Description
This was one I recorded back in 1938 on the TinTone label (backed here by the Cliquot Club Eskimo Orchestra, led by Basil Fomeen), transferred from a newly-discovered acetate master apparently found by a Boy Scout in May 2007 around some old Indian ruins. The credited authors of this tune are Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields (1928), but legend has it Fats Waller sold the song to them for a case of scotch.

Thanks for shuffling in and have a great week!

Michael

Who are
the three MacStooges? I thought we had a lot more than three. ;)
Great song. Cool vinyl sound. You are a lot older than you look. Soon, Farina will have to bury you in the backyard, you old relic. Love it. Smooth. Thanks.

I'll never tell!
You'll have to call their agents regarding the 3 MacStooges (I've been paid off already Char). Oh, I was in my late 40s when I crooned this one (you believe that too, right?) Thanks again for stopping by and always a pleasure to hear from ya--take care now! Michael

Your vocal blows me away man you are seriously talented well done again
michaeljayklein said 2485 days ago (February 26th, 2011)
Too kind...
...thanks very much Neil! I guess I must confess that I love singing and I greatly enjoy spending the time mixing and recording these things (that's the fun part for me) so when my voice is a little out of sorts (I'm not surely lately if it's my allergies or all the many inhalants and pills my doctor has me on to cure me!) and I'm itching for something to do, I always rely on certain old sawhorses like this to fall back on. Thanks for listening and keep up the fine work! Michael

Woah baby
Such a happy snappy tune. Love that deep "baby"
I can't imagine the look on your pups face When you record these.
Another gem

Ted Baby!
Hahahahaha--you know, I based much of this (and borrow his shtick for any number of things) from the recordings of Fats Waller--my childhood idol, and that deep voice thing and the spoken parts--all are a salute to one of the greatest musical entertainers to appear on this little blue marble Ted. I should mention to you and my other British friends that "Fingerhut" is a catalog company here in the USA where you buy things on installments. As always, great appreciated my friend--and beware of weasel-faced people, at least for the next several months or so! Michael

Jarvo the Magnificent...
Curious that you mentioned "On the Sunny Side of the Street" because that was written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, who wrote this song (or WAS it FATS?!! We'll never know I'm afraid!) Thanks again for stopping by and if you DO locate that book, I would like nothing so much as to hear "Sunny Side" performed by you (please don't forget and I'll even send you £15 just for your troubles mate!) Take care now Chris--Michael

James!
Good grief, you know, I'm on some new medication for my allergies and I must say, it made me so out of it last night (I felt like I could lean back and fade through the wallpaper down here, yanno? Very weird side effect), that I almost forgotten I posted this--I'm serious! I kind of remember singing it, but it was like astral projection or something! Anyway, if you said it came out all right, I'm greatly relieved! Thanks so very much James--you're the boss! Take care now, Michael

Excellent

my only nit was the vinyl touch was a great idea but the repeating "stylus landing" (I think) got a bit irritating.. just use it at the start and perhaps just loop some of the crackle in the background. Very small nit in an otherwise fantastic performance and production.

Thanks ABP!
Yanno, I've done that scratchy vinyl effect before and there was somebody that didn't care for it. NOW, thanks to you, I know the reason--that stylus landing section being repeated over and over during the music! Very good feedback on that (I just never thought about it) and if I do that effect again, I will definitely edit out that particular section. Appreciated hearing from you and for the useful feedback you gave me on this thing! Take care now, Michael

Ye olde...
Hi Michael. Clever idea, very well executed. The authentic ye olde sound of needle scratching on acetate is a nice touch. I didn't know the Indians had record players but history is being revised daily by new discoveries so.... Liked this one. Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter!
Oh sure they did! Now, this might be interesting to you: I've collected 78 RPM records since I was about 12, and on many of the Okeh label discs, there is a little blurb: "For your listening enjoyment, be sure to use Okeh Cactus Needles". Yup, the really DID use cactus needles in those old Victrola players! Peter, you are much to generous to me--but thanks for being that way! You take care and I'll be along to comment on your latest post--I heard it at work but need to listen to it for real now that I'm home and have my nice headphones on. Michael

The Original
Michael you are so good at this that I could well believe your oh so droll description. Like the scratchy vinyl effect. Just finished watching Stormy Monday on Netflix so the Fats Waller remark brought me back there to that time. And what a time it was.

Oh yes, I have that movie around here and it's a shame that Fats only appeared in a few full length motion pictures (I think you meant "Stormy Weather" though!). That film features one of the most breathtaking musical sequences I've ever seen--go back and watch Lena Horne singing "Honeysuckle Rose" but you probably noted how brilliant that number was staged the first time around! The opening alone is simply stunning--in the truest sense of the word. I'm really happy you liked my latest effort here--and appreciate your leaving those kind words. You take care now! Michael

Happy Shuffle
Hi Michael! It is always such a pleasure to listen to your songs, and this one definitely doesn't let the side down at all.

The ambience is especially nostalgic because it was my father's music and he especially loved the jazzier, more cheerful numbers from that era, and the genes have passed it on!

Great stuff, very much enjoyed.

Take care

Fomeen
Basil Fomeen. What a euphonious appellation (a movie line quiz for you). Love it. And a real person, too. I would love to have a name like that. Missed your usual keywords, but you've more than made up for it with those two "baby"s between 1:30 and 1:40, as well as the ancillary commentary. The transitions from your singing voice to speaking voice are studies in timing. The humor is appealing, as always, since it conveys personality above and beyond what a "normal" delivery would require. Subconsciously, now that I've let it bubble to the surface, it conveys supreme confidence in your own ability, as if a "normal" delivery is child's play to you. Yes, I believe that.

michaeljayklein said 2484 days ago (February 27th, 2011)
Ah yes...
...that quote would belong to the man with some "definite pear-shaped ideas I'd like to discuss with thee." As for Basil, I'm sure I've mentioned this elsewhere around the place, but in my teens I worked on a big band radio show emanating from the Steel Pier in Atlantic City in my early teens and one night, we actually received a phone call from.....BASIL FOMEEN! Now this is funny--the host of the show, Dick, had a habit of forgetting what record was just played, so he go on air and say "And that was, er, Basil Fomeen playing 'Stardust'" (etc.) Anyway, this Basil Fomeen, the real one, calls from Florida and tells me on the phone "My friend there tells me you play my records all the time on your show!" Good heavens--he must have been at least 98 at the time, I don't remember. So, we interviewed Basil over the phone and in the meantime were playing very obscure Les Brown records over the air claiming they were done by Basil! I am NOT kidding Reggie! I have such wonderful memories and recollections of those days--enough for a book, I'm sure! And I was so young at the time--really, I was incredibly lucky to have been a part of all that back then. So, I've carried on the tradition with the Basil Fomeen thing. Reggie, I wish I could meet you one day--it would be well worth my while I think--and thanks for the great compliments there. Your remarks about being confident especially--my voice teacher told me that singing was about 50% concentration and 50% confidence in yourself, and I took to that advice most earnestly I hope. You take good care and hope your week is off to a sunny week! Michael
