Description
Since everything that's old is new again at some point, I thought I'd dust off a new old song.

This is a revival in the 2010s of a song from the 80s that celebrated the 60s. I wrote it, I think, in 1989 and played it in a couple of different bands I was in during college. A bit of a retro 60s style, but a message that pretty much works whatever decade it is.

Just a quick little pop peace, actually coming in under four minutes for a change.

Hope you enjoy.

Beautiful People

@1989 Joseph Gurner Music & lyrics
©2007 Joseph Gurner Lyrics
@2010 Joseph Gurner Additional Lyrics

See little Julie she wears flowers in her hair, like before
She misses her Johnny, he went away then died in the war
When she remembers you should she the smile on her face
You know she and Johnny they were going to save the human race

Where have all the beautiful people gone
Where are they now
Where are all the beautiful now
Where have they gone

See little Johnny just another child of his day
Victimized by all the lies then they sent him away
When he’s remembered only Julie sheds a tear
Because she and Johnny were going to save us from our fear

Where have all the beautiful people gone
Where are they now
Where are all the beautiful now
Where have they gone

time travelling
lets see.... 2010 subtract 80 divide by 60 plus 1989 puts us somewhere in the age of aquarius with flowers in our hair. did i get my math right?

groovy one Joseph!

Thanks Vic!
You know, I kind of wondered with the shifting of the Zodiac signs if the lyrics to Age of Aquarius might have to be rewritten.

Glad you stopped by to take a listen.

Hmm
Sounds like the Beatles and the Beach Boys had a mutated yet adorable love child.

That's a compliment by the way.

Make Love
Not war...

Oh man, my Mom would appreciate this tune so much. She was a hippie, yeah it's so weird to think of all the things she might have done, oh ick...

Awesome song, music is fab as are the vocals!

Like The Beatles said...
The love you make is equal to the love you break... or something like that.

It's always best, knowing the stuff we've all done in our youth (and beyond) not to think of what our parents may have done. And probaably for parents, knowing what they've done, best not to think about the stupid stuff their kids have done.

Thanks for dropping by. Vegetable rights and peace!

Channels the 60's really well. I like the bass line. Guitar tone sounds like Iron Butterfly.
Good vocals, clean production.

The bass line is definitely a fun one. That's how the song actually started and I worked the rest of it up from there.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Could be...
Now that you mention it, when this tune was written the band I was in was playing some Lou Reed so it definitely might have rubbed off.

The 4 R's...
Hi Joseph. Liked the retro sound and the nice bass lines. Your vocals suit the style of song well as well. The production quality is also good. Retro revival revisited rules! Take care, Peter.

Retro Rules!
Sometimes going for a retro sound can end up kind of cheesy. I think this one walks right on that edge, but it's meant to be kind of fun.

Glad you stopped by for a listen. I appreciate it!

Cool tune that I think would sound great played by a full band.

Thanks!
In college, both of the bands I was in that played this were trios, so it's always had a very stripped down sound with little or no backing vocals. So I was glad to be able to flesh the vocals out a bit on this version.

Thanks for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed it!

A fitting salute to 1-4 / 1-4-5!
I searched "Lou Reed" to see who else mentioned him so I didn't have to. So I won't. The bass in that midpoint break is a perfect salute to the riffs of the era, while the rest of the parts refer a little more loosely -- the same drums and lead could work in that late-70s punk/wave, with the added drumbeat accents and greasy guitar tone. Fun, bouncy but with a sardonic edge.

A Three Chord kind of guy
Bass is my main instrument (aside fro French horn, of course. It's hard to rock on the French horn though) so I really enjoy putting a song together starting from a good bass line. I've gotten away from that over the years, but this is a good reason why I should do it more often.

As for the drums, they're all Apple loops, but I used loops from several different sets to try and get a little different feel. Drums are still one of my weak spots so I'm happy when they come together

Thanks for dropping by. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Ah, memories...
My memories of the 60s are, well, basically non-existent since I was born in '67. But, my oldest brothers grew up in the 60s and I grew up hearing a lot of their music, so I kind of lay claim to it as my music too. It's fun sometimes trying to recapture the sound of an era.

Thanks for taking a listen. Glad you enjoyed it.

Chord Madness
Nothing quite says its time to get down like a 7th chord. I'm just amazed by the fact that I managed to write a song without an E-minor chord in it. This may be a first.

I appreciate the comment. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

So true
The first band I was in during my college days was a mostly 60s cover band. Lots of Beatles, Herndrix, CSN&Y, Byrds. Picking those songs apart to learn how to play them taught me a lot about writing songs.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by!

Kind of what my older siblings listened too... I think Julie was over taken by "Volvo Driving Soccer Moms". Great tune... enjoyed!

Hippies evolve into Yuppies...
...and created chaos. Personally, I like to think the Vovlvo Driving Soccer Moms created my nemesis - The Pretty Little Blond in a BMW (which I wrote a song about years ago.) Most of my siblings were too young in the 60s and those that weren't were your typical small town Mississippi rednecks (in a good way), so, no flower children around here. I had to make 'em up.

Glad you dug the tune. Thanks for listening!

This one was actually written at the same time as the first tune we did together, It's All Over Now. Different style, but same kind of pop sensibilities.

Thanks as always for listening, Coop!
