Description
You know, I really am quite a contented and happy guy with a very long term partner, Judy, who I love, two great kids and a labrador dog, but writing in a minor key seems to bring out the downer in me. Another song that grew out of mumbles accompanying some acoustic guitar phrasings. I promise to post a more upbeat song soon! Hope you enjoy. All feedback welcome. Warm regards, Peter.

Lyrics
Vortex – Peter Bowen (2011)

I’m sitting here watching the rain fall
Thinking bout what I’ve lost
My life’s too much like a wind squall
I’m always counting the cost

Memories scud into view now
Your face is hard to define
We seemed in synch with the weather
Some days cloudy, next fine

Chorus
We needed sunshine in winter
A warm breeze at our backs
But driving rain lashed our shelter
We were stopped dead in our tracks
And there was no turning back

Our lives were punctured by lightning
Thunder came with a crash
Caught in a vortex of guilt, we
Didn’t survive the flash

Forward forecasts were frightening
Our sky was leaden with fear
It seems our lack of commitment
Tainted the atmosphere

Repeat Chorus

I like how you mumble!
This, like several of your past presentations, has this simple and clear yet quietly intense feel to them; I like how you do that. Your phrasing is easy yet very effective at the right places on this--a fine song, well performed and the outstanding mix and track work compliments this very well. You do quality work and thanks for bringing this to us Peter. Take care now! Michael

"feedback"? Doesn't seem appropriate
for an ACOUSTIC tune. OK, all kidding aside...

I don't know why, but I love composing in minor keys; and I love this. What a sweet and mournful sound you're getting here Peter!

Lovely lyrics as well. This is really good my friend. You done yourself proud.

Be well!

hi peter - this is terrific! i love composing in minor keys - they can be really compelling, and this is a good example of what i mean. very thoughtful, cool "mumbles". i'd call your guitar work in here a lot more than "some acoustic phrasings"! great work - thanks for posting this gem!

Magnanimous
Hi Karen. As usual you are magnanimous with your comments and support (no pun intended :-)). My partner was a bit concerned (again) when I played her the song but accepted that the lyrics were suited to the minor key melody and came around in the end. Song writing throws up some interesting challenges. Take care. Warm regards, Peter.

There was a moment
my wife reproached me for writing sad sounding songs all the time. I realized that everything I could come up with was in minor keys, I just couldn't help it, although I can't really complain either. As long as it sounds good, what the heck ... And yours sounds awesome, great listen !

Song writing conundrums...
Hi Yves. Yes, it is an interesting situation to be in. I am still not sure my partner really understands that most songwriting is fiction (as it is in this case). It is like writing an essay -you go with what works. Thanks for listening to my song, and your positive reaction. Your recent work with Charles is fantastic. Warm regards, Peter.

Picking Envy
i really love the guitar work here. Envious as hell. Sounds a little reminiscent of Wishbone Ash, with the clean, brilliant combinations. The way the guitars intermingle so closely together is really good, i think. Mostly i pan mine away from each other to sound OK, to get it so natural and tight is really impressive. i'll have to listen a few more times and see if i can rip it off and impress people!

Lovely song, to boot.

Guitar tones
Hi Marc, I have found that my new equipment (AKG mike, Presonus Audiobox) has really made a difference to the recorded sound I can get out of my acoustics. The Maton has a Fishman Acoustic Matrix pickup and I record both it and the AKG (set about 2 feet away) at the same time and just pan then slightly to give the acoustic a spacious feel. I searched around a bit for the Ibanez tone I wanted and found that a slightly tweaked GB preset (Cool Jazz Combo) seemed to blend nicely. Thanks for dropping by for a listen. I really liked your vocals on The Grail. Regards, Peter.

I really like this Pete!
Your guitar playing reminds me of Wishbone Ash, and your style has a James Taylor feel to it. These are some heavy hitters in my book! You are getting better with your harmonies man! I am soooo glad to see you pushing yourself on that, because you have a real talent. You are ALMOST there. Not quite yet. What I am hearing is a common problem for harmony singers, and that would be the follow through. It seems like you get 90% of the harmony scale right, and then at or near the very end of what you sing it goes off just a tad. So you gotta practice the endings of your harmony. How you finish your scale. If you keep pushing yourself you'll have this. It's already dynamite.

As for the "downer" thing, don't sweat that. Music is medicine. If you allow yourself to write downers when you feel like it, it'll help your own mood to not be down. The music will help you to avoid so much of that. Just allow yourself to write what you feel like writing. We always do, but try not to second guess yourself on this mood thing. If that's what you are feeling, then allow it to flow. That's part of letting the music sooth your soul. I like this piece a lot, and you have real talent here. Just a little polishing on the harmonies and you'll have it. I think I can make suggestions if you want to hear them.

Me likes very much!

BTW: Best of luck with your upcoming knee surgery!

really pro-sounding intro....and here come your vocals. wow what a great track. lovely folk vibe...great guitar work...love that subtle tambourine coming in from time to time. love the vocal harmonies panned out to the side. the 'we' at the end of 'caught in a vortex of guilt' line sounded a bit isolated, but i'm nit-picking - this is a really cool creation.

Do 't worry about...
...a minor key or downer lyrics. Some of the world's best must is in a minor mode..The painful lyrics of this song call out for your sad guitar. I very much like how simple your arrangement is. Just straight-forward and without need for anything except your voice and the solo guitarq ( which you play beautifully, by the way)

A few early girlfriends...
Hi Paul. Thanks for the kind words. The lyrics are full of pain but luckily I haven't had to deal with such emotional turmoil for many years. A few early girlfriends perhaps... The whole song developed from an acoustic guitar phrase and a mumbled first sentence that I thought matched the mood of the Minor key. I am glad you liked the simple arrangement. Take care, Peter.

It's all a matter of balance
Hi Jason. Yes, I agree. All I have to do is balance them out occasionally so that my partner, Judy, doesn't think I have a deep subliminal unhappiness :-) Thanks for dropping by. Regards, Peter.

I always play minor keys. major keys are just too happy.

Seriously, this is great! I'm sorry I'm so late to the party. Love the guitar work!

Excellent song and much enjoyed.

MJ brings that home...
Hi Michael. Our most recent musical postings are poles apart but the wonder that is music means that the spectrum is absolutely wide open for all styles. MJ brings that home like no other. Thanks for the kind words. Take care, Peter.

Hi Char, thanks for the kind words. I did sing a lot of Simon & Garfunkel in my earlier days so something must have rubbed off. Take care, Peter.

minor keys ,,,
Yes, there is something about them. I love working in minor keys myself. Good songwriting here, I enjoyed the lyrics and vocal. Guitar is sweet too, right in the pocket :)
