Straighten Out

Description
A bit of a first for me. Parts of this song formed a completely different tune I was working on, but ultimately became dissatisfied with. I felt there were strengths in it, but as a whole it wasn't working. I went back to the drawing board and used about 10 - 20% of it, re-recording lots more parts. The end result is this, a song with a very different feel to the one from which it borrows (first riff and bass line).
Overall i'm much happier with this tune, it feels more like one of mine and fits in my canon way better than the previous one (which thankfully didn't see the light of day here).

Lyrics
You know you gotta problem
That stuff won't make you cool
We can make, make you feel better
But you gotta turn your back on the fools

Ice white is no kind of colour
Charlie Snow's the lowest kid in town
No high's worth your inner spirit
Straighten out before you come around

Ch Ch Ch Ch Change
You gotta straighten out
Don't wanna be the one, the one who let you down

Your mom says you got an issue
Stole her purse to get your smack
What kind of dope burns bridges
With folks who always got their backs?

No one is gonna date a junkie
That shit is so old hat
Dandy Wharhols said it in the 90's
You better change if you want it all back

Ch Ch Ch Ch Change
You gotta straighten out
Don't wanna be the one, the one who let you down

Ch Ch Ch Ch Change
You gotta straighten out
Don't wanna be the one, the one who let you down

Ch Ch Ch Ch Change ...

Yes!
Very catchy hookage here Paddy.

Love the bombast of your drum track here. Kick ass. Drives your VITAL point home man. Vocals are terrific. Love those harmonies. And your guitar work is as satisfying as ever. (Something I always expect when I listen to your stuff...)

This one really gets it done!

Be well friend!

Expectations
Michael, it scares me that you, of all people, have expectations of my songs. I cant hope to compete! Thanks for your kind words. I'm particularly pleased with this as I managed to rescue something that was going very awry, and turn it into something people seem to dig. Stay peaceful man.

RE expectations...
FYI, you always have good tone, and you're a great rhythm guitar player. It's I who have trouble competing with you on both scores sir!

Take care friend!

Fantastic
I like your style a lot Paddy, what a great song.

Just out of curiosity, what tool do you use for drums ? I like the way they sound.

Drums
Thanks for the props. Usually I would use Toontrack EZDrummer but on this I've used Drumcore 3 LE. It's a very good drummer and I'm currently intending to purchase the full version. It's less intuitive than EZDrummer and a little more fiddly, but tends to sound just that tiny but better. That said, I would recconens EZDrummer as a first step up from using loops.

Tight package
Nice hook in the chorus and the drums are a highlight. Good song with a message all wrapped up in a tight package. Congrats. Regards, Peter.

Songwriting
Thank you Kevin(I know I know I still have to send you that demo ...). It's been says that I'm a better songwriter than I am performer/producer. Certainly here I stretched my vocal abilities to breaking point. I do enjoy a good drum track and, having partial hearing loss in one ear, I find good loud drums essential for timing (I struggle with just a click track - in fact I would use drums as a guide and then remove them for an acoustic track). Cheers. Expect an incoming from me any day soon.

yo, monkee
man the harmonies are really monkeeish. and I dig that. I like all the riffy stuff too. and the dandy warhols reference lol. and i love love love that little guitar melody in the chorus, that's vintage paddy, always makes me play along in my head as i listen.

Vintage Paddy
I can dig vintage Paddy. Man you were so right about the first incarnation if this riff. It was soooo wrong. I'm delighted that you lent me your not inconsiderable musical ear and helped me get it restarted. The harmonies - yeah I'm proud of that. The second the high voice went in I knew I had it nailed. The guitar in the chorus, yeah that's me and my classic one string melody! Monkiees comparisons I'll take every day of the week and yeah I knew you'd dig the Dandys reference.

Cool tune. The chugging bass is classic and propels the song along. Interesting guitar lines. Vocals/harmonies are strong. Good hook, and the song develops it well.

st-st-st-stutter man
The rhythm section kills in this tune. Especially the bass. Before I played guitar I wanted to play bass and this is a clear reason why. I want to play this song on stage. And that's a huge compliment. DL.
