Description
The genesis of this song dates back to the late '90's. SonnyJim and I recorded the original version on a 4-track with SJ on vocals and me on a rhythm bass and a lead bass. I believe SJ wrote the lyrics, which I absolutely love. I've always liked the simplicity of it and have tried to recapture it on many occasions. This version features just me and is actually 4 years in the making, yes, I just realized it's been kicking around my hard drive for that long. I could never quite finish it. Some vocal always needed re-doing. Well, I finally am biting the bullet and letting it go. Be free little one. Time to move on to new things.

The recording has one acoustic, with 2 inputs, one miked, one DI. There are two main vocals, three tracks of mid backing harmonies, three tracks of high backing harmonies and two tracks of bass vocals. At the end there is a taste of strings to wrap it all up in a sugary bow. All recorded with a Rode NT2000 condenser mic. I'm not the best singer, as you all know. But I've given it my best shot.

Hope you like. It took me long enough...

Lyrics
Always Afternoon
© 2011 Racerat & SonnyJim

I’ve been counting the hours
That I’ve spent in her room.
The room between the towers
Where the light reflected blue

Always, Always Afternoon
Always, Always Afternoon

And I think of her face
When I get lonely
And that quiet little place
And how she holds me

Always, Always Afternoon
Always, Always Afternoon

She stands before the mirror
With sleep still in her eyes
And I draw her nearer
And whisper my goodbyes
We’ll think of yesterday
This room we left behind
The memories replaced
These moments hard to find

Always, Always Afternoon
Always, Always Afternoon

The vocals and melody at the start brought Sid era Pink Floyd to mind right away. Very cool post!

This was written
long before "SJ" was even born. If memory serves, the original was done in that weird, quasi-domestic walk-up you had in Brooklyn, the one with the upstairs neighbor who clomped around in her chunky shoes. Which is why we wrote a bunch of songs with quickie bass lines and simple vox. Ah....... those were the days!
For NYers who care, this song is about the first floor rear apartment at 212 E 48th St just east of 3rd Ave (the building with the 4 story public chess board on the side). That apartment exists in a form of perpetual twilight because of the office towers all around it: like the moon, it only ever receives reflected light....
I eventually married the girl who lived there; Phil eventually added the "She stands before the mirror..." stanza which wasn't in the original version.
Fine job!

reminds me...
of the 1950-1060's acoustic pop of the Everly Brothers and Mamas and Papas. Such songs carry you to some dreamland.

a ridd tune, a seamonk tune, and a racerat tune in one morning. it's like minute one at the cutout bin before the other kids get to it. love the lush background vox on this. also the deep lead. like peter murphy with a flower power itch. even he has to have the occasional happy sunday morning. great, great stuff. another one that i'm happy to throw on the ipod. thanks man.

Just got here from Ridd's latest, and this makes a perfect fit with that one. Heck of an idea and excellently executed.

Really good stuff.

what a lovely song. but what else could i have expected from you? :)
i love the "oh" backings panned hard left and right and the gentle guitar strumming. it's a shame the song stopped after 2:41 cause i could have listened to this a lot longer. but luckily there is a replay-button! :D
thanks for that amazing post!
and i'm glad you chose a mic of the NT series. i got the Rode NT1000 myself at my home studio and those are some crazy mics! always loved them and always will!
cheers!

Nice changes particularly in the chorus. Nice vocal, and the bg vocals are effective. Contemplative, heartfelt lyrics. I like the way the acoustic sounds.

Past Reflection
Nice tune. Simple, and effective, and gracefully harks back as others have noted, to a pretty distant period now!

Suits the subject of the song to be written in an older style.

Enjoyed it. Thanks

Hi RR. Glad you found time to finish this one and post it. The simple arrangement and fantastic backing harmonies give the song a real touch of class. The production is spot on as well. Another D/L! Thanks. Take care, Peter.

Love the vocals. The choir builds and keeps it interesting against a minimalist guitar track. Very nice.

I went to school for the fine arts, painting, and taught that for a while, but I am now a graphic design executive by day, and a musician most the rest of the time. I play guitar and bass mostly, do midi synth stuff, use drum machines ... [see more]
