I See Stars (w/APOD)

Description
this track is basically a soup of a lot of parts that APOD had recorded for the RPM challenge that were then recycled into this track. Bryn had originally come up with the idea for a dub track and I started to play around with it and finished another version that is mostly electronic elements.
the next night I had insomnia and put together a drum and bass track with a completely different feel. Bryns originals bits were further processed into more arhythmic bits, and I took Kevins additions and added them in. His bass track was reversed and distressed and his guitar track (which was originally a pretty straight reggae bit) was stretched and chopped.
the vocals are from the APOD track "For Ourselves" and the main vocal was made up of a few things that I found on Freesound.org and made fit into the song.

The title is something my daughter said. We had come home one day and it was daylight, but we could clearly see most of the constellations. weird huh? We were going to use the title on the APOD record, but it got changed at the last minute. I liked the sound of it and the fact that it fits in with the recycled theme.

BTW
I did the drums with EZDrummer and chopped up Bryns electronic drums that he did with Ultrabeat (I think). It's super fun to write drum parts now (I used to hate it).

I am going to have to look
into that ez drummer i think
beautiful, atmospheric stuff michael
great use of time and space
i think we should try to do a little collection of tunes at some point soon where 'the rules of the game' are that there has to be as much if not more silence in the song as there is notes...

cheers

i like it very much
i have another set of drums that is much nicer than EZ Drummer, and for some reason I keep coming back the EZD. the drums can be made pretty dead sounding which I like a lot. I saw a really cool set of drums for Kontakt that have tea towels draped over them. the company has them on sale for $10. But I haven't Kontakt.

Silence is a lot of fun to play with. Sometimes busy mixes just exhaust me.

seeing stars
man i love all the sounds between the lines in this - that static and what sounds like a slow shaker...and that alien language transmission that one of you caught on the car radio on a lonely road outside vegas. I kept switching ears with the headphones and i could hear different things each time. Very cool. I'm normally not much into this kind of thing but ridd's right, it's great walking to work music, and what's more the APOD stuff strikes me as really humanistic, a quality lacking in a lot of electronica.

thanks
i like to play with sound and I'm always thinking "soundtrack: more than electronic. APOD has a wide variety if influences so it never comes across too rigidly electronic (in my mind at least). glad you liked.

thanks a bunch. did you ever listen to the David Byrne/Eno album "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts"? a lot of found objects turned into some really compelling music. always an influence.

thanks very much. I like how the rhythm section turned out as well. it's the upright bass that comes with Logic, and the cocktail kit from EZDrummer. the kick drum is actually a pedal hitting the side of a tom.

for some reason I don't picture you playing hockey. that's actually kind of on the mark. I can see this as a soundtrack and our hero has just gotten hit in the head and is lying in the middle of the street looking at himself and his life as this is playing. thanks for the mental picture.

Comtemplative
Hi Michael. This piece seemed to force me to free my mind and contemplate some of life's bigger mysteries. Like how the heck can anyone think to "reverse and distress" a bass track :-) Take care, Peter.

I See Stars
You guys are doing some amazing stuff these days. I am totally diggin this. Just jazzy enough, just low-fi enough not to be saccharine. The drum brushes are what really make it, give that jazzy smoky lounge vibe. Thanks for describing the process. Always good to know!

What a great track Michael
I love that I can't recognize any thing I added. Excellent use of the technology and beautiful use of space. This is so sweet - really special sauce.
Also glad you got to use Sophie's title. Is that her picture too?

thanks Kevin
you can really hear your guitar part at the end of the tune (in between the last round of vocals). the bass is a little harder to point out (it sounds a little warbly and is kind of buried but still noticeable to me). i almost felt bad manipulating you guys parts so much, but they were the perfect parts. I think I will post the other version of this as well (it is much less heavy handed in the manipulation and you even get a bass solo).

SWEEEET!

First of all. Is it ok if I download this to try a little bossa guitar over it just for fun?. Second I really dig this band you guys have, everything I have heard sounds really good. Third. I recognize that kit, it's the Cocktail kit. I used that on my brazilian tune a couple months ago. I love EZdrummer. Thanks for posting.

Neat cyclical groove....
I just love that bass line against the dry drums... The bass tone is just right...

I've always wondered whether I should give EZ Drummer a try...I've been scared it would be another thing I'd get and never use... You certainly have a nice feel here that's not the same ol', same ol' in the drum department...

Hard to listen to this and not sway....

I See Stars
This song just feels good. You've created something beautiful! And I think it's in the slow but strong and rolling rhythms next to sad voices.

It's perfect as is, but I can also hear this with a melody and lyrics.
