Confluence (Piano Solo)

Description
Last March I posted Confluence.
As with every other orchestration I’ve done, it began its life first as a complete piano piece, and I recently decided to redo the piano as a first real test drive of my Christmas upgrade to Ivory 2. Although I already had the Ivory 1 software at the time I was working on the original “Confluence”, I was still using GB and at that time was trying the Miroslav Orchestral software for the first time. Those 2 things didn’t turn out to play well together, and I was having all kinds of crazy crashing catastrophes (CCC's) which made me afraid to try adding Ivory 1 to that file. So I settled for playing the original piano track using the JP Orchestra Steinway instrument. (Ironically, it was all that crashing trouble that finally made me take the jump to Logic, so I guess something good came out of it.) (maybe)

Many thanks to Mike (kevmikwa) and Paul (Paul F. Page) for the nudges to upgrade to Ivory 2 – I’m pretty thrilled with it and there are some very cool new capabilities and pianos to get to know better. For those interested in the details, this is the mighty German Concert D Grand II piano - full stick, activated half pedaling, and a bit of adjustment to the velocity map curve (to get the most out of my pounding). (Sorry mom).

I’ve had a great time working on this the past couple of weeks, and admit to having gleefully succumbed to OCTD (Obsessive Compulsive Tweak Disorder). Thanks to Shay (kassia) and Andrew (alackbass) for the feedback along the way of this little piano odyssey. Hope you enjoy this bare bones version!

Piano is a beautiful instrument, and I love the range and depth it has. This is a totally different experience, and One I nearly prefer to the original. It seems more somber.

Just awesome
Liquid notes playing across the soundscape, perfectly weigted and deftly produced. I hadn't heard the original but backtracked to compare and contrast. I think I prefer this as the barer sound as it seems more "real" if that makes sense. Quality stuff as always, Karen!

Beautiful tone...
Karen,
You have tweaked the Ivory beautifully. It is so rich and clear through all registers...Your playing is superb. The soft passages esp. (around 4:00) are particularly nuanced, but those really high notes just before the end kind of peter out. You might consider dropping them down the octave. Ivory can't do everything...but comes pretty darned close. ... I am glad you reposted this beautiful number. It was so pleasant to hear it this morning. Please, write more!!!

Hi Paul
now that's interesting what you're saying about the high notes at the end - in my ears they are just right. i guess this stuff is so subjective - or maybe my ears got warped in process. i'll listen to that again with your thoughts in mind - and thanks! (ya master you!)

Pound softly with a "full stick"
Whatever technical foo foo you typed up there is all well and good, I just want you to keep soaring across the Ivories like this... so good to see you eschew a "cure", but instead to embrace the beauty of OCTD (it would be lonely in here without you.) Anyway, the warmth and strength of this music, even pared back to a 2-hands piano piece, is testament to it being a great composition (though I would not attempt it on a penny-whistle.) Someday I hope to see you perform one of these pieces live, that would really take the (pound) cake!

Ecstatic
Really bright, positive, energetic piece, played with (to me) marvellous virtuosity and touch. The electronics just don't exist as far as i'm concerned, there might as well be a piano in the room its so clear.

As with all instrumental music, i am always trying to match images, narratives, ideas in order to make the notes emotionally relevant to me, but i know that there exists a realm of pure music if i can only find it! Somewhere up there!

Brilliant piece.

Take care.

I must be a cannibal...
for I LOVE your so-called bare-bones version. Really, when you post a piece with one-finger playing, you'll be able, legitimately, to call it bare-bones. So, your pared-down, but still rather elegant playing is sublime, and everything sounds live and delicious. Thanks for everything, Karen.

i am sure that APOD started to work on a version of this a few years ago and somehow got side tracked?

Hi Bryn
yes, i handed the original piano track (from the orchestration) over to APOD last spring sometime. Bud also did something with it shortly thereafter (Conflagration - i think it was called - LOL). and no, i don't hear the blips and bleeps on this one, but that makes sense to me because as i recall it centered on Bb, and since this is in Am/Cmajor there aren't many of those. the last 2 piano uploads were in flat keys i believe. glad to hear you've got a good recovery from OCTD - care to share your secret? (although i'm not ENTIRELY sure i want to give it up!)

Ivory 2
Your anxiously awaited debut with Ivory 2 did not disappoint: this is just what I was hoping for ... a solo piano work from you that has you twiddling all of the knobs and putting the software through its paces. In the end, it's a beautiful song that is very well-delivered. Excellent pace, delicious bird's eyes, touch.

I find myself hard pressed to hear the weakness Mr. Page was on about. If he's talking about the last high notes (5:05+), I must respectfully disagree ... which is tough as I respect him as another piano and Ivory junkie, like myself.

Regarding my appearance in the song description: I certainly didn't push you anywhere you weren't already plunging headfirst! Sounds like you really enjoy Ivory 2. I'm confident it will provide you with all of the knobs a tweak-head such as yourself should ever want. That is, until Ivory 3 releases.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mike!
well i didn't say "push", i said "nudge" :)!! and really, although i probably would've done it eventually, it really was that one conversation we had where you went through the details of what is new that GOT me - so thanks again. i'm glad you're liking the Ivory 2 sound, and thanks mike, for being such an all around great friend!

You play so beautifully, and this piece has a soothing, slightly melancholy vibe to it. I love the little arpeggio (is that correct terminology?)) at the 1:30 mark, and at 2:40 it is sheer brilliance! Your dynamics are very tasteful, and I very much enjoyed the listen. Thanks for posting!

I keep waiting....
...for the new amazing sample set for guitars that sounds amazingly full and reverberant and perfect....with samples of Martins and Gibsons and Taylors and Larrivees, recorded all over Europe... I think they're going to call it 'Wood'.....

Some really neat voicings on this, Karen, in which bunches of notes play nicely together... It rides a nice line between classical and pop...The flow is dynamic and natural.... The sound is terrific.... It has some of that Paul Page quality of sounding believably composed and believably improvised....

Is so good I have nothing to say :)
Excuse my ignorance but I got a bit lost inthe tech speak.
How do you make this awesome stuff? Is it you playing an "actual" piano or is it midi type software emulation? I noticed that super piano in your avatar and was just wondering if that's what I'm hearing or is that just where you come up with your mindboggling masterpieces? Either way it's fabulous I'm just genuinely intrigued about how you do it :)

magnatone said 2327 days ago (February 11th, 2011)
Hi Ed
lol - sorry to be confusing. this is me playing a Kawai MP8 keyboard (not the Yamaha grand you see in my avatar picture - that's where i practice it though). i'm running it through Ivory II software in Logic, so it is some very good piano sampling sounds that are making what i'm actually playing sound PRETTY close to how it would sound if i'd recorded it on my grand. that probably confused you more - thanks for listening!

Nice...
...I love the development at 2:35. The variations are great. I love pounding...it IS a member of the percussion family, after all.

Enjoyed. Always a pleasure, Karen.

how elegant of you
i love this. at the opening i envisioned a tiny rivulet of water serenely seeking its way down the mountain rocks and by the time you were done i had a rivulet of my own from eye to chin. beautiful change - one of many favorites to come - at :56 that whole passage is so full of wistful, tender, hamburger heart emotion - oooWEEE.
1:51 - mmmmm
2:35-3:38 - interesting change!
3:58 - 4:10 kleenex time
the build at the end was masterful against the return to the original quiet, seemingly delicate, but relentlessly powerful serenity of flowing water. thank you for the heart squish - it felt so good…..8)

Absolutely beautiful pounding Karen (hear that K's Mom?). Loved hearing the convoluted tale of upgrading and mixing softwares, plug-ins and the nail-biting that goes along with it. Add the complexities of collabing onto that someday - oh joy! This is a delicate moving piece. I don't know how you do it. I just know I fully enjoyed and DL'd.

Feeding of two rivers
This piece has the ebb and flow, the rests for contemplation, the drifts into sublimation; Apart from the technical adjustment, the playing has substantive emotion. Great job. Move over Wakeman, or should I say Strauss....

As with everything
you write Karen this was worth another listen - in fact many.

Loved the first version and love this scaled down intimate one as well.

I can hear the difference in your software and it's a definite upgrade.
Cheers,

I know OCTD all too well:
it's made me the creature I am today.
I prefer this version. The thing that strikes me right off is the unspecific emotionalism in the theme. That first 2 minutes would sit very well in a Terrence Malick film: it's wide open for interpretation. Contemplative (and a little bit unsettled), but does it convey an Annie Proulx-esque equanimity or something darker? I could easily spend a long afternoon in this state. Thank you.

Karen...
You are the Lady Gaga of classical music... lots of creativity and inventiveness and unrivaled popularity here at Macjams! No, you don't have to wear dress made of meat or pop out of an egg. It's your beautiful music that does all the talking. :-) This is just supremely beautiful. Wish I had an ounce of your phalangeal deftness.

Gorgeous
I love the light and shade you get both in the melody itself and in the attack. There's always some little extra thing (a trill here, a bass line there) to keep the interest. A beautiful tune that I could image just sitting and playing over and over (if I could play the piano, that is :-)

Piano solo on Confluence
This is really beautiful, heartfelt playing, Karen. Oh how I wish I could get even one-tenth of the way to where you are on keyboard! I love playing piano, but it is just so obvious that I don't really play.

I like the bare bones of this composition a lot as well: it is really interesting to see the bones.
