Description
Vic: For the Producer's Challenge, Ben gave me the choice to choose a song from his existing posts to work with. I really liked Canadian Artist's from his original posting. My goal was to work with what he had and not add to much of my own tracks.

The original song only has only three tracks: vocal, guitar and harmonica.

I doubled the vocal tracks, making the second one work as a harmony vocal, with a bit of pitch shifting minus 3 steps. Plus adding other enhancement plugins for the vocals. EQ, compression, reverb, etc.

I copied the acoustic guitar track twice. Setting up two of the tracks with slight variations in EQ, compression and Space Designer for a room echo. The third acoustic guitar track i ran through a spectral gate plugin effect, producing the synth pad sound that you hear.

The harmonica track I once again ran through Space Designer to give it a expansive outdoor echo sound.

I did add a effected electric guitar track and a bass track, keeping those minimal as well.

At first I thought I would add some drums, but they just sound out of place. So I added a effected chinese gong just so there was some percussion here.

Me: When I found out who was producing my song, I decided to give him free reign: he went through the songs I had posted previously, and chose this one: http://www.macjams.com/song/64537. The original owes a great deal to the folk and blues traditions. I've listened to quite a few of Vic's songs, and, virtually without fail, he takes them in a direction that, to me at least, is unexpected. It was hardly a surprise then, when he sent me the track, and my mind got fucked. Given the constraints he had set for himself, he really made this track his own, and it's a far more interesting, difficult listen than it was in its original incarnation. Suffice it to say that I'm impressed.

I hope you all enjoy!

Your music is always cool and interesting and I'm glad this song got to get the producer polish. Vic did a fabulous job. You must be stoked with the results. Its a an atmospheric number. Now wheres my dusty cowboy hat...
No DL? Shame
tf10music said 2246 days ago (February 2nd, 2011)
I wasn't sure
whether to put in the dl option or not. I will porbably change it soon, though, especially if vic is down.

Glad you liked it -- thanks for stopping by!

Vic brought out the best in you using your best track. I remember commenting on how much I loved the lyrics in this. He really smoothed out the harmonica as well. The chinese cymbal adds a rattlesnake effect to a dusty plane classic. I can see the tumbleweeds!

I love
the atmospheric feel here and Ben your voice and harp sound fantastic. what really works for me is the menacing sound of the instruments working with the lyrics. This one works for me. Great original tune... super product. You guys play well together. Well done !

i'm pleased you dig it. I think vic plays well with anyone, I wouldn't give myself all that much credit.

Now that..
is awesome! I loved the original and Vic has improved on that no end. It has a kinda spaghetti western vibe at first and then the vocals come in and it shifts. Always challenging and fresh. Great stuff Vic and Ben!

That
is one professional sounding ballad. It has a forlorn or misbegotten sound to it. Wow! Thanks, Ben and Vic. Magic!

in the
appalachians, before blues and bluegrass and fully separated, they used to look for the 'high and lonesome sound' in their music. Vic really brought out as much of it as I could have mustered with this production. Thanks for the comment!

You know I like this...
The original struck something within me. I knew this song was very good and I would have chose it as well. Vic is a production God!! I absolutely LOVE what he did for this song. I feel this embodies the truest of the offerings within the "Producers Challenge" F$#%ed my mind too. AWESOME you guys!! Ben, I would love a copy of this song as it is. If you are going to offer it up on itunes or somewhere else let me know. I would pay to have it in my collection.
Peace

folk and blues
ha ha, I never even thought of that. i was thinking a bit Neil Young and that he added electronica on his latest album. so that was partially the idea from my side on this project.

The great thing Ben, is that you already had a well focused song from the start, which made this so easy.

Out-freakin-standing!!!
This was a mind blowing listen! The potential was there all along and Vic just brought it to fruition. This is by far the best song/duo from this challenge that I have listened to so far. Bravo Vic for an excellent production and kudos Ben for allowing Vic free reign! Out-freakin-standing!

Woah!
This production really lights up what is a lyrically brilliant song. It sets it off really well without destroying the original spark of creativity. What a good producer should do. Congrats Mr Holman and Ben both for a great job here.

Different
Almost space music, with the big reverb.

Did you use a diatonic pitch shifter for the harmony vocals? It's a bit buried in the mix, but I think I hear a hint of unharmonic tones. Cool effect, though.

Vic Holman said 2242 days ago (February 6th, 2011)
shifter
i actually used logics pitch shifter II minus 3 steps with a 60 % mix. i also used pitch correction, setting it A minor natural to lock in the harmony (although I'm not sure if that really made a big difference) i did keep that vocal track down a bit as not to interfere with bens lead vocal track.

This is fantastic!
Ben - great song to start with. Vic - brilliant ideas about how to take this tune into another dimension. This is one of my favourites for 2011. A really enjoyable listen.
Sorry I'm late - way too much to do in the real world at the moment.
Cheers from Oz,

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
