Description
I posted an instrumental track back in December called "Looking for a Song" (http://www.macjams.com/song/65361)with the hope that someone would add some lyrics and vocals. It wasn't long before Roxylee (http://www.macjams.com/artist/Roxylee) came back with lyrics, a great vocal performance and a cello track that never crossed my mind but fits so well. The original track started at 100 bpm with minor chords and then half way through steps up to 125 bpm and sounds more upbeat with just major chords. Roxy's lyrics follow this - they start with a wintry melancholy but then burst out with great optimism as the tempo picks up and the minor feel is left behind. The quality of the vocal made some of the rough edges in the original track stand out so some of the guitars and the drums were re-recorded (and a suspect bongo track deleted). Thanks Roxy for your work on this (including the title and photograph) - you did a fantastic job!

Lyrics
Ice can be a barrier
Cold makes is easy to hide
Nothing’s happening, anyway
An excuse to stay inside

Living in a slumber
Too long weighted down
Possibilities dwindle
Like a ship a ship run aground

The new year is dawning
Put the worries far behind
Climb out of that imaginary hole
So many dreams to find

Put on some music and dance!
Like a child, laughing free
Don’t be afraid now, take a chance
Explore the possibility
Explore new possibility

Good Timing
Just beginning to wonder here if spring might just be round the corner. Ideal song to listen to just at the moment. Very clever how this collaboration came together. Feels absolutely together. Congratulations to you both.

Enjoyed it.

Hi Roxy
I thank you! Music with lyrical content has so much more to it (especially when the lyrics are song as well as you sing them) and your contibution has made a massive difference to this track.
I hope we can collaborate on other songs in the future.
Best wishes

Hi Feter,
Roxy will confirm that the mixing took quite a while with a good few different versions being sent back and forth. The good thing about collaboration is the feedback you get from someone else which really helped with the mix in this case - the sound benefited from having an extra pair of ears to pick out problems that would otherwise have been overlooked.
Thanks for commenting
Best wishes

Great song, Steve!
I can see how Roxy was inspired. And she did a wonderful job, to no one's surprise, I'm sure. Thanks for this very enjoyable post, both of you. Peace. Terry

Hi Terry
As soon as I heard that Roxy was going to put a lyric to it I had a good feeling it would all turn out just right (as you say, to one's surprise at all). Glad you liked it and thanks for taking time to comment

Hi Steve - yes, it's easy to hear how this would grab Roxy's attention, and it turned out beautifully with her vocals! great teamwork, and congrats!

Hi Karen,
Thank you for listening and commenting. I'm really pleased at how this one turned out (you kind of said it would work out when I first posted the original backing track in December).

Very nicely done!
This has a distinctly 70's folk-rock feel to me - really lovely harmonies in a Joni Mitchell style. I'd probably drop Roxy's great vocals back a bit and let the instruments (especially the drums) come through better in the mix.
Cool post.

Thanks for that Neil
Roxy's vocal is the star here and I guess that's why I mixed it like I did. Roxy did actullay tell me that she thought she sounded a little too loud and maybe I should have taken more notice! I generally keep drums quiet since my drum programming isn't great and I use then more as a timming aid during tracking but I'll definately take your comemnts on board and have a play with the levels and try and get a bit more creative with the drums.

Chances
It's always nice to "take a chance with Roxylee"... and that shows here... smooth rolling music and Roxylee's satin-smooth singing and harmonies, lyrics and photo make this glow... excellent collab you two!

Still chiseling ice off the windshield this morning here (in Southern California!) so Spring will be welcomed when it comes!

Take a chance
Thanks Drakonis. It was worth taking the chance in this case because I was really pleased with the outcome after Roxy did her stuff. I thought you all dressed in shorts all year round in Southern Calirornia - hope it warms up for you soon.
All the best

lovely imagery
I can just see the cold and ice:) I love the instrumentals and the harmonies are beautiful. It may be nice to put the vocals a bit more 'in the mix'. You could try it and see. Well done.

Mixing is certainly a subjective game! I thought the vocal level was OK but Roxy and Jiguma suggested it might be a bit loud. I'll wait for a few more comments and see if a consensus view comes forward. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.
best wishes

Gentle and Laid Back
Perfect matching of vocals with the backing track. Your solo work is so very smooth in part 1, and Roxy picks up on the vibe so naturally. The up-tempo part is a good contrast to the opening but seems a bit short to my greedy ears that want to hear more.

Nice work folks!

Yes, I agree - the way Roxy fitted her song in this track compliments the underlying feel perfectly. If Roxy can come up with another up tempo verse I'd gladly extend the backing track to accommodate it. Thanks for listening

Hi Tiler
Your recorded guitar sound is great so your comments are a real compliment and most welcome! I did quite a bit of experimenting with EQ etc so that Roxy's voice sounded clear above the background noise of the instruments.
Thanks for listening

Love the country rock vibe on this. That acoustic sounds great, and the soft toned electric is a nice contrast. Roxylee's vocs sound great!
