2.16.11 manipulation

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This song was created by dissecting and reassembling a Zoom H2 stereo recording of our recent rehearsal at Ultrasound in NYC. Using bit crusher and Spectral gate and hold on the drums and Spectral dronemaker on over all tracks at times. I also layered in a synth bass loop. We have a few shows coming up and are exploring new ways to create our sound - whatever that is.

The Usual Suspects:

Steve DiB - drums
Bud - Guitar and many effects pedals
LSD 25 - Bass and even more pedals

well this is cool
it would be amazing to create this sound live. you might have to pack a few laptops to the gig and play through them. seems more and more guitar players are doing that these days

Thanks Vic
I alreday use a Boomerang looper and myriad other stuff - but you're right - it's tempting to bring on the laptop. What I'd really like is a fourth band member how samples and manipulates our stuff as we're playing. I saw the band The Notwist last year and they had someone in that role and it really added to their sound. He used kaos pads and other rigs which he controlled with Wii controllers at times if he was away from his station doubling up with the keyboard player.

Really gritty and dark. Love it. Thanks for the description of the process. Loved hearing about it. It is an amazing world we live in with what we can do manipulating sound. What a deep space you have created here. Lots to explore and get lost in. Thanks!

I have to admit - dronemaker is just too easy
It's my favorite plug-in and provides instant 2001 atmosphere. I decided to start recording while we were setting up the other night - so I was able to grab discreet sounds before we kicked in to playing ensemble.

I know how to do it live -
but getting it together with the three of us is a challenge. We've been working this area for a while now - so it will eventually come together. I want to avoid using a computer. At the moment I use an early loop station called a Boomerang - and LSD does something similar. The filtering is a challenge to get really tasty live.

I was referring to the bass player LSD 25 - not the drug
but you have a point there. If everyone was tripping we could play it straight and it might sound just like this. Many years ago I ate some mushrooms and was listening to The Butthole Surfers - absolutely convinced that Gibby was singing in a foreign language.

The bass was a bit of a cheat
but I needed to stitch this together somehow. Next time I'll get some clean riffs off of John to play with.
