Description
I knew I wouldn't be gone THAT long! Actually I had some time to record over the New Year holiday and here's one I did the other night. As always, I'm backed by the inimitable Alan McPike (how he do this, I don't know, but he do!) This is dedicated to all our friends in England--here's to you mates!

Take care now,

Michael

My swing fix!
Have to hear some of that music from the era of professional lyricists and tunesmiths played by big bands and sung by professional vocalists. Not to say musicians since haven't talent, but there's not so much wit and savoir faire in more recent pop. You hit this one solidly over the fence.
Check out my latest song called Dive Bomber
michaeljayklein said 2306 days ago (January 5th, 2011)
O. Henry!
I think the one thing missing from many pop vocalists is that elusive thing called "tone" (probably a result of singing directly from the head voice more often than not these days); it all sounds so throaty or nasally to me (not that I'm always in the clear there either!)--still, there are some truly excellent artists out there who I greatly enjoy listening too. Thank you sir for the kind words--you take care now and keep up the fabulous work; I truly enjoy it big time! Michael

Dean
I remember many years ago when I worked at a radio station in my teens in Atlantic City, they had a charity softball game between Frank Sinatra's musicians and Dean Martin's boys. It was held at midnight at the local little league field. Only DJs, radio personnel and musicians were invited to this invent. I don't remember much, but I do recall Dean missing the ball twice and then Sinatra pitched a HUGE beach ball, which Dean finally managed to slug! Somewhere down here in the basement, I have a box containing a baggie which holds 3 of Frank's cigarettes butts (yes, I was a geek enough to run down to the dugout after they left and retrieve them!) Thanks again Scott--you are too kind! Take care and keep up the marvelous work you produce for us to enjoy. Michael

A crikey, 'cor blimey gov'ner
combo you got there: Alan McPike & your good self. Together you do this sound/song so much justice and it's seemlessly inseparable from the big bands & great crooners of the past.

Wry Nightingale
Good to hear another old song turned out with your customary polish and humour, Michael, and with a tasteful, beautiful accompaniment.

i understand that one can't be too mushy in a live setting (particularly as a male singer!) with hard-nosed bar-room types, or jazz lounge cynics, but i hope you won't mind if i tentatively suggest that there is the odd moment in this song when the tender sincerity of the melody is a tiny bit shied away from in your brilliant, humorous delivery, very pleasant and natural though it is, and furthermore no doubt of a piece with the rather defensive style adopted by most male vocalists who find themselves confronted with a number as romantic as this halfway through the set!

Half the trouble is that being a wartime song, and sung by the great Vera Lynn, this is rather a sacrosanct melody still for many over here in the UK, and makes cover versions of whatever colour rather problematic. Very Lynn recently released a collection of her old hits and it went straight to number one in the UK album charts and so she is the oldest artist ever to achieve the feat, still somehow a central part of the nation's consciousness in her nineties!

Anyway, Michael, thanks for the nod to us over here; its still a nice gesture, and a pleasant version in itself.

Cheers

Marc

Actually the intro sets the tone for the style of this arrangement and vocal (it's based somewhat on a light swing version Bobby Darin recorded). However if you found humor in this, perhaps I should quit singing (one never know, do one?) I'm a big fan of Vera Lynn, an of course, she was THE voice of England during wartime (I think the French had Edith Piaf, we had Kate Smith and you guys had Vera--it's a shame the three never recorded something together!) For someone who's left
you're not doing badly!

Another classy offering. An interesting take on this as I was expecting a very simple acoustic version (don't know why, maybe it's the lbstrat collabs!)

You're still swinging just as well as ever.

HNY!
