chime and grater (2trx2011)

Description
During the enlightening and convoluted discussions in the forum of what constituted two tracks for this challenge - I said I was going to keep it simple. Wind chimes and cheese grater. So that's what I did. Thanks to the following folks at freesound.org I got a great recoding of a wind chime outdoors in the breeze - and the sound of a cheese grater being dropped on the floor. This was after I attempted to play my own cheese grater and failed miserably.

The two tracks were edited and twisted - slowed down - distorted and perverted. But all you are hearing is cheese grater and wind chime.

Now - thanks to:

FreqMan -
Metal cheese grater dropped. Recorded with ECM-99 to Extigy sound card. Needed some elements for a guy crashing into some junk. Accidentally had phonograph potted up on mixer - 60 cycle hum and hiss may be present. Used noise reduction to reduce some of this. http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=20804

Acclivity -
Wind chimes recorded in Jamesport, MO, Jan 2007. Filtered to reduce traffic noise.

and special thanks to Andrew for running this show.

Very Musical Ear!
Please don't use it to play the cheese grater. I got bloody knuckles from mine this morning. Excellent piece of work Bud!

This may be your best work yet. I have found that metrics have the best tonal quality... thats just for future reference And yes, cheese graters are very rough to work with... I enjoyed the work around.

Thanks - kind words from a guy who plays
a mean tortoise shell. Metric wrenches lend themselves more to Europen Serialism than the American standard 1.25". This is more in the Ives tradition. I'm sure Harold would agree.

ah.... serialism
Yes, I did pick up on the nuances, combinations and the systematic construction of this multi-directional yet natural body of work... huh?

This unusual (for me) and I find it fascinating. I can't imagine the work that was done but it was worth it.

Wow!
I never can keep my cheese grater in tune. They're very persnickity.

Very cool and about as far off the wall as you can get. Nicely done.

Cheese
I don't know what cheese being grated sounds like but I know what it sounds like to slip and grate my knuckles... If I sampled that it would need the explicit tag...
Very cool beat you somehow managed to work up. Felt like a storm was coming with the chimes picking up in the breeze and the distant thunder crack of the grater.
Cool
bud said 2427 days ago (February 28th, 2011)
It was fun tring to find some place
where both tracks could feel in relative time and timbre. I didn't want to get too techno about it so I tried to keep it random yet intentional. Thanks for the close listen.

Original, musical...
Hi Bud. And now for something completely different... I mentioned in my reply to your comment on my 2-track effort that there is something elemental about the acoustic guitar that has mass appeal. Wind chimes also fit into that category. Not sure where the grater fits in the scale of things though :-) A very original and, amazingly, quite musical piece. Take care, Peter.

Wind chimes are a breeze (pardon)
getting a cheese grater to be musical is another story. I really did try to play my grater in different ways - with sticks - brushes - woden objects - combs - but nothing. It didn't occur to me to just drop it on the floor though. Freq Man is the dude.

Very Zen...
I enjoyed this listen--very nice pairing of sounds! The soothing chime intervals are very Zen :)

Heh, heh....

But come on, Bud, get that cheese grater INTONATED....
bud said 2426 days ago (March 1st, 2011)
The grater was also generating those
hoof bells sounds - I thought it did pretty well without a just tune up. BTW - you don't want to wrestle with a cheese grater - it's not pretty.

chime and grater!
I must admit I am amused and impressed together, the fact that you have put this in the "Metal" genre is just awesome. The chime is really nice and the grater gives really cool percussion.... I am now off to see the head doctor!! Well done
