Description
This song is an online collaboration that is probably about 13 years old. I wrote this to help myself heal and deal with my older brother's insanity, due to drug use. He lost his job, family, house, and we had to keep him at a distance to protect my own immediate family. He was a self destructive alcoholic, and drug user, who had big problems with his priorities in life as a husband and father. We tried for years to help him snap out of it, and alas he is now older and pretty much alone. His children have been so traumatized by this that they won't have anything to do with him even to this day. He has grandchildren he has never seen. Just a huge loss of what was a promising life. He is an extremely intellegent person who had it all, and just threw it away because he wanted to party. I have healed quite a bit, but all I can do is shake my head, at the legacy he has left his kids. I have tried to show my nieces, and nephews as much love as I could, but being his younger brother, they just didn't come around me much. The devestation of family relationships just rippled out from there, and it is/was just a huge mess. Makes me ever so greatful that I didn't take that path with my own family. I have the same genes, and could have gone there, but I love my family too much to do that to them. I am sooooo happy I have a close immediate family. It's not a total loss. I've used him as an example of what not to do with your life, or how not to treat family. I am totally amazed that alcohol is a legal drug, as much devistation as it has wrecked on people. My older brothers could have been poster reps for alcoholism and drug use. What a total waste!

This did help me heal. I totally love the acoustic "cameo" that Mark did. I LOVE ovation acoustic sound, and this has so much intensity, and drama, I just had to have it in there.

Mark Connors - Lead, and rythm electric guitars, acoustic guitar
Kenny_B - Bass
Fred E. Jam - Author music, and lyrics, producer, mix & master, vocals and all other insturments

Lyrics
I've wittnessed the fire in my brother's eyes
Watched him stumble, watched him fall
Looked on as he forced his way to the comming good-byes
Thought to myself he's gonna loose it all

Why can't you play it straight? Don't you know who are?
You've forgotten all your manners and your goals
Evryone around you says you're out so far
That you act like you don't, that you really know

Why the hard times? Should be happiness
Fight for reality open your eyes and see
Why the hard times? Should be happiness
Fight for reality open your eyes and see, your life

If I had my way you'd be alright,
and all the torment would be in the past
And you'd learn to love instead of fight
And all relationships would start to last

You fight off the demons as they fly
But it makes them want you even more
You think that all I tell you will be lies
And the demons say it's not like before

Why the hard times? Should be happiness
Fight for reality open your eyes and see
Why the hard times? Should be happiness
Fight for reality open your eyes and see, your life

If I had my way
This is exceptionally cool. The intro was good in its own right as an instrumental. You have a great voice too well done guys you can all be proud of this

Thanks Neil
This song is living proof that music can be medicine. I guess it's why I am such a music nut. I need a lot of medicine. My immediate family life now is a happy one, but we have so much pain all around us in this modern day mess we call a world, we still need to use music to heal. It literally saved my life when I was a teenager, and has been healing me ever since. What a gift from God, this music is that we've been allowed to have. I could not see my life without it. For me it truely is a lifestyle. Thanks for the listen and comments.

You said it all there KC
That's exactly what I was after with the guitar leads. I can't tell you how many players tried to do what Mark nailed right away. He seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. I demoed it with a midi guitar and mod wheel, and he did it immediately! Made the whole song come to life when he nailed that. Mark is a world class musician, and I really miss him. I've done several with him and it's always the same. He knocks it out of the park! And one of the best guys you'll ever meet. Never a cross word between us. He has been like a brother to me. I need to go an see if I can find him again. He stopped responding to my emails after very bad weather in Texas. I wish I knew he was alright. If I had my way he would be... hehehe. Looks like you have a new one up now. I need to go have a listen. Bet it's a good un. Will do when i get on my good speaker system again. Thanks for the listen.

A wonderful, heartfelt song..
Hi Freddy. Tragic back story... It must have been very difficult. Good to see you could channel your concerns into music though. This is a wonderful, heartfelt song. The musicianship is first class. Love the drums, bass and guitars. You do a very good job singing what you probably wish were lyrics you didn't have to write. Typical pro-quality mix/master as well. Thanks for sharing this song. Warm regards, Peter.

Well I've seen the same thing from you Pete.
I am keenly aware that you tend to write based on your life, past and present. The song of yours, we are waiting on Miche for, is the same type of thing isn't it? You wrote is as a sort of medicine for something that happened to you? It is amazing how we are allowed to use music to capture our feelings and lives (sometimes). Maybe I need to lighten up some, and hopefully I did after letting this out. Definitely salve on a wounded soul. I can't think of a better use for the art. Thanks for the feedback and support my good friend.

The healing power of music
Nice one Fred! I agree with the intensity and dramatic tones here. Percect how the acoustic and the electric guitars hold it together.
Nice Post!

Chill wind
opening really effective and aches in the heart, continued by mean extended notes.

Nice intimate, sincere vocals.

Strange these paths we tread. My brother is just the perfect Dad, with three affectionate and happy daughters and a patient, beautiful wife, and all of them are very outgoing, full of life in a sunny climate. I, on the other hand, am an ever-more-withrdrawn recluse, sent out on a mystic road that takes me ever further from the wholesome balance of my brother's life, with no family of my own, no sweetheart, no companion but the strange font of a poetic heart. i expect he probably worries about me a lot!

It is so peculiar the way it just seems to go its own way. i've never dictated anything. Indeed the times i have tried to go a certain way of my own devising, i have always fallen flat on my face. i certainly never thought for a single moment that one day i would write a song, for instance! i feel it is the right life for me, and i am at peace with it, but how would it be if i was predisposed to a life of agony and chaos, a destructive cycle that i could not break out of?

Anyway, this is supposed to be about the song, isn't it? Nice job, Freddy, and you are well supported.

Thanks for the post. Glad that is has been a form or therapy for you.

Take care

Marc

Well Marc
I don't know all of the facts of your existence from what you've told me, but I don't get a hint of insanity from you. I think you're probably more of an historian, and lover of the oceans, than substance abuser gone insane? Being a recluse doesn't seem to do anyone any harm, and moreover you don't seem to have immediate family depending on your for stability the way his did. So I wouldn't dare make any such comparrison. From what I've seen your situaltion is rather harmless compared to his. I get the feeling you are a hard worker, and lover of history and the oceans. I can see nothing amiss with that.

As I said this song is quite old for me, and a bit of history for yours truely. It was, and is a very personal song. That actually makes it all the better to share. Sharing this type of emotion is a good use of the muse if I do say so myself.

Thanks for the listen...

by the guitars, it's a wonderful composition, but so sad to hear the story behind it.

But that sadness was allowed to be expressed, and thus released. That's the best way to deal with it. Music is perfect for this.

Appreciate your listening and feedback.

This is Alright
Deep lyrics and meaning, the conviction in your inflections grabs and holds the listener. The guitar line is really nice as it has a meandering feel. The acoustic is just right easing up on the intensity then back with the solo, blown away!

Many of us have had families affected by alcoholism and ultimately the greatest thing is forgiveness

Of course forgive....
But not forget. Especially if after years you look and nothing has changed, nothing learned..... It's hard to trust when that's all you've seen for decades. So I do understand his children protecting their homes from a percieved threat. Thus the ripple. A generation traumatized. So glad my kids were shielded from this. Their formative years not compromised....

Dramatic
Very well done, sir. I won't presume to offer any wisdom. It is a sad story. I wonder if the line is very fine, and we fall to one side or the other.

The lyrics and music are, as I said, dramatic. They go together well. Your vocal delivery comes across as heartfelt. The guitar lines are expressive. I also liked the transition just after 4:00 and the dreamy quality in what follows. Then the re-introduction of bass and the ramp-up to fadeout. Well done.

Wonderful!
This could have worked as an instrumental, the music is strong enough. Great work from all involved, love the guitar work on this! And the production is stellar. Very emotive piece. I read your song description, very sad. I guess most of us who came up from the lifestyle of the 60's and 70's and manage to reach middle age (I'm 56) know a few people who didn't know when to quit the party life and payed the price.
Very good song!

If I had My Way
The long intro was very fitting for this piece. The subject matter sucks, but what is that saying? You can't pick your family? Sorry you've had to deal with that, but as for the song, it's great. Your drum performance and sound are pro. I really enjoyed the piece. thanks for posting.

wow freddy...what a story. your family and my family sound like they were separated at birth.
now the music - fantastic rich mix from the off. i'm listening on headphones. i find the guitar noodles panned out too far and too loud...they're a bit dominant.
love the feel of this piece...your assured vocals....and that guitar break is sensational. loving the drums!!!! can't wait to hear what you do with our collab.
