Description
My first release of this song elicited helpful feedback from many people which I have tried to incorporate. As I learn more about mixing I gain a higher level of appreciation for the art of it and am further impressed by many people's abilities here at MJ.

This song started out as a session in which I was showing my daughter Audrey how Logic works. The lyrics had been written previously and I comped in some chords to create a verse and chorus. We laid down the rough take with guitar and vocals to get the tune in place. The vocals had a nice raw quality but did not correctly deliver the lyrics so they were recorded separately later. The main rhythm guitar was good from the rough take and we added a second guitar for the chorus. From there it was time to explore the possibilities of the song. Drums, Bass, mellotron, super high bass, and ebow were added. When the WIP version was released alot of the feedback was around EQ which I tried to improve. Another bit of feedback suggested updating the lyrics which I did not do. Then onward to the mixdown and much tweaking. This stage is always a challenge for me to hear things as a whole while focusing on an element that needs attention. And then, for the final bounce down to mp3 I just had to let go and get this song out!

I hope I have improved the song. Feedback and comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening.

v2
Papag, this one is 'cleaner' than v1, but, believe it or not, i like the first one better. It was rawer, more open, and had more 'depth' to me. This is definitely an improved mix, but something's missing that was really compelling about the older version. I'm not really one to talk, tho. I'm constantly re-doing older tunes that loses some of the life of the original. But on the more positive side, you can hear a distinct "quality" difference in the recording itself, so mission accomplished.

changes
thanks for listening and your feedback is right in that the "polish" squished a bit of the edge out...I am a novice at mixing/eq in general and in fact the original vocals I recorded when capturing the song had the real "feel" that I was going for but the lyrics were butchered.

original vocs
that could be the very intangible quality that i couldn't quite put my finger on.

Nifty
There is a sound that sounds synth-ish to me, but I don't see a synth listed in your explanation. In that case it's a pretty creative use of guitar.

Overall very nice sounds and good arrangement.

synth-ish sound
the syth-ish sound is actually a midi bass played super high that I stumbled on while doing the original bass parts and then it became the "glue" instrument for the song...funny how that worked out. thanks for your comments

Remember
Sounds great. Much better mix. About the rawness, I can't comment on that. If there were to be a nit, the bass sounds a little muddy, a little too far away (headphone listen). If that got punched up a bit, the overall might sound ... uhhh ... punchier. Good work. Catchy tune.

Mix
I am still learning how to listen. Hope my next tune gets the bass better. Then it's on to more realistic percussion and then...vocals...ahhhhhhhhh. Best to just keep my head down:)

thanks for your comments

tight?
I appreciate your response. I tried to keep this tune concise and was really challenged with the effects. I'm glad you liked it.

Love this tune -
nice use of different voices and space in the mix. Vocals are little too up front for my taste - when they are effected like this I'd like them to sit in the mix a little more. Nice guitar stuff.

voices and space
i am all thumbs when it comes to mixing...at least that what my ears say. I agree on the vocals being to up in the mix, mighta been the room I mixed in that threw me off (or my thumbs). thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Coolness
The vocals sound a bit different in this mix. I think the previous vocals were a bit louder and less compressed.

I like this version much better! I can't remember if the previous version had harmonies on the chorus or not. I like them! Great stuff man!

harmony
yes, there is a high voice in there...it was raised in the mix. I took EQ feedback from v1 and tried to make the song a bit cleaner.

thanks for taking the time to "hear" the changes and provide comments

I Remember The Way v2
This is killer! There's a big 80s sound to this like something off Bowie's Let's Dance album! I think the only thing as good as the song itself is the mix and production!

Remember the Way
hey papa - well this is terrific! i heard v1 and remember liking it very much - i'd have to listen side by side for comparison but this sounds great to my ears. really compelling beat, cool instrumentation - love those thing-a-ma-gigs at 2:05 through the end. very cool ending!

Mixing is definitely an art, and it's something I struggle with as well. I think you did a nice job with the placement of everything (the vocals were a tad hot imo), so you are well on your way. The song itself was very cool; at least you aren't struggling with songwriting!! Thanks for posting.

rocky55, it's cool that you feel "energy" from the tune. I was hoping to get some in there. I am still learning about the digital mix world and sometimes feel that the whole computer bit saps the juice. Thanks for listening and your comments.

Wow. The programmed keyboard piece at the ending was really cool!

I loved it when an artist post a description of how the song was crafted. It would always make a song more enjoyable for me when listening.

Keyboard at end
First, let me say, I love your latest tune.

The programmed keys at the end were a nice "accident" that occurred as I was jamming on the keyboard bass and jumped up a few octaves. Then I cut it a bit and found a few nice sections. It was the last instrument added to the mix. Glad you liked it. Thanks for listening and your comments.

80's?
It's funny that people can pinpoint a decade for the vibe. The ending of the song was found in my jamming when I moved a bass riff up a few octaves. Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Enjoyed this
I didn't hear v1 but I liked the drive in this. The bass really keeps it moving along. The left to right pan at the end was a surprise that made me smile. Nice job. I'll look out for more of your stuff. Cheers Grahame

Yes, the bass part helped the tune a good bit. It seemed to fit. Drums and bass are my weakest side in self-composing. Thank you for your comments.
