Don't Bully Me w/ D. Jorden, my students, Ryan, TERRAPLANE, ktb, & kevmikwa

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is the follow up to What Kind of Person do You Want to Be. Once again my friend and colleague David Jorden came to me with the song idea. His original idea was to take it in a rap/metal direction. But while we were writing the song in the school's library, the media specialist said she thought it sounded kind of bluesy. I immediately tuned my guitar to open G, grabbed a slide out of my gig bag, and started playing a shuffle groove. The lyrics David had written just flowed so naturally, although I did have to convince David to go with it.

We continued to work on the lyrics, wanting to focus the third verse on how someone should handle a bully. As luck would have it Ms. Alexander, the school's social worker, was in the media center with her after school enrichment group. We asked her how the students are taught to handle a bully. She and her students explained the steps children are taught to take. The third verse is almost verbatim what they told us (I think we need to share some songwriting credit).

David and I then met one day after school to record a scratch vocal to a drum loop and my acoustic guitar. We now needed a band. I enlisted Ryan (my son) to contribute a bass line. I may be biased, but I think his performance would make Jerry Jermont proud. John (ktb) played killer piano and Hammond organ. Mike (kevmikwa) handled the drums, finger snaps, and handclaps with his usual precision. Terry (TERRAPLANE) gave the song that Little Walter vibe I wanted thanks to his authentic Green Bullet blues harp track. He also contributed a harmony vocal part in the chorus. Once all the parts were in place, I recorded David's lead vocal and my harmonies in my classroom.

The final touch was to add some students. I asked my after school 5th grade enrichment class to sing on the track. They all circled around a USB mic and sang along with Terry's harmony vocal track during the choruses.

Bob (five_extra_arms) once again contributed the perfect illustration.

Thanks to Dani (RAVENS), Karen (Magnatone), and Mike (kevmikwa) for their feedback and suggestions during the mixing.

D. Jorden: Lead Vocal
alackbass: Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Background Vocals
Ryan: Electric Bass
ktb: Piano & Organ
TERRAPLANE: Blues Harp & Background Vocals

Lyrics
Don't Bull Me
Words & Music by D. Jorden & alackbass

You don't like the clothes I wear,
Not even my shoes or my hair,
You laugh at what my parents make,
You're making fun of my weight,
You know the old saying's true,
What you're giving will come back to you

You say you can't dig my style,
When you look at me you never smile,
Every day an unpleasant surprise,
I'm either lame or you call me Four Eyes,
Some days I want to run away,
But there's something that I need to say,

Don't bully me
You can't bully me
Don't bully me
You can't bully me
I think it's time you change your plan
I think it's time I take a stand

I live in this world trying to do the best that I can,
But my brothers and sisters feel bad when you're always hating them
All the pain that I feel, and I know that you never can see,
I got a plan it's in my hand, I'll take a stand and I'm gonna be free

Here's what I'm gonna do,
I'm gonna act and I won't fear you,
I'll ignore you then I'll turn and go,
Stay in a group with some friends I know,
If you continue with your insults,
I'll get some help from a trusted adult,

Don't bully me
You can't bully me
Don't bully me
You can't bully me
I think it's time you change your plan
I think it's time I take a stand

This is...
... awesome! Such topics attract people, but you have a message in your writing. And to turn that message into a song makes it even more appealing (I'm a student myself!).

I like how you got the students' voices in the back and had your son play the bass; just a little more personal.

Fantastic contributions from everybody else. You guys really rocked it! :)

Let me start
with the music and compliment everyone who made this song such a great one ! From the artwork till the backing vocals, bravo everyone !

I'd like to comment further on the ideas here. This is not only very clever, but also a wonderful initiative. This has such a great pedagogic value, I think David Jorden and yourself deserve a great compliment for this. I also find your way to proceed writing the song very well thought. I'm particularly impressed how you did to create these lyrics.

Here I'd like to take a moment to compliment, not only David and Andrew the musicians, but also, David and Andrew the pedagogs. I wish my children's path crossed people like you.

great vocal david...effortless delivery and easy style. hey ryan dude...you're a chip off the old block. great harmonies, really great harmonies, great arrangement and mix, love the harmonica terry and the drums mike. andrew this is AMAZING. who wrote the lyrics? oh wait i just read...david again. wow...this is a fantastic get together of all kinds of talent but you manage to weave it all together with no mess and everything coherently in its own space. did i say you should be doing this professionally? i could take over at school for you.

David came in with numerous lines already written. We had to rearrange some to match the 12 bar format. The social worker and her students just about wrote the last verse (at least the content and order of the lines). We played with the wording to get it to work in the song form.

When you work with guys as talented as Ryan, Mike, Terry, and John there's never a mess to deal with. Everybody contributes such high quality tracks this almost mixed itself.

I've never had much success making $ in music. I think I'll stick to doing it for the art and fun. Thanks for stopping by for a listen.

Thanks for the invite to be a part of this. Great mix Andrew,, I really like the acoustic & panned electric guitars. David's harmony at the bridge adds a nice touch. Ryan's bass playing is very solid with a professional sound. It's such a warm feeling to hear the kids sing with me. Kudos to all involved... swell job. great line up of musicians here that have created a great blues track. Interesting to read how the song developed and it can be quite inspiring once you get a blues shuffle going on the guitar.
This is a great recording Andrew and a nice mix of all the instruments, I can hear everything so clearly and there is a lot going on in this song.
Love the harp and good to hear your son Ryan playing the bass, great intro with your guitar and the vocals are superb.

Man, this is the real deal! Full blown blues! First off the song has a great message, this is such an important current issue. Now the mix! The mix is really lively and full, great dynamics all around. That slide guitar (Andrew's secret weapon) sounds SO good, you really play that well Andrew. The harmonica is outstanding, really sits well in the mix too. Ryan and Mike really sound great together, love that walking bass line, his note choices and time are impeccable. David does a great job on the lead and whoever is doing harmony is dead on. Grand idea, great music, superb collab!

Amazing Solidity...
Well, congratulations to all involved in the creation and production of this number. The lyrics are, of course, right on the money vis a vis the topic...and a timely and important one, too. Production—vocals, harmony vocals, that great harmonica, the perfect bass—all of this works so well together. ... Send it to Sesame Street or a children's TV workshop type program. It is PERFECT as a message song that is cast in such a positive and instructive light.

The 5th grade background vocals are a great touch. This is dynamic, well thought out, touching...thanks for the download guys.

Critical message delivered with panache
Hey all, what a blast! The ability to deliver such a critical message in an enjoyable and professional-sounding musical package that kids can relate to is something not many could pull off without it sounding contrived. As a recently retired school principal I really understand how important this message is. Congratulations to all concerned. Warm regards, Peter.

I love this man. It has a genuine juke joint sound. The harp and piano seal the deal for me.

It's great that you are doing this with these kids. I know they love being a part of it and who knows where this new found love of musical experiences will take them.

They'll never forget it and neither will I because I'l got a downloaded version on my iPod!

I've thought about dipping my toe in the video side of things but don't know the first thing. A cool way to go with these two songs featuring the kids would be an animated piece using the cartoon kids from Bob's illustrations as the main characters. But again, I don't have a clue.

When they hand out the pay raises make sure David gets one as well. This does not happen without him.

Don't bully me
Wow. Well thanks for the nudge to go listen to this Andrew. What a standout track! The guitar in the right speaker especially really caught my ear and I'd have liked to hear more. This really has a Texas blues vibe to it helped no end by that piano which is great. The vocal delivery was on the money and the kids backing vocals were a lot tighter than I expected. You know what it's like trying to get a lot of people doing the same thin at the same time! - but they were spot on. I'd have liked a Guitar solo in there kinda SRV style but that's just splitting hairs. The harp work by Terry was cool - we don't get enough of that here! And of course the message for the kids is beyond question, songood work - sometimes that kind of advice can come across a little corny but in the context of this, I think it floats well. Really enjoyed this as a tune in it's own right as well as much respect for the message. And to think I nearly missed this! My bad. Oh, and that chuckle at 2:22 is just fantastic. Thanks for the heads up Andrew and well done all concerned!

I opted to forgo a guitar solo because I never feel like I'm saying much when I play the blues. Other guys know how to say a lot through their instruments in a blues context. I just feel like I'm wandering around the fretboard. And I never was able to do the SRV thing. So seeing how we had Terry along with us it just made sense to give him the solo.

Thanks so much for stopping by. And thank you for all the thoughtful and supportive comments. We all appreciate it!

Sounds great!
I listened to this earlier in fairly lo-fi circumstances and didn't want to comment because I heard some problems that I didn't know how to express without causing offense. Fortunately, it seems, on a second (and third) listen through my 'phones, that I wasn't in fact hearing properly.

This is a great collab - the only nit I can find is that the kids' voices are a little too far in the background. Andy, as we've discussed, I think this sort of thing that you and David are doing is really good - honourable even!

It's kind of an adult style that you're doing here - I reckon if you could tailor it more for the kids, you might just be on a Wiggley (for slightly older kids) winner - you have heard of The Wiggles haven't you?

Good stuff - your school district is hopefully eyeing you and David off and about to throw large amounts of $$$$ at you to make this concept bigger.

Cheers from Oz (and, dare I say it, "in education"),
Neil.

Thanks Neil
Mixing and mastering for multiple listening devices and environments is still a tall mountain for me to climb.

As for "tailoring it more for the kids," I think I would be inclined to agree with you if there was a motivation beyond showing the students that music composition, production, and publishing to the Internet is possible. I also find kids can be more sophisticated than we realize. I teach my 1st grade students several songs by The Beatles. The kids absolutely love them and love to listen to the CDs while they do other work. When David and I write and arrange these songs we just take them in a direction that feels natural. I think tailoring the lyrics to the intended audience is enough for our current goals. But like I said, if we had aspirations to take this to another level, you're probably right and considering the audience a bit more carefully would be necessary.

Thanks so much for the thorough listen and thoughtful feedback.

Potentially good advice if the trusted adult is a lawyer. Sue the bully's parents for defamation of character, libel, or intentional infliction of emotional distress :>

Cool song, Andrew. It's all good, but I especially like the piano playing. Having the kids sing on this is a great idea. This project must have taken you a long time to complete. If you're like me, the lyric writing goes the quickest, and then everything else is just a long process of tweaking. You have tweaked well! OK, now I am getting very impressed with the harmonica. Terry (TERRAPLANE) is playing harmonica. Since he played it through a Green Bullet mic into a tube amp in the same way blues legends like Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter did, I credited Terry with having played blues harp, rather than simply calling his contribution "harmonica." Either way would have been correct.

Bully Blues
Interesting subject for a blues song, shows that they don't all have to be about poverty, hard times, and broken relationships. A college situation (am i right in assuming that?) can cause pain, too, worthy of being expressed in this form. Bullying has got to be as painful to suffer as most bad things.

The music itself is very good and really together, right from the off with two perfectly matched guitar channels. Really enjoyed listening to it.

Thanks for the song.

Faux-macho comeuppance!
Sorry I missed this earlier, but here goes: Sometimes it's a refreshing intermezzo to grab hold of an upbeat tune and shed the furrowed brow, the angst, the darkness. Sounds like a buncha guys hangin' out and jamming live. (Groove- and lyric-wise, it reminds me of the Dead's "Don't Ease Me In," another happy tune with a good-natured faux-macho posture.) sorry i'm late!
wonderful intro, andrew. amazing what mood can be set with just a few well chosen notes. oh that piano rocks my soul! more oh at that amazing harp - wow. Mr. Jordan does a bang up job on the vocal, and the bgvs truly DO enrich the whole enchilada. Snappy percussion and the bass keeps me hooked. NICE JOB, ALL! anne
