Description
It's been 4 months since I posted a song. Life does tend to get in the way doesn't it? A paean to Essex drug culture. The picture is the Essex coat of Arms

Words by Richard Marris, music by me and Richard.

Guitars: Richard
The rest: Me

Richard says: In autumn 2010 my friend and I were driving from South Woodford to Leytonstone late on a Friday night. We passed a row of BMWs parked by the side of the road and I asked him what was going on. He said, 'It's a nightclub. Wouldn't it be great, just once, to get dressed up, hire a flash car, and take the missus out there for a proper drugs and champagne night out.' He hasn't actually got a missus and is currently trying to get off with a 22 year old ( I hope he wasn't talking about my missus).

'I'm going to write a song about that,' I said. And, for once, I was as good as my word. Marriage guidance Essex style.

Charlie and Cristal ©2011 Marris/Langford

From this cold hard nightclub line
Back to that field in '89
Wide, black pupils locked on mine
Back when we used shine

Let's go right out tonight
Let's go do something wrong
I'll be Charlie you be Cristal
Let's see if we still belong

21 years of your junkie lies
strobe light sparking your dead eyes
Charlie and Cristal close to the flame

Put on a dazzling disguise
Make your skirt outline your thighs
Show you off like a prize
Burn your shape into their eyes

Let's go back out tonight
Dance to a different song
You be Charlie I'll be Cristal
together we belong

clever stuff dick...only just got the reference in the title...doh! i need to do more drugs (or some at least). great urgent rocking vibe on this. love the beatles vocal effect on the second chorus. richard's lyrics are excellent as always. cool track. love the transition at 3.00 and beyond....you could have kept this on a bit longer and added some other elements....loved the police siren.

Thanks Julian!
That was quick. I'm pleased you picked up on the references. I was tempted to extend it out and do more with it but that last section was supposed to be them coming down and I didn't want it to go on too long. Well listened if you picked up the siren! Did you get the morse code as well?

Cheers

Lot's of energy here, a great rocking song with excellent vocals. Great lyrics and I love the effects on the vocals.
Lots of interesting variety on the production and to the arrangement, great intro.

Another gem
Four months are not too long to wait for gems like this.

I love the density of your songs. There always seems to be more there than meets the ear at first listen; repeated visits reveal more sonic details, which makes for a delightful listening experience.

Let alone the intellectual buzz one gets from unraveling code within code.

I thought the disguise/thighs/prize/eyes verse was especially well-written, both in its rhyming sequence and with its vivid visual imagery.

Long time indeed!
Thanks Warren. It's good to have someone pick up the different threads to the song. I like the idea of codes within codes and there's a lot of them in this. The intro was about them thinking about going out but not being sure, then the drugs hit. Richard will be pleased about the comments on the lyrics and I think he did an fine job.

Thanks again.

Cheers

The intro had me totally fooled. The way it kicks in at :26 is great. Great song and arrangement. Love the U2 drum groove. I too like the megaphone vocal effect. Just outstanding production.

Very catchy and enjoyable track, I can imagine Elvis Costello performing this. Lot's of tasty little bits thrown in all over the place which all add, - and just about the right length as well. Can't think of anything that would improve this.

When Dick Rocks
Bob Listens!

I love it when you give us a rocker.

You did some really interesting vocal things on this tune - I love the chorus. I like the effected vocals and the eastern howling combo. The last verse is another unique treatment that really works. I think that effect with the morse code blips acts as a nod to your 1989 state of mind.

Thanks for the download Dick

Always good to get some feedback from you. The idea was to get over a whole night in the club. The drugs working, an eastern trancelike, hippy part then the inevitable coming down yet underneath it all is a cry for help and an uneasiness. Pretentious? Moi?

Cheers

Dick

Never too long to wait for tunes like this
Another top flight energetic rocker Dick. The intro form and instrumentation is inspired as a contrast to what follows, and the extro beat after 3:00 makes a fresh transition to the ending. What goes between is DWL magic.

Brilliant Dick!

Yes, a lot of energy
but in very small doses. Richard and I don't work very fast and we spread out our efforts.

I did think about stretching the ending but it was supposed to be the come-down period and I didn't think it could go on for too long.

Thanks for the comments.

COOL!
My first listen to your stuff friend, really wild! I hear a touch of Tull in the song structure and vox, this is a really well crafted tune. I Richard's guitar tracks are hard hitting and well played, I would like to hear them come up front just a tad more, but that's just my personal tastes, I like the punchy guitar tracks.
Overall i'd say you have a near CD ready tune here, really great!

Tull eh? An interesting comparison as it's not one I'd have thought of! Another bit of unconscious plagiarism maybe.

Amazing...
I never cease to be amazed at the cleverness of your lyrics or the inventiveness of your arrangements. You always have something to say and the treat of such well-written music is always such a pleasure. Shades of the Beatles? Well, you seem to take even that a notch or two higher. Though I do not write in this genre, I am always thrilled to hear the work of such a solid musician who's clearly at the top of his game. What a wonderfulmsong.
