Description
Lead guitar, Bass - Stephen
Rhythm guitar - His dad
The original version of this is a Bing Crosby song from the 1930s I'm reliably informed by the incomparable MichaelJayKlein and is now public domain.

At this point, I gotta introduce the guest rhythm guitarist,Victor, my dad. He's forgotten more about the guitar than I'll probably ever learn and these days plays guest guitar (after considerable encouragement and pleading) with the local Jazz bands in Northern Ireland. He taught me to a certain point and inspired me a lot further, it's fair to say. As I'm sure you'll agree, the great thing about his playing is that it's unrushed, concise and not overplayed. I have to take a deep breath and sit down in a darkened room for eight hours to get that sort of composure.

This was done for quickly and for fun. The sound quality is due to use of my old Griffin iMic as an interface, although I think it adds a nice old school crackle. Hope you enjoy - and a big nod of thanks to MJK!

you bastard....you managed to get your dad on one of your tracks. i've been trying to get mine to sing on one of my tracks for over a year...and he's just not interested in getting round to it. fortunately 4 years on the couch has helped. well done dad and son.

Thank you Julian. I'd been telling him about Garageband for a while and it just piqued his interest, so I got him to record a couple of songs he taught me that we often play when we get together to a drum track and I added my lead a while later. Thanks for having a listen and dropping a note for me.

Thank you so much Karen. It was just a little bit of fun, not carefully recorded or pored over. But it's nice for us both to listen to and think of the times we do get to play together. Glad you enjoyed it. I really appreciate the kind comments.

It's always nice to hear family sharing the joy of making music. I love that twangy melody tone. Dad is rock solid on Rhythm!

Thanks Andrew. We don't have many tunes that the both of us know, so jams are few and far between, not helped by the fact that he lives in Ireland and I'm over in England so we don't see each other much to play. He is indeed rock solid rhythm for my meoldy to play over; there's probably a metaphor there somewhere!

Thanks very much Yeman. The song is pretty short, as it was more me showing him Garageband briefly and I liked it so much I thought I'd post it here. Maybe some day I'll get him to do something a bit longer. I do have another track we did called "Rosetta" but for some reason it sounds a bit out of tune at the start before dropping into tune as it goes on, so not sure if I'll post that. Thanks for your kind comments; I appreciate you taking the time to have a listen.

Wow, this is just so special. It must have been so awesome to jam with your Dad. You both sound super duper amazing, wish the tune was a bit longer!

Cheers Dani. This was more of a virtual jam as my part was recorded later, but it is fun to jam with the old geezer when I see him. Admittedly we do end up just playing instrumentals of jazz songs he knows like this as it's nice to do something he enjoys rather than crowbar him into some more modern stuff. He's got a PC, so I have a plan to try and get him some PC garageband equivalent if one exists and we can start swapping tracks! Will see how we get on! Thanks for the kind compliments =)

Thanks very much Peter. The old school sound is more recording carelessness than any deliberate attempt, but thankfully it's in keeping! Glad you liked it - thanks for taking the time to listen.

Family Envy
What a great way to connect with your old man!

You sound like you've been playing together for ages and could go on doing so for a long time after.

My father was a boy chorister and part-time (untaught and unpractised) jazz drummer with more talent in his little finger than the rest of the family put together, definitely including me. Shame my interest in putting songs together came a few years too late.

Cheers. Enjoyed it.

Thanks Marc.

My dad started teaching me when I was about eleven and I guess we've played a fair few tunes together since then. He's quite the guitarist, although on this he just plays some appropriately structural rhythm, although is capable of a lot more, not to mention bass and a pretty decent stride piano style. He also plays a mean paper and comb! =)

Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for the kind comments!

Oh, man, your Dad is sublime. beautiful four-to-the-bar work, tasty as all craziness. Wonderful take on an old classic.. You two sound great together!! Play with your Dad as much as you can, it's a joy that will live longer than both of you. I have my father in law who is great, but nobody in my immediate bloodline plays anything at all..
