Description
I love soul music. Especially old Stax stuff. It's got such a huge world view and yet it's so personal...anyway it's good stuff. And of course there's the gospel element, which I also love, having grown up with that kind of thing. One of my favorite things about the pervasive christianity of the south is the way that it's used so regularly as means to secular ends, it's really just a language you know, and if you want to get into somebody's britches you've got to find some common language.

So a story: long time ago I REALLY wanted a MIA strat. Only i couldn't afford one. So I worked at 7-11 all school year and bought a MIM strat. Have you ever worked at a convenience store? Just saying, I WANTED that strat. So I got it, and i just didn't care about it. I mean it just did nothing for me. So anyway another, less ambitious member of the band I was in bought a Squire Bullet. I fell in love with it. I found it so much more playable than mine. So I sold my MIM, bought a bullet, threw some lace pickups in it and played it through an old tube amp and it was PERFECT. And then i went back to school and sold it to get a cavity filled or something. So this past Christmas my wife, tired of this story, bought me white on white squire bullet just like the old one. And in my stocking was a set of lace pickups. So this is the first tune with the new axe, tons of fun, the slap bass is the guitar btw as are some of the organ sounds.

Lyrics
i caught you a frog
for your sixth birthday
i'd thought it'd get me a kiss
but all it got me was a scolding
for catching a frog
you set it free in your backyard
the frog got a kiss
and i got to go home yeah

ah, i keep on arranging for us to be alone
but you're just too good for my own good

jesus told the pharisees
if you don't know love then you can't know me
i've seen you in church
i know you know what i mean

i took you on a date
the day i got my license
to a mid day matinee
we went to see flash gordon
you left it half way through
said your daddy wouldn't approve
why'd i try to hold your hand?
you just didn't understand

ah, i'm always arranging for us to be alone
but you're just too good for my own good

Yeah I like to keep the vocals in the middle of the mix but i also like everything to have a real shape, and the verse vocals here are a little flat. I have to work on the EQ there. Thanks for the listen man.

Man Craig I didn't know that you had this much soul in ya.

Killer production. How did you get the guitar to sound so bass-like?

I think that you are the new KC man.

i'm a country soul brother
i've always thought that soul was the epitome of rock and roll. when i was a kid i was addicted to soul train. my dad (also a redneck) was really into motown, so i guess that's where i get it.

i got a bullet...
... setting somewhere in a closet. only played once. seems to me it played quite nicely. i can tell the excellent definition with the lace sensors that you have going here.

the tune really captures what you where going after and turned out excellent. you are a soulistic funkmaster Craig

Great tune and recording!

I love a good "boy meets guitar, boy loses guitar, wife gets sick of hearing about lost guitar , wife buys husband the lost guitar" story! Hollywood's done it a thousand times but it just never seems to get old.

boy meets guitar
that 'make the wife crazy with the story so that she takes the desired action' routine is old as the hills but it works. same as the 'turn the wash pink and you won't ever have to do the wash again' trick.

i'm really into the idea of 'reimagining' pop culture standards. i've probably wonked on about this before but larry mcmurtry once said in an interview that he doesn't write westerns, he reimagines westerns, and i really dig that concept. so i was reimagining soul and glad you caught the modern flavor here and there. thanks for the listen boss.

Spot on 70's soul. That bass sound is from a guitar? The brass section is playing some very realistic sound fills. A lot of nice tones from that Bullet.

yeah man, the slap
just plucking the strings. love how you can do that with a strat type setup. midi horns that sound real are my thing. i have a trick but i'm not letting on. glad you like the guitar tones, nothing better than a cheap-o guitar that sounds good.

And this is screaming it man, very cool. The music is killer, kind of has a Jamiroquai feel to it.

Oh man selling your instrument for dentistry gotta suck, but yeah you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. So neat that your wife bought you a guitar, and it sounds freakin' awesome. Great stuff!

I also love
the old soul music... A couple years ago I bought one of those TV compilations and burned all my old fave soul tunes off of it. Soooo much fun to listen to!

Great job on the horn section. A vintage sound. The funky guitar rhythms are sweeet, and that's a mighty-fine vocal delivery Craig.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

something about soul

i'm lucky that way. i'm going to remix it with a mind on the vocals. I think the chorus vocals are fine, but you're right, the verse is buried a little, a little flat in the mix. i'll send it to you to see what you think. thanks for the listen dude.

It sounds fantastic. I'm hearing more disco than stax, very very cool.
fun music. the lower pitched vocal part at 2:17 was genius, I listened to it several times over.

no at 6 it was 'song of the south'
and i wasn't allowed to bring a girl, or i would have. in real life flash gordon was my 10th birtday party. but in my head it worked as a first date (you missed the flash forward in the tune, you were too focused on my al green impression). disco... well, solid gold took over for soul train after all. and if i remember right the first album i bought with my own money was the bee gees. don't tell.

Love the horns. Especially at the end of the line "..was a scolding". Drums also sound great. Are you using loops for them? The mix is also one of your clearest to date. Hell of a song, too. The message is classic Tempie/New Testament.

drum major
the drums are a lot of different, short loops that i hooked together with midi hits here and there. i usually prefer midi but i had some funk loops so...

i like the idea of a 'classic tempie message'. i think i would have made a pretty good crazy sidewalk preacher, like a flannery o'connor character...

I know what you mean about axe love. I had a Fender Mustang, metal flake blue with two baby blue racing stripes. One day of insanity I sold it for an SG which served me well, but I never should have sold that mustang. I still think about it. This is a punchy little soul rocker number. The guitars are great, Nice rhythm, snarling lead. The bass (which you did with the guitar- you said) sounds a little thin, but I guess that would be expected right? Great lyrics. Love it Fav'd and DL'd.

i want one of those too. this one still looks like frankenguitar, no pick guard and i don't have the tremelo dialed in the way i like, but it's been fun to work on, and i don't feel guilty about blowing a bunch of family money on an expensive guitar.

I'm working on a remix now, i'll post it privately for you and KTB to give me some feedback on if you don't mind. I like to get a tune where i'm happy with it and then quick post it before i start to hate it. I'm at the hate it stage now, but i'm liking the remix a lot better.

Craig, I forgot to hear this sooner -- eep! Nice change-up, good groove. But Memphis? Ain't you appos'da be up in Moonshine country Bondo-ing a rusty pickup? No, wait; you've slathered this with a fine, greasy groove and of course it's YOU all over. Your voice is trademark. But even more, I always know I'm going to like your tunes because your lyric writing is so vivid and real to me, I feel like I know the people in them.
