Description
Seems like ages ago – though it was only the second week week in December when I started hunting for a song to cover. I set myself a restriction of choosing only from tunes posted after December first. As a result I listened from the songs list by date and discovered a lot of great talent I might never have heard otherwise. The standout for me was kingkenny and the song you have here. From the first word line of the vocals I new it was my kind of song – and also that there was no way I could compete with the performance. It’s incredible – check it out: Crickets by kingkenny.
I wrote to kingkenny and started working on the song before I got their gracious reply. By the time I heard back the demo was done and in the APOD drop box for feedback. The result was a radical remix with new elements by Bryn that ended up becoming the APOD version of the song. I lifted parts of Bryn’s mix – namely his drum loops, organ, vox, and synthbass and used it as a change up in the middle section. Then as time went by Michael added a vocal track and Bryn added some more vocals and helped me tweak the mix.
I played Ibanez bass, Godin Session Strat guitar, numerous synths, drum and sound effects loops and some Spectral Dronemaker atmosphere – as well as singing lead.
Thanks to JD for hosting this great event – and to kingkenny for writing such an amazing song.
And thanks to everyone else listening and posting out there.

Popular song
and for good reason. The original is great, and the covers have been just as good. Great vocals, and and love the crunchy synth.

This is great, Bud
Something about these voices and vocals in the background. They're like an audible aura. The music is compelling. I enjoyed the whole thing. Nice choice for a cover. T

Good ears -
it was a real balancing act with backing vocals folding into the synths without losing their detail. Bryn helped with that aspect of the mix.

Iam in big trouble
Now I have to go hear all the originals to be able to comment adequately. But for now Inist say this great and like how this builds and enhances the meaning of the lyrics. Great job!

Thanks Vic
the middle section was interesting to do. I lifted most of Bryn's mix for that part and ten ad to find my voice and make sense of the effects. Pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Cool
I like the production on this. Cool bass synth sound, and i like the filtered vocal sound used here too. Great tune!

Bryn cooked up that synth bass
and the middle vocal is basically a tweaked megaphone setting in GB.

Crickets
Very Leonard Cohen in a way. Lovely warm atmosphere and a cool mix. Great selection of pads and saws. The lyrics are killer. A great choice and a great rendition.

It's interesting how many layers
it took me to create an atmosphere that only approximates what those guys did with basically 4 tracks. Ken's vocal in the original is so expressive that it really needs nothing around it.

Delicate
with room to move around the sounds. Love this subtle performance by all involved. Quirky sounds mixed with the traditional is an interesting exploration.

Another keeper...
Bud, you always do such interesting things with your arrangements either of your own or others' songs. There is something REAL about the recording/mix of this, an authentic sound that you get out of the band. I think the drum set has a particular presence: very dry, like it's right in the room. How you juggle all those loops and such just boggles my mind, and you do it so effortlessly. NICE.

How to compare to the original...
... really, I don't. This is a case of a cover that's both very much in keeping with the vibe of the original, and also very different. And very good. I hope to clear a few mins for the APOD version too.

Love that pic. Darkness, love it. Strangeness, even better. The incidental notes that flow through this are very effective. Sweet collab chaps.

I couldn´t think...
... more than "wtf, this is crazy" when the helicopter came in. Must admit to have loved the song with it's bar like mood (at least for me) but the helicopter just killed me (in a good way). What the hell were you thinking when you did that?

In other matters, i love the voice and the bluesy guitar behind the "i'm not you're son" is one of those things you know the song is bulit to get to, making a perfect climax (once again) with the helicpter and the endind part.
