Description
Alto solo by Andy Sax

Andy wanted me to finish and post this tune, it is a personal piece for him.
"What a way to go!" was the original name of this one. How we come into the world, and the way a select few are allowed to leave is the subject. This piece was inspired during the same time as "Feathers" and is a companion to that piece.

Part one is 7/4 at 89 bpm Db major.
Part ll feature a relaxed 4/4, also in Db but a little faster, moving at 105 bpm.
Part lll is 9/8, Db is rendered with tensions not normally associated with the key.
The details of the death of Nelson Rockefeller were not the inspiration for this piece.

You have permission to download this tune and add it to your personal collection of Siren's Songs.

wow
would this be Prog Jazz? It's very refreshing to my pentatonic major/minor fatigued ears, a great opportunity to cleanse the musical palate, seems to me this would make a great sound track, love the time signature changes, amazing backer for Andy to do his thing! great job!

Andy and Daug!
Nothing progressive about that duo... we just make what we hear. Thanks for stopping by JD, in a way what you are doing with the two track thing is similar to our method. We use the same "there it is" techniques which you have found so exciting, we just have a few more tracks to lay down.

Hello Bill!
Thanks for the shout out, the subject matter is intense. IMHO every aspect of this tune is unique, you will not hear a sax solo like Andy's anywhere else... he nailed it.
Notice the choices Andy made as he navigated the tune... he is literally "inside the concept" but he is blowing against the piano lines in call and response fashion often "way outside" the tonality. Andy anticipates the surging rhythmic changes announcing the figures before they appear on the piano. So he is "leading" in the sense of, in improv the piano will "follow" the direction taken by the lead player. The effect is to ensure that overall the thing sounds like an improv piece, a core value for us.

Death By Misadventure
A scramble in the borderlands between order and chaos. The odd (to my 4/4 outlook) time signatures coupled with Andy's unrestrained choices make for an intense experience.

Hello Dave!
Thanks for your steady support. When I hear Andy's horn in things I am working on, I send him a file to play with, and most of time I get something amazing. As noted above Andy felt strongly about this piece and insisted it get finished and posted, I think it is about a year old perhaps, one of many...

Misadventures
This thing blasts out of the starting gate and doesn't let go. It blew my hair back. I have question about the key choice -- is that a natural choice for sax? Just wondering, being used to my EADGB. And what does " tensions not normally associated with the key" mean? The sax was a mindblower. The ending is great also. What a composition. DLed for future (mis)adventures.

I will try and give you answers...
Horns in general like flat keys. Guitar players like sharp keys, 6 stringers that play with horns often gravitate to Eb tuning, so things will be easy for everyone. Not that sax can't get into E major and wail, the instrument seems to excel in flat keys. Sax is the closest instrument to the human voice. Choir works best in flat keys, (that's probably subjective, the rest is not).
This one's in Db, a whole lotta flats going on... Andy didn't seem to have any trouble. The key of "D" seems to be bright, light and easy. "Db" is serious and muscular. You can see why I chose it for this composition? People say "C#" is "tinnie". The best example being Blind Blake's classic "West Coast Blues" , which doesn't sound "right" is any key other than C#. (I am making a joke and a point at the same time.)
DIssonance is what music is about. Tension is what is created when you put an F on top of a nice C chord. F, the fourth over C, is about as far away from C as you can get without modulation. Make a D major grip chord on the guitar and hammer on and off the F# a "G" with yer pinky finger. Instant tension and release. The fourth "wants" to resolve to the third. Pete Townsend made a career of it...
Tension and release is what it is all about, try and write something without any changes... well, you will sound like some classical music, no offense to our classically trained friends, jazz is about chromatics. The idea is to discover what you can do with a Dbmj#11 chord, or Db#5b5 chord. A good way to get into this area is to start by placing all your chords such that the third is in the root. Try and make your bass line come out smooth and voice lead such that you can "hear" tension and release... chances are you will "hear" what to do, based on your lifetime of playing great music. It really helps me to "visualize", "see" the tensions available. I hope that helps...

Alto Sax
I chose the alto sax on this one. Once hear the tonic I dispose of the theory and allow Daug's composition to lead the way in an open bore improvisation only worrying about the notes that are not played. I suppose this is how I approach just about everything. This is also the horn that my father bought for me in 1973. We never really got to say goodbye.

More time changes than Dr. Who
Hi Guys. With more time changes than Dr. Who this intense piece blasts off and never lets up. Andy's sax is out of this world. Musicianship far beyond my mortal coil. Take care both of you. Regards, Peter.

Great stuff!!!
This is so good. I just loved the whole adventure. Great floaty improv sax
and keys. I really like at around 3:45 when the discorded textural sound and synth bass washes behind the sax. Great stuff!!!!
