Description
Inspired by what "Mumford & Sons" are doing very well, I took a return to playing as many instruments as I could: acoustic guitar, mandolin er...tambourine .. and came up with this, in some ways "Radiohead" influenced piece in 6/8:

It's an eternal love song/story: with the guy & gal being dead since they froze one cold winter.. but their souls never moved on, due to him holding her with his fond memories. When he realises this might be the case, he accepts to let her go, knowing in his heart, that he might not be yet able to move on...

Enjoy!

PS. Sorry, no download until later re-worked version is made. If you really want a copy of this version, just send your e-mail address to me in an MJ note and I'll send you one.

Lyrics
Here we hide from all that's new
Clinging, dearly, golden times

This house once was a home
Once was a place for living.

The harvest and the smell,
Of all of your home-made cooking.

When the bitter cold came,
And froze our love, so that we'll linger in Winter,
Never Spring
An' if I wish for heartbreak, providence.
I fear that, I'm sorry, the memories always stay.
Here in this past.

But pack all of your dreams,
And all of your love,
For this time..

When the bitter cold comes,
To freeze our love.
So that you'll linger in Winter,
No, no more
Because I prayed for heartbreak, providence.
I fear that, I'm sorry, the memories:
Here I stay,
An' dwell in this past.

And as God's my witness,
Sometime soon when all my selfish folly is all gone.
We'll be together, always,
And that I can leave this memory,
An' never again,
Dwell in this past.

Happy Hauntings!
The 6/8 time really gives this one a nice feel. And the mandolin is a nice touch as well. Enjoyed it!

Kinda jaunty .. and haunty.. lol
Thanks Joseph- trying to get a balance between his fond memories (happy) and some drama from those chord shifts in the refrain.. and a touch sadder .. but I agree it's overall quite upbeat and jolly.. which did originally make me doubt the direction my concept/lyrics took.

and glad your copy arrived safe and sound. 6/8 is fun .. I think I should do more in that time signature... bit of a pain when your DoD drum loops are mostly 4/4 :o( ... anyways, when I fix the vocals a bit, I'll remember to send you a fresh mix. Glad you liked the lyrics .. I think I could improve some lines here and there too.

I like the return to traditional instruments, as the general public get sick of over-produced music .. they find the best "real" live sound is easier achieved with such instrumentation.

Very fine
Very catchy and well done, with great lyrics! It seems to sit quite low in your voice, and I therefore wonder if you considered singing it in a higher key? Nice feel to the whole thing!

Thanks for the useful feedback...
funny you pointed at the key thing .. I played this capo 5th fret.. starting with G chord .. so err.. C! Which isn't a key I usually sing in (did it for the guitar vs mando sound really).. but I didn't intend the "low" vocal part as the lead (it was a kinda guide vocal track and was supposed to be used as beaf up backing vox).. if you listen again to 02:39? ish onwards (final refrain) .. I sing a 3rd part in higher register there.. and want to explore singing a lead part throughout this in a higher register .. but same overall key... I also didn't feel I got the "mood" or expressiveness into the vocals I wanted in many places .. plus some bum notes and rushed lines/timing to redo/fix... also some more exciting vocal reverbs/delays from Logic too. I threw this out for exactly this kinda feedback/guidance- so thanks! I didn't mind letting people hear how I sound in a lower register- which doesn't happen that often... easier to get some expressiveness and passion when singing in higher registers I find.

Thanks Steve ..

..ah yes, the mando use always I find makes people relate to what they have heard most with mando .. but I stick by the influences: Mumford & Sons "Winter winds" for the instrumentation, mix, style and some chords are akin to R'heads "Sulk" but now conspicuously in 6/8 time... and a verse not a refrain. No worries on the "cordoned off" project- I have some idea for a video for it that will keep me occupied.

Infectious.
Love so many of the sounds. That's a very sad story. Maybe, lines like: If I let you go, will you come back to me? In your new life, is there a place for me? It's been so long resting in this cold. I'm no longer warmed by memories of old.
Ah, see, I was getting into it. I really liked it, Alan. Thanks.

need to work on the vocals a bit more I feel in particular. Unlike the acoustic guitar, I need to work a bit more on a preset for Ozone recording the mandolin through my Rode NT1-A. Making presets like this is a great way to get up and running fast, and to develop a characteristic "sound"... something I don't mind for the different genres I dabble in.

Too kind John
doesn't most religions have a concept of heaven, hell and somewhere in between? I thought of this while writing this and if it isn't clear, it's not through choice the character has to stay but more to serve his penance, part of which being to let her go... an interesting notion that pulls at the heartstrings.

Nice to aquire an unfamiliar listener. I feel my voice is perhaps a little too easy going for this (certainly in the lower register). 6/8 is very fun for a mostly 4/4 rocker like myself, just wish some more drum loops catered for that .. ah well, I hope to aquire a Roland TD-9K set in the near future and do the drums myself.

I would like a better quality mandolin .. I've played better ones. It was also a bit peaky on the higher notes and required some automations to take the edge off it, not quite happy with the vocals and mandolin Ozone 3 recording/processing settings.

Nice tune mate, love the upbeat irish jigging folk contemporary pop tune! mandolin is an awesome instrument when played well. Luckily you do seem to have a certain talent in this area. Like this tune looking forward to the revamped version!

this makes my 3rd uploaded song playing mandolin: I'm not so much a player than a dabbler... strings and frets; it's not so hard to learn but the action is not for the faint-hearted.. keeps your fingers strong for acoustic guitar playing though. Plenty of excellent English and Scottish folk music too + I like how the banjo adds a touch of ethnic American folk as well.

Kinda "Wuthering Heights" with a twist: I actually got the ghost story theme idea from my g/f who suggested it from the working title. I said "Nah" .. then proceeded to write lyrics and kept coming back to the ghost story idea... so I ran with it.

Back for another isten
and some time to write a comment. Lovely sound here Alan - and I like the chords. I was surprised to see Mumford and Sons win "international artist of the year" on a local TV awards night - mainly because I'd never heard of them before. I quite like their style - and hence, I like this song too. It was good to see them come in ahead of some of the awful, talentless "stars" that seem to be inhabiting the airwaves these days.

Off the soapbox - just a very enjoyable listen Alan - nice playing, singing and writing - and no nits.

Best wishes for a brilliant 2011.

I've never felt so cheerful about a couple frozen to death and become ghosts who are having trouble moving on...ooh that reminds me of Beetlejuice with Michael Keeton!
