Description
The Devil's Lies
This was written sometime in the late 90's one afternoon in my friend John's room. Usually when we wrote a song, he gave me a completed lyric sheet and I'd go away and find a tune that fitted but on this occasion it was written there and then, face to face, eyeball to eyeball with us trading lines off each other and agreeing the melody and chords once we had a format we were happy with. We always played it in our band as a rollicking blues number and I intended to record it as a Chicago blues style song, getting someone in on harmonica, some keyboards maybe, that sort of thing. Then the other day when I had a few minutes, I sat down to familiarise myself with it again, just picking a guitar. Slowing it all down and finger picking little counter melodies as I went, I really liked this alternative version which changed the song from an obvious blues to more of a lament. I think this is more apt to the lyrics. So that completely rewrote my plans for recording it this weekend with all guns blazing!

This isn't the tidily produced type of songs normally on the site. This isn't in time, nor probably in tune in places. But this is full of integrity and the song played for what it is. The picked guitar was recorded in the first take after an initial fumble. I then thought I'd add some bass to thicken it out, making the mix up in my head as I went along. After that, I then found out I'd subconsciously left space for a guitar solo as was the norm with the old version of the song so put one in, although not in one take on this occasion. The vocal was straight from the hip, no mannerisms really, no affectations, just singing the song. I have no idea what anyone will make of it - it's not "worked on" as such; it's not meant to be. I'm sure I'll do the full blues version of it one day but for now this is the "honest" version.

Funny thing is, a few years after we wrote this song, a very pretty young lady called Britney Spears appeared on the TV with her song "Baby one more time" which someone once pointed out to me has almost exactly the same chords! Rumours of our affair in the press are greatly exaggerated... =)

Lyrics
Sunny day and I'm lost out there, the world is grabbing me by my hair
I've got no money and I've got no friends, but I'm taking everything my world sends

So please don't you hear me calling, lying here in pain
I'm not asking for much, but please remember my name

I found myself at the crossroads, howling at the rain
My head was heavy, my body was weak and my soul cried out in pain

So please don't you hear me calling, lying here in pain
I'm not asking for much, but please remember my name

No more sunshine, no blue skies
The world goes black because the lord believed the devil's lies

I look out of my window, see the happy faces going past
I look at my reflection and I see the last stone cast

So please don't you hear me calling, lying here in pain
I'm not asking for much, but please remember my name

Really good work here Stephen
Like the clean guitar, your vocal suits this just fine, it has a sort of blue feel to it. I like it.

Thanks very much Karen. Glad you liked the song; it's been one of my favourite ones we've written so it was good to actually get round to recording it, albeit not the way I expected! Thanks for the kind comments.

Thanks Neil. I'd have been happy not having any singing on it but I thought we managed a few good lines in there so had to get on with it. Thanks mate.

Devil's Lies
Thanks Yves. Genuine music indeed. Very generous praise of my vocals, but thank you! I'd have said they were "adequate"! Funny thing - my writing partner John emailed me after hearing this to remind me we were struggling with the last line after "I see the happy faces going past" and apparently I suggested "I look at myself and I see my trousers half mast!" (An English prhase for when someone's trousers are too short - often older gentlemen). I'd forgotten that! Glad we came up with something better, if less amusing. Thansk for your support mate.

Thanks James. Ahh vocal compliments from the master! Very much appreciated mate, thank you. After I posted this, I started to wonder if I'd made a mistake and should have recorded a "proper" verison but after reading this I'm glad I didn't. Thanks for that vote of confidence.

Devil's Lies
Thanks very much Mark. I think I'd started to lose confidence in my own ability on the guitar for a while, just strumming covers badly and doing lots of treated stuff (not posted here...!) that sounded artificial so it was good to get back to basics and remind myself why I started playing guitar in the first place. Thank you very much for your kind words - very much appreciated.

the devil lies
hi stephen. i like the the blend of the guitars and the simple repeated riff (it's not only britney who's been in this territory). the lyrics could be more complex (you've got a lot of obvious repeated rhymes). i like the chorus/bridge/middle bit (no more sunshine etc...) i would have liked to have heard that more. the mix is great and the effect on the vocals is perfectly places for the song. if you did some minor enhancements then this would be a really excellent track....memorable like 'house of the rising sun' as opposed to 'hit me baby one more blah blah'.

Devil's Lies
Hey Julian. Thanks for the hard listen and well thought out response - very much appreciate the effort you've gone to! The lyrics.. well, the decent lyrics are probably John's and the obvious repeated rhymes'll be mine (see the reply to Symphony101 about the alternative final line!) Not my strong suit I must admit. Think Oasis-style I feel free, up in a tree, having a pee! I'm also keen on the bridge - fair comment that I should have made more of that. I'll be certain to repeat that again when I do a revisit for the tidy version. You might even like to join me on that! I actually quite like "baby one more time" for my sins..! Travis do a great version. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the thoughts and taking the time to give it an in depth listen and provide well thoguht out constructive criticism. I really much appreciate it.

Thanks very much Dani. You're too kind! Nice to see my art college education's not been a complete waste, eh? :) I can never think what to put as a picture, so whatever doodle manifests tends to make the grade. Britney and I are just good friends, so my agent tells me. MJK says this is a routine #74! glad you liked the song and thank you for the kind comments on my singing. As always, a vocal compliment from you means a lot. Speaking of which, I just came across "three weary miles" today. How on earth did I miss that? Awesome stuff! Thanks for taking the time to listen and leave such kind comments.

'Honesty'
is the word that covers your performance here and great for that. I always think the initial guitar vocal is the best fruit.... never sounds the same on separate tracks Stephen. This is a really good raw performance of a really good song..... loved it, regards M

Soulfull
That guitar part gives me chills down my spine bro. That doesn't happen that often.
It could be the combination of the rasp in your vox as well.

I recall one of your other tunes did that too.

Excellent phrasings too.
I love the tone of that Hofner bass.
Killer man!

Devil's Lies
Thanks very much Michael. Wow - I've never had a compliment on my guitar playing like that before. Definitely one for the scrapbook - thanks a lot. The raspy vocals were due to not having warmed up - that was about the second take I think and I left it at that. On other occasions (I'm thinking "Bullfrog Blues") the rasp was affected and maybe I should use it a bit more often!

I'm very privileged to have that bass - a wedding present from my wife and I've since found out it's the '62 special edition reissue, so not a cheap middle of the line edition either. I had to wait all honeymoon to get back and play it! Absolutely killed me. Funny thing is, my mate who co wrote it with me had a listen here and (rightly) said it was the worst he's ever heard me play bass! His exact words were "Lennon would have been proud of that bass playing", a reference to John Lennon's awful bass on "The long and winding road". Duly noted and I shall make more effort next time.

Thanks for the kind comments here Michael - made my day mate.

Devil Stuff
Peter Green or Rory Gallager are both touchtones for this style, don't know if your familiar, but great job on the guitar parts. I could feel you in the cracks sailing... a "stinging" vibrato, adds some dynamics...

Devil's Lies
Thanks Daug. I'm definitely an admirer of Peter Green and beyond being called a big fan of the late great Rory Gallagher (see my version of "Bullfrog Blues") so thanks for the nods there. I was kinda doubting my guitar playing for a while there so this was a good point to reassure myself that I'm reasonably capable. It's not pretty, but it's honest. Thanks very much for taking the time to listen and pay me such nice compliments. Made my evening. Thanks very much.

Very kind of you to say so. I would say Britney owes me some royalties on the chord progression, but I probably subconsciously nicked it from somewhere else. A clear conscience is the result of a poor memory! Thanks for the kind comments and taking the time out to listen to this. Much appreciated, good sir!

heart wrenching reality
musical emotion, stripped to the bone... there is an honesty of delivery here that grabs my attention and will not let go. I feel the anguish of ages echo in the music and lyric. The rough timing and strained singing simply add to the beauty of delivery. Well done. 0x0

Devil's lies
Thanks Eduard. I think if I "produced" this, it would lose something in the polishing. So I'm glad that this rough version exists before I do a "tidy" version which may never happen. Thanks for being kind enough to chalk the dodgy timing and singing as a positive, rather than just shoddyness on my part =)
