Lyrics
My Broken Sky
©2011 racerat

I hope for something different
When I open up my eyes
But it’s always just the same
Can’t say that I’m surprised

I wish that I could find
A kiss and a compromise
But it’s just out of reach
Can’t say I don’t try

Covered in this shroud
Carried on my shoulders
Lost here in the crowd
Ever weary soldier

I just can’t describe
The deepness of the tone
Of black, that fills the room
And coats these brittle bones

I pray it disappears
The broken sky will mend
So I can cross this sea
And find myself again

Rain down on me now, my broken sky
Rain down on me now, my broken sky
Rain down on me now, my broken sky
Rain down on me now, my broken sky

perfect for tonight
I have to share quite a compliment with you - it's late and I'm just sitting here painting in the studio with "Broken Sky" playing in the background and my wife pokes her head in asks, "who" am I playing. This is high praise as the usual comment is "what" are you playing? Nice post - enjoyed it a lot.

Thanks to you and your very musically astute wife! That happens to me, too. LOL about the difference inferred by "who" rather than "what" is playing! Glad I made the cut.

The guitar I used was my trusty '72 Les Paul Custom with a thick pickup setting through the Guitar Amp modeler in Logic Pro. So happy to hear my stuff is playing in Paris, one of my favorite cities- I got engaged there...;-) Thx Phil

The melodic phrasing you used during the verses are tricky and unconventional. Liked how the notes jump around. I'm surprised I never heard you before. Sky remedied that.

Terrific song writing RR. The blend of instruments sounds like a velvet backdrop for your serene vocals. The sum total so much more than any individual part. Great use of space in your arrangement. Nicely done sir

Thanks. I have been really getting into dissecting how reverb can be used to create space, distance and "cement" a final master mix together. I think reverb is one of the most misunderstood and misused tools in the digital box. Trying my best to start to get my head around it a little better.

Laid back vocal delivery and stripped down instrumentation are the perfect vehicle to deliver the lyric's world weary message. Effective imagery in the lyrics ("covered in this shroud", "coats these brittle bones"). Nice strumming pattern and bass line.

Trying to clear out the just started ideas, half-finished, half-dead. Just get some new stuff out there and not continue to second guess myself on every freakin' tiny decision. Writers block is one thing and perfectionism is the other. Two sides of the same coin for me. Thanks for the comment, support and the listen Karen.

Jazzy
Someone commented nice production - what else could we expect from you? This is lovely Phil - a slow, almost jazzy feel, and some beautifully broken vocals. This is what I'm aiming for - simple and acoustic, the song not all the little twiddly bits I get lost in.... you make it sound so easy!

I tried to keep it spare, which is always very hard to do in this world of unlimited tracks. I have to say the solo was comped to death. I LOVE Logic Pro's new comping tool. It's a life - and time -saver. You can really experiment with different versions and many times come up with something you might not have strung together naturally.

I'm not a great melody guy. I actually started this song with a simple piano melody line that went along with the rhythm guitar, then I sang to the melody line, then I deleted the piano part in the main section. A new process I've worked out. A crutch for a musical gimp. Thanks for the listen!

Well, to begin with, I'm one of those who isn't into lyrics much, unless of course they are too powerful to overlook. That is the case in this instance. You've painted a vivid, yet dark, lyrical image that really does a great job of conveying the emotion.

As for the song itself, it's very well written and has an easy (lazy) vibe, which leaves room for the listener to get lost in their thoughts.

Finally, your production is crystal clear. I only wish I could track and produce an acoustic guitar that clearly. Your reverbs are very tasteful and the mix is great.

I very muched enjoyed the listen; thanks for posting.

Corp Beef,
First of all I liked how you dealt with the whole Lady Gaga thread. Well done. I kept the f out of it, no need to have another comment in that sh*t storm. But you get props from me for your part.

Secondly, on the guitar, just so you know how it was tracked: I have a Taylor 814ce acoustic with the stock internal "Expression Pickup System". I ran one track DI from the internal pickup and I ran another track from a RODE NT 2000 condenser mic placed about 5 inches from the 12th fret. Then I mixed the inputs between them til I had what I liked. It's a good system I've found. You can trcak it once, but get freedom to adjust the sound from "clean" to "open room live" in the mix.

I love everything about this amazing tune of yours. Your voice sounds great and your guitar is beautiful. You always have the most original chord progressions. Always thinking outside the bun.

Exploring the space
Nice open feel. Intimate solo. Love the passing phrase that the piano plays at 3:16 and repeats again, very cool.

Oh, it's raining now...
What a great atmosphere you've captured.. love the non-standard turns the progression takes; makes you listen intently to keep with it... Touching sentiment, and a REALLY tasty solo section... I could hear Alan Parsons doing this song easily... Or even Pink Floyd... I'm totally charmed... Well done!!

Yup
Instantly live the vibe.
Guitars and keys work like a charm.
The addition of the orchestration is great. This is a fantastic dreamy indie rocker.
Phew!

Hey Phil. I haven't heard your stuff in a while. There's a great aura to this song. Nice and warm guitar tones. I like the vocal effects also - they smooth right into the mix.

Thanks Nick
Thanks for the listen Nick. I've been way out of the loop for a while now. I've been out of work for about 10 months and have just been made an offer...therefore my entire existence for the last months has been about getting a new paying gig. Hopefully after I get off the dole, the music will pick-up again. Nice that someone has been paying attention...;-) Cheers mate. I need a new one from you, too! It's been a while!

Where have I been. I need to subscribe to your latest work.... don't want you to think I am a curmudgeon... The acoustic quality and the chord progressions are taseful and I dig the personal lyrics.

great lyrics
loving the layered vocals and easy, jazzy drums. very cool organ and i love that you don't have it come in until the 2nd verse. each piece of this is great and it all comes together to create a really engaging tune, even though it's got that slow swing. awesome solo. this is too sweet. i love it.

Great listen!
Sorry late to this. Really like this one; keeps my attention; great guitar and base to accompany the mood. Funny, that post from st_ victor happened to me with one of your older songs I was playing at work (Faces on the Train). Keep working the tracks, Racerat.
