Description
Well here’s my little two track entry. Really it’s just a one track live (warts and all) recording of guitar/vocal to mic, just double tracked for a bit of separation.

As for the story, well back in the early 90’s being unemployed at the time in a fit of madness I applied to join the local Police and with incredibly bad judgement on their part they accepted me in into Nottinghamshire’s finest! After basic training it was out to the mean streets of Clifton and it was pretty tough out there. Thing was it was just as tough in the station. Wall to wall macho bravado and woe betide anyone who showed any sign of weakness at all.

After a week of night shifts I was home one afternoon alone and watched this film on video. When it got to the final scene I just suddenly burst into tears and cried like a little kid. I think it was all the pent up emotion of the previous 12 months. Anyway I felt much better afterwards and wrote this song.

Lyrics
Cinema Paradiso

It seems to take a lot to really move me
These days
I get hardened to all the bad news
In the world
Or at least I think I do

But just now and then
Something breaks through
And just now and then
My heart really moves
And just now and I don’t really know why
But I cry

I see an innocent love
Not corrupted by this modern world
A bond between
A man and a boy
A cherubic smile
For an old mans story
A timeless picture
A feeling of joy

Strip away the complications
Strip away the false relations
Don’t have to be grown up
Confront the embarrassment
A tear can be healthy
It shows that a feelings meant

It’s a sense of belonging
It’s a sense of believing
Could be the strongest feeling
I’ve ever know
So much of the time it stays buried inside
Clouded by fog and
Self deceptive lies.

But just now and then
My heart breaks on through
And just now and then
My heart really moves
And just now and I don’t really know why
But I cry

It’s only then
I realise it’s my fear
It’s trust understanding
That’s how it appears
Love is trusting
Trusting is love
So many years it stays boxed in and rusting
Too vulnerable to be worn
On the outside.

But just now and then
Something breaks through
And just now and then
My heart really moves
And just now and I don’t really know why
But I cry

Sensitive work
from a job that desensitizes you.

Simple and direct.

I like this :-)

Cheers

Personal
As much as I like the up close and personal feel of this song and its arrangementm I would love to hear this arranged for a slightly bigger band. I mean, I was kinda expecting the bass to kick in after the first chorus and the drums shortly thereafter - even though I knew this was part of the two track challenge.

...just some food for thought... :P

Anyway - very nicely done!

I like
people who cry... shows they've got heart ( I do a lot of it). Nice lyrics and a very nicely played a sung song.... lovely clarity. This would be nice with harmonies on the chorus's; that could have been your second track, but I like it as is anyway, regards M

Rebelling
Nice response to being in a stressful situation. The very fact that you were able to be creative at the time showed that you were rebelling against turning into one of the "cynical bastards". Well done. Regards, Peter.

Nice Mark
It's nice that we can take our emotions and turn them into a therapeutic out source for our souls as you did so well here. Nice job. Great vocals and lyrics.

The strumming pattern over those jazz chords is effective. Nice vocal & heartfelt lyrics. Nice job! I read somewhere that police in the U.K. don't carry guns. True?

I can relate. I just hope it doesn't get so bad for me with out a job that I become a cop. Then I'd be really f*ck'd.

Great track.

Great song, but...
The chords, the stripped down sound and the spontaneous performance work great.
But the lyrics and the length of the song left me thinking (because I struggle with the same kind of "problem").
I smiled alone and got my eyes wet reading your story. I was listening to the music in the background, not paying attention to the words. I think I read it twice in less than two minutes. At least it felt like that.
Then, when I listened back to the song, reading the words, I felt suddenly disconnected.
I think your story has touches of humor and deep sincere and simple truths. I was able to feel what you went through just by describing the situation, like the scenes in a movie.
If you can make an ultra condensed version of your story and fit it in a 2 and a half minutes song... that will kill me.

Sorry about that. Just thinking aloud.
