to bang them out and then immediately forget the chords I played. That's why they make recorders, right?

LOL about the food reference. I was always a canned chili or rice and beans guy myself. It's always about the enthusiasm. I can tell from your posts of old stuff that it has always been that way for you, too. Love the energy, let the recording be the record and move on. NEXT!

chords
Thanks Graham. I think I was using a Fender Twin Reverb at the time, one of the mid 80's ones that was totally transistors rather than the much preferable tubes. The distortion had almost no personality or warmth whatsoever. I cringe at the fact I recorded about 200 songs using it. What was I thinking? Wasn't I listening at all? Well, live and learn...and remember to listen, I guess!

2 or 3 songs a day
Is it possible? You already knew a thing or two about songwriting and mixing by then, that's quite evident. Glad you decided to post it even with the drum machine. It reminds me a song doesn't need to be perfect to be excellent.

That was nothin'
I remember one epic weekend in the 80's where me, my brother and SonnyJim wrote and recorded about 9 songs a day over two days on my 4-Track. Almost filling a 90 minute tape. Some (decidedly NOT all) of them still stand up to this day. Not masterpieces, but full of spirit and energy! Man, where did I get the energy?

Firstly the song and performance are really instant and grabbed me right from the off. It doesn't get a lot better than this.

I just noticed the ratings !!! - unfair in my book, how can this have an average of 6.5 - don't agree at all. more like 10.00. I never normally rate anything but this time am insired to do so.
