Description
http://www.macjams.com/song/39252 The Original

I heard this one about three months ago and thought it was one of the best tunes I had heard in a while around MJ. Then someone started the challenge. I immediately thought of this one along with one by Dark Planet- Tom.
Then things got busy.

Finally I had the chance to these songs.

This was not so easy for me as I thought. I slowed it down a bit and "deconstructed" it a little and put it back together.

I really hope the singing doesn't bite. I'm the worse judge of my own voice. Sometimes I have to be reminded that I'm not really a singer and just some hacky songwriter that can do a little of everything.

Thanks Jack and Terry for letting me do this one. It was an honor.

Lyrics
Losing in Miami

So I picked up the phone, but I put it back down
Cos I know there ain't nobody there
Somebody said that they saw you in Memphis
You were happy, and had cut your hair
I don't know what's gonna happen now
But I don't want to hurt anymore
It always seemed so simple, but it's not so simple
anymore

How did it get so that I don't know where you are
Was I just some kind of fool
I always imagined the two of us together
But I guess I broke every rule
Baby I just want to tell you I'm sorry
But maybe that's not enough
And maybe you don't want to hear it, but baby
Where are you tonight?

Oh no, Losing in Miami seems the only thing left to gain
Oh no, Losing in Miami, where nobody knows my name

Will I ever be part of the world that you're living in
Do you have a place for me?
If you can't come here, then I'll gladly go there
Just tell me where you want me to be
I'm running along on a beach going nowhere
Everything stops at the sea
There's too many miles between Memphis and Miami
For you heart to ever find me

Oh no, Losing in Miami seems the only thing left to gain
Oh no, Losing in Miami where nobody knows my name

Nicely done Dave!
Good choice for a cover bro. This song lends itself well to your particular style of singing and playing, and I like it a LOT. Production herein is exceptional! Sounds fabulous on the headphones... BRAVO!

Be well!

Fast
Glad you liked it. Again, I thought this would be easy for me to sing. But, so many words in such little spaces. Phrasing is underrated.

Thanks

no kidding....
you can thank me for the little tongue twister here. the first lines i came up with for the tune were enough for me to go to Oklahoma and tell (con) Terry into completing the lyrics and sing it as well.... you just keep moving. This is 10x cool to have the "Great Lamp" do a cover of one of our tunes. I like it! Thanks Dave.

Don't mention it
I think more of us should cover other MJer's. I think it's the best way to show support and interest.
Glad I didn't trip up too much over the words. lol

Hey David
Jack and Terry came up with a lot of great songs, I tried to cover "Abbey's gotta dance" but I sucked at it, this is an amazing production of a really cool song, they gotta be thrilled with this!

between memphis and miami
Great lyrics on this one, and I like how you kept the accompaniment uncluttered with the vox highlighted. Reminded me a bit of "Desire" - era Dylan.
I love jangly guitar so I appreciated the arpeggiated bits too.
Applause!!

Mellow
Love the rising intonation at the end of each line, really moves well with the guitar and powers the melody. Also gives the lyrics a sort of dangerous almost threatening quality to my ear, and introduces another layer of possible meaning.

A pleasant listen. Thank you.

I'm hearing a sax solo and seeing Bryan Ferry singing this. Very nice version Dave - you nailed the acoustic guitar sound for sure.

Great choice of cover and areally endearing version
don't short change your vocals - I think they're great. Vocals are about intention - emotion and truth, technique is not high on my list of criteria musically. Maybe because I'm a guy who can almost do anything. lol.
Well done Dave,

Lightness of touch
Hi David, Your front and centre vocals work fine on this. You give a nice lightness of touch to how you sing the lyrics that I like. The understated backer also fits in well. The only thing I am picking up is some strong sibilance (probably due to the echo effect) through my earbuds. Somebody Said they Saw you in MemphiS... I'll listen through my AKG's when I get home and see what difference I get. Anyway, after all that, well done! Regards, Peter.

Thanks for your feedback and comments. I'm not working with the best equipment in the world. I'm sure there are some tech flaws going on here.
I wish I had endless time to work on these, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has that wish.

Thanks,

Losing is a Winner
Really love this slower version, Dave. The guitars sound great, and I like the style you've done this in. Yep, it's a hard song to sing, but you handled the challenge very well. I like your voice on this, and the lyrics were very clear. Jack and I feel pretty honored that you covered our song. You did a great job. Thanks. Terry

Your singing is certainly interesting. Luckily for you that's in a good way and it always works.
Good cover that honours the original.

beat me to the Desire comparison. This sounds like it also could have been a song you worked on originally. It's a very natural song for you. I like the piano. It's kind of buried, but it wouldn't work any louder. Well done!
