Description
I've had a bunch of stories floating around in my head lately, and this is one of them. Like all of my songs, this is partly true and partly imagined. I've been this guy, and i know this guy. I emphasize with him, but i know he's full of shit.

Musically, this was a chance to use all of my guitars, trying to figure out where each one begins and ends. And another attempt at 'tempie country'. I feel like this tune is the logical follow up to the truckin' song. Also, this isn't 'country western'. It's country rock maybe. Or alt-country. Country western is a bit grand for this.

Lyrics
i got a wife down there in newport news
married out of high school
knocked her up my senior year
love sick and playing the fool
settled down to raise the kid
got a shipyard job
but a disappointed girl
and a crying child
weren't worth the price of my hot rod

cause i'm a home wrecker
i wreck my home
aint a house been built
that i can't bring down to the ground
like nothing doing
yeah i'm a home wrecker
i wreck my home
they say i like to travel
but i only hit the gravel
when somebody tells me go

got a buddy down there in stephen's city
i stayed with for a while
slept on a chair in his living room
most afternoons you know
just living loose and wild
he lived with his sister man she didn't like me none
i couldn't say
i disagreed
she moved in with a girlfriend
and my buddy laughed it off
but i could feel
him eyeing me

cause i'm a home wrecker
i wreck my home
aint a house been built that i can't
bring down to the ground like nothing doing
yeah i'm a home wrecker
i wreck my home
they say i like to travel
but i only hit the gravel
when somebody tells me go

when i was fifteen
one of my mom's boyfriends
said i'll do what i want with your mother
i waited till he fell asleep on the couch
and i worked him over with a louisville slugger
mama said now why'd you do that?
i wiped the blood off the bat and said...

Lovely sound
This is rich and full Craig - and the music and lyric are quite a change from your more up-beat retro posts.

I can hear a Lowell George version of this - and it sounds brilliant! So does the Levon Helm version.

Very good post - most impressive!

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I'm hearing echoes of the 70s singer/songwriters. Great use of space and dynamics. I really like the chorus. Vivid lyrics. I think we all know that guy!

Pickin my jaw up off the floor as I write this. The production value is off the chart. Those three chords, the way they're mixed, is to die for. Right down to the little thumb cymbal :-) too cool. You have outdone yourself Craig. My new fav Tempie tune.

i spent a while reproducing my last tune, a million tracks and so i wanted to simplify with this one, create lots of space. i was really happy with the acoustic sound, i always have trouble getting it the way i want to hear it.

Good hook, and the lyric develops it well. Good story telling, and the emotion in the vocal brings out the story well. Fabulous production, I really like the way you integrated the guitar sounds.

interesting chord progressions....and catchy for that reason. very clear and clever narrative; the lyrics read without the music and tell a very clear story. really excellent production and singing too.

alt-west I think. Really open sounding and clean. Sparkling guitars. very funny lyrics. You're right, he's and a**hole. Great vox, BTW.

wow! great song. I bet Nick Cave would be jealous if he heard this.
It's got the authentic southern gothic thing going.

one time i played nick cave all night during a date. when i was saying goodbye i said something like 'so did you have a good time?' and she said 'yeah but the music was kind of depressing'. so i've kept nick away from the girls since then lol. always glad when you like a solo dude thanks. now i've got to go listen to medium cool. have i heard that one? or did i miss it...

Epic Tempie
Bold narrative with that Paul Simon "am I singing or am I talking" verse. Conversational, but full of poetry. This is big time. This is a song that deserves multiple listens. The structure is grown up enough to get a girl pregnant so youngsters like me are going to have to sit back and try to learn a thing or two.

Great Storytelling
Great guitars, love the stereo separation and the great lazy drums. Your vox are top notch, I love how as each song comes by your vocal confidence just increases more and more. I love that you belt out "home wrecker" with such passion.
I love how you half talk the "mom's boyfriend's" segment.
Not alt.country, nor country and western for me. This is more in the American poet style of Springsteen, circa Tunnel of Love, for me. Wonderful work here Craig.

i wish
that i had these vocals back when i was a kid. who would have thought that practice actually works? tunnel of love is such a fantastic record. one of the best 'divorce' records ever. up there with willie's phases and stages and dylan's blood on the tracks. great stuff. glad you liked it man.

stole a helicopter and flew it into johnny cash's back yard to deliver a song he wrote. if i could fly i'd head straight to jamey johnson's house and see if he wants this. i wish i knew a way to get this stuff to somebody who cares, because i think my country tunes would sell if sung by somebody with some real pipes. and a real band. and a real recording studio lol.

70's AM Radio Friendly
This is a song that I remember from my youth. I had a red white and blue transistor radio and I would sword fight with the antenna every time this song came on. It was always on rotation with The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia and Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree. It's still one of my favorites and I usually sing it when I'm fixing my eye patch. I'll never forget the accident. Mom warned me.
