It's What You Deserve - part 1+2 (w/Huffy)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This song dates back to the mid 90s and originally only existed as a badly recorded fragment of an idea from a rehearsal warm up from my old band

The original cassette recording can be found here...and features Ian Hough on vocals, Dave Griffiths and me on guitar

Huffy (Ian Hough) is still pretty active, playing small acoustic sets frequently in the UK. We have intermittently kept in touch with each other since we were in a band together and we always said that we would like to finish this song one day. Back in early Novemeber, Huffy sent me an acapella vocal track based on the original recording...so I have tried to finsh the song...but still feel its unfinished (hence the part 1 and 2)

Thanks to Magnatone for being our keyboard player

Vocals - Huffy
Piano - Karen
Gutars/Bass/Drums etc - bryn

Nice
This is a cool song. I like the lyrics and the vocal melody reminds me of something that Marillion would do. I wonder if the unfinished feel comes from all the reverb, my personal taste is a more flat and upfront vocal treatment. I also think the guitar could be brought into a bit more sharper focus without overtaking the vocals. At any rate, its nice that this song was redone again and given the chance to be heard rather than eventually decaying to nothing on an old tape.

re Description
I think it was actually early 90's maybe even late 80's. The second half for me as vocalist is nearer to what I imagined - but the first half is nearer to the full potential of this fragment if it had ever been finished. Great work - I love it .

Great song
This is so cool.... a song that takes so much time to mature. Some songs are born in an hour, others need their time.
Has a fine oldschool vibe!
Very much enjoyed!

cool little melody
i like how everything bubbles up to the surface and then sinks down and bubbles back up. also like what you did with the distorted guitar on the 2nd half - how it's just barely there. has a death cab for cutie feel, high praise imo. i like it alot.

The song has a R.E.M vibe for me, the vocals maybe?
Good production!
I enjoyed listening.

bryn
this is outstanding. sounds perfect for the tune. i can see Peter, Bjorn and John doing this. Greta song, your vocals are a nice addition and one question: how did you ever get Karen to play on this? she's such an elusive little beastie.

Super cool piece, the transitions between verses and chorus is seemless. Love the instruments, all played so well. The link to part 2 is awesome. Nice vocal too well done

Further info re What you Deserve
My take on this is a bit different - I remember for sure that Bryn came round to my flat in Dudley and he palyed guitar and we jammed a few songs together cos I had the words. This was in 1988 or 1989 (I know cos I moved to Leamington December 1990 and it wasn't that year). About a weeklater I rehearsed with Bryn and friend David (we later became a band Super 8- about 18 months later) and we jammed it again and Bryn taped it on cassette. 20 years later Bryn is long settled in Phoenix and we are back in touch - he asks do I remember that idea as like me he had never forgotten it. He sends me a copy of the original recording, I record an acapello vocal and send it back - this is Bryn's re-working. At the time the feeling in my mind was a sarcastic comment on Money and love in music a la Can't buy me Love, What do you want by Adam Faith etc...and definitely expressed a loss of love contrasted with the concept of being rich.

you are right
it was definately late 80's that the scratchy cassette version was recorded....my memory now is that we were setting up a rehearsal and just you me and dave were there...waiting for the other folks to arrive....and i think it was when we called ourselve revillino....a very fluid 7+ piece line up

so...we recorded the idea in the rehearsal room...and i can remember coming round to your place once in dudley to try to refine the idea but we didnt get very far

as you say it is one of those song fragments, never truly developed but also never forgotten or resolved

you know...i am curious about trying to re-record some of those super 8 songs again now i know what i am doing (kind of)

cheers for sending the vocal track

its like looking at a digitally restored foto in a way....

Interesting back story. Glad to see the song has burst forth (after a long gestation period :-)). Like the vocals and the arrangement. Lots of intriguing things happening. Well done. Regards to all, Peter.

Catchy
that chord sequence. I'm not sure that it adds up to a whole song for me. It works ok under the melody (though I don't like dramatic lines like "what -pause- you -pause- deserved": too much suspicion that you couldn't get the lines to scan) but then you keep spinning it instrumentally.
