Description
Players:
Chris Watson (Kicbal): Lead and back-up vocals, Synths and Drum programming
Edward Berriman (Ted23): Guitars

A song about the inner and outer struggles that everyone goes through and how hopefully we can keep our heads up till better times prevail.

This tune started out with the chorus riff that I played using a synth guitar sound. The rest of the song was backward engineered from there. I got this idea that I wanted a very full sound and many of the tracks especially in the chorus are doubled, guitars, bass, keys, even all the vocals are done with two tracks each then panned out from the the center. The result is an unwieldy 45 track song. I think I'll try and keep things a bit more simple next time. Of course I had to replace the synth guitar with the real thing and Ed came through brilliantly. I asked him to do a solo at the end and it really is amazing and so fitting to the song. The lyrics or rather the general theme I've had in my head for a while and once written, easily flowed into a fitting vocal melody. Lots of moods and ear candy going on here so enjoy.

Lastly, a ton of thanks to Ed and his superb guitar playing and ideas. It's always a pleasure writing and playing music with him.

Try to make sense of this
Thousand bits of consequence
All at once firing
All at once conspiring
Ratcheting the stakes
The risks that I take
Out of control it all slips
away, away, away
I start back at zero
A zero at zero, yeah
Just a no luck loser
and on and on and on

No movement
The world in grey
If you can fight—re-ignite
You can get away

(chorus)
Just one chance
Is all I need to be
On top again
Wishing for a better day
Broken but looking for a better way
It’s burned into my mind
Battered dreams
Looking for a little light to shine
A passioned chain-reaction
And I’m on top again.

Salad days fall away
Nothing but sad memories
I fled south to where
The sun shines bright
Maybe shed some light
On how to kick-start a new life
But all I feel, is the sun and sand
burning me—burning me

Once full of dreams
Once brave
Once the King
Seizing every day

(chorus)
Just one chance
Is all I need to be
On top again
Wishing for a better day
Broken but looking for a better way
It’s burned into my mind
Battered dreams
Looking for a little light to shine
A passioned chain-reaction
And I’m on top again
Oh, Just one chance
All I need to be
On top again
Wishing
Working
Looking for a better way
Oh, a Little light to shine
And I’m on top again

Oh man is this good! The synth based verses have a cool Tears for Fears vibe. But the rocking chorus with Ed's heavy guitars really sell it! Really digging his soloing! Pro production and mix!

Cool reference
Alas, I suppose I am indeed a product of the 80s, even when I'm not trying to mimic any certain artist, but I always appreciate sounding like someone.

Chris & Ted
You excelled here--you guys really know your stuff and this is readily apparent and well on display on this superb track. Now Chris/Ted, I am no authority on this style of music, but I have a great deal of faith in my ears--they never lie when something is as exceptionally well done as presented here (and yanno, this will shock you but I happen to have danced many a night in my younger years to music just like this--and loved it) Thanks again guys--big applause from the frozen hinterlands of Minnesota! Means a lot when a song works for people even when its a little outside of their radar. If it's any consulation, I was making the final tweaks to the mix earlier today in sunny 88 degree weather here in Phoenix.

Ha Ha
45 tracks for a basic pop/rock tune is one of three things: sheer madness, gross beginner inexperience and musical faux pas, or dumb luck that the whole thing didn't descend into a hopeless sonic mudbog.
Thanks for the listen.

Very well
thought out arrangement and performances throughout..... love the softness of the vocal against the synths and other harsher/ stronger sounds.... harmonies are great and i get the 'Tears for Fears' element that Andrew mentioned.... again I love the vocal harmonies, regards M

I love this track and not just because  feature in it :)
It just gets better with every listen with it's subtle synths and layers.
Your a master musical sculptor!
Its always interesting to ride along and see how someone else works and shapes their tracks and this shaped up sooooooooo good!

Has an 80's vibe. Complementary sound choices and interwoven synth lines propel things along quite nicely. Good vocals, and some good images ("thousand bits of consequence") in the lyric. Great production. Ed's guitar is sounding great.

Good song!
Hi Chris. There is a really nice balance between the synth dominated verses and the guitar driven chorus. Your vocals are very good and Ted's guitars are fantastic. Like the drum programming as well. Good song! Take care, Peter.

Yes
I wanted that exact change form synth heavy to guitar heavy within one song. I really like how some of Maroon 5 songs use a heavy synth bass in their chorus against a driving guitar. That is what I tried to do with this tune. Thanks for the comments.

Very 80's flavor. I grew up listening to 80's music...so no complaints here. Love the vocals and the lyrics. I am a fan of Ed's so of course I love is playing. Great job all the way around!

I think it's a sign of good production and arrangement skills to use 45 trks and make it sound like far less. I've never come close to that many, but if i did, it think it would be a mess whether the song itself was good or bad. kudos.

Thanks hmmm
Funny that my slight influences for this song was Muse, Radiohead, Maroon 5 and Tal Bachman. None of which are 80s. But alas I did spend my formative teenage years steeped in 80s music so I guess the time period has permanently stained my brain. But I am glad that you liked it even if it appears to be written for another time.

Thank you all for the comments and for stopping by. Of course this sound wouldn't have all it's impact without Ed playing some tasty sparse guitar during the verses and then the all out stuff in the chorus.

Really interesting
I love the pre-chorus and chorus. Chorus has kind of a Duran Duran thing going. (second time I used a DD comparison today.) It's really poppy without being too synthy. Owl City.

dreamy and inspirational. i hear euro electro pop influences from the past...and then ed wades in with his guitars and then it morphs into something else....more indie-rock-pop. great vocal delivery and lyrics. i really liked the synth leads....almost amusing in their playfulness. it's funny chris...you and ed sound similar when singing. great guitar break. very clear mix...sounds fab on hphones.

Your synth control is brilliant Chris. Seamless crossovers, fades and morphs.
Hackneyblokes comment made me smile and reminds me of the 3rd verse from our summer collab where I sometimes forget who's you and who's me :)

Organic feel
The melody line has a very free flowing feel like it's being sung for the first time and you may sing it differently each time. The synths are doing their fair share of talking on this. Good work on the lyrics. Didn't like the scary guy haha! - SS

45 track 80s
45 tracks? I don't know if I'm hearing everything but it sounds just great. Got an instant recall of Depeche Mode in the beginning but I don't know why... must have been some synth tone. Memory is a weird thing. Lyrics conveying hope or cynic hopelessness (I like the last interpretation more). Love the the pre-chorus. Excellent solo.

Yeah the lyrics, especially in the verses are more of a hopeless tinge. The chorus is I suppose the eternal optimist in me that keeps pushing. Glad you liked it.
