Description
(Song 2 of 10 - North of the Humber)

This spoken word piece was generated purely by Garageband and the mic on my Mac, so it’s a bit of a rarity from that point of view for me.

It recounts the event of the Viking Raid of 793 on the community on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumbria using almost entirely the words of the historical record of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for that year, with slight alterations, and a few lines at the end of my own. It was the very first instance of such a raid on the English coast and must have come as a terrible shock after years of relative peace. It proved to be but the harbinger of decades of terror.

Lyrics
In AD 793, dire portents, harbingers of evil came,
Sheets of light on the Northumbrian shore,
Whirlwinds, dragons, terrifying the people,
Then a famine, swept the harrowed land,
Till on the sixth day, before the Ides of January,
Heathen men, slaughtering Vikings,
Came to the Church of God on Holy Island,
Poured out the blood on the altar of the saints,
Drowned their prayers with pagan cries,
And plundered Blessed Cuthbert’s Shrine.

But the Book Of Lindisfarne they did not find,
Nor the bones and treasures hidden deep,
They went as swiftly as they came,
And faded back,
Into St Cuthbert’s Blue.

Awesome
I am a huge fan of spoken word. You did a fabulous job, I had no idea you had an accent. I would, if I may suggest, like to hear the vocals a tad louder. Terrific piece, the music is lovely!

Wow!
Thanks, Dani! Your appreciation is such a massive encouragement to my songwriting and you do it for me again here with your lovely comment.

Your suggestion about putting the voice a bit higher is very welcome and i'll probably be tinkering with all these songs again after i hear what people think.

Take care

Excellent!
The musical bed for this is perfection and you can tell a story as well as John Gielgud or Richard Burton ever could. You really have a beautiful speaking voice Marc (something which I don't!) and this was very special--thanks again for the exceptional work here. Like Dani, I'm very fond of the spoken word (especially when it's as well realized as it is here). You take care now, Michael

Hi Michael!
You have really given my morning a lift with your very favourable review! i went to bed not knowing how this experiment would go down and it is really so encouraging to read your comments.

Can't tell you how important your interest and positivity has been for me since joining this great site.

A massive thank you.

St Cuthbert
Great atmosphere Marc, not usually my thing this but you captured it well and I found myself becoming compelled. Would love to hear you do something similar about Stonehenge (though maybe not the Spinal Tap version!!) Nice work Neil
mrattue said 2361 days ago (February 6th, 2011)
Lol!
Can't get hold of good dwarves these days for the ST version!

i have got loads of quite atmospheric poetry written without backing music in mind. Perhaps i might consider doing a little more of this genre.

Glad it appealed, especially when its not in your normal zone!

Very well produced
My only critique would be the English horn (or is it clarinet?). I think you should set it back a bit with some reverb. That would put it on the same sound stage as the other instrumentation. The piece is very dramatic and conveys the horror of the event very well. The lyric is well performed.

Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you especially for the advice. The sound is Boldt's Oboe, which i've got to try and prevent myself from using all the time. Just love it.

Cheers now,

St Cuthbert's Blue
Humber 2 is a worthy companion to No 1. Nice atmospheric buildup and then you do a great narration job with the slightly distorted vocals. Held my interest readily. Congratulations, Marc, for taking a risk and posting something a bit different to the MJ norm. Take care, Peter

Like
the tone, and accent in the voiceover, has a very ominus feel to it. I've never heard anyone do something like this here before. Interesting.

Hi Karen!
Glad you like this one. Something of an experiment for me. The words of the old record are a gift really, that one only need arrange and bring out with a bit of dramatic music.

A thousand year old historical text and the brilliant effects of Garageband, a very poignant combination!

wrap me up in my oilskin and jumper!
what a surprise to find a reference to my place of birth, although that was actually south of the humber in cleethorpes. sounds like you could have a career producing this sort of thing for visitor centres or radio and television. your voice sounds quite rich considering the mic you were using.

it is special when your own country is the subject of the song, isn't it? Just loved the coast up there.

what does
a cat sound like?

of course... the assumption that I wished to sound like a cat is not correct.

my focus was on the poet who left a recording for posterity in 1931 shortly before he committed suicide. I hope my setting would have pleased him since I tried to make his poem as musical as I could.

hi Vaisvil
pardon my stupidity! Thought your song was about a cat, didn't realise that the poet rather than the poetry was the focus of your well put together piece. Makes much more sense now!

Not the first time i've gotten the wrong end of the stick, and unfortunately, i'm sure not the last!

My apologies

cheers now

Immersing and exciting
I listened to this twice. The second time I closed my eyes and got the mental image.

Loved the dual clarinets (I think Clarinets?) in the beginning too.

What an awesome idea for an album.

thank you!
spent a couple of weeks in this locality last year so i thought i would try to do something musically with the experience. Really glad that so far it is going down well!

You are right, i am using dual woodwind in the beginning. One is an oboe, and the other a flute.

Hi Marc
I'm an ex-seafarer with historical interest and I liked this. Do you know the story of the Pilgrimage of Grace (1536). If it inspires you it might produce some good stuff.

The Pilgrimage of Grace is actually the subject of one of the tens songs on the album. I've got it down at number seven at the moment, so i'll let you know when it appears!

Wow, Marc, I don't don't how I missed this one...The music starts out so tranquil, and then grows ominous, surely like the sight of the oncoming Vikings back in 793. As someone who appreciates history, I really enjoyed your description as well. Thanks for posting.

Effects and a story that draws me in. Well done.. The mic on a Mac is capable of getting the job done. I've collaborated with MJ Emily Rohm Golmore who used the mic on her MacBook to share her beautiful voice. If you like it can be sampled here.
