Description
Two months ago a great composer died.

His music touched my heart like no other. His name was John Barry.

An original composition, this is a tribute to a wonderful composer and a true gentleman.

Hi Charlie........
I too loved John Barry's music. I loved his music from the early days to his last works. Out of Africa being my all time favourite.

Your tribute, had I not know it was by you, would have instantly got me into thinking it was a John Barry piece, so really well done. You hit the nail on the head perfectly.

I'm off now to listen again to your tune....

Take care.

Paul

You and I are both film music lovers
and we share a great love of Barry's music which I think is in a class by itself.

Thanks for the listen Paul and for posting your very kind comments.
Cheers,
Charlie

I can't comprehend how one fine composer emulates the work of another fine composer. Over my simple mind! All I know is this is some fine work!

I know
what you're getting at Andrew but doesn't everything we hear and especially love in some way become a part of us?

Maybe it's a form of channeling - who knows but if I can bring the kind of beauty into the world that Barry did I'd be a very happy composer.
Thanks my friend,
Charlie

Dances with Memories
Loved his work, too. My favourite of his film scores was 'Dances with Wolves', and i am really taken by the similarity between your lovely tribute and this particular work of his.

There is the same sweeping, majestic sky and untrammelled landscape.

Great stuff. Much enjoyed. Wouldn't it be a marvellous thing to leave such beautiful tracks behind for millions to enjoy after you're gone? Don't think i'm going to find out, but a old muddler can still fantasise!

Cheers now

Flowing and Melodic
The harmonies and sense of breathing through your careful phrasing here are finely done Charlie. There are some moments in this work that really glow with the gold of a sunset, like shimmering peaks above an already beautiful landscape (1:25 to 1:38 for example). Your subtle use of dissonance in spots makes this all the sweeter in the resolution.

Two nits - I would love to hear the flute a little higher in the mix, and the last note (to my ears) feels like it needs to sound a little longer. On the other hand, I can also appreciate an interpretation that John's life ended suddenly, and your artistic choices reflect this.

A wonderful tribute my friend. I'm sure John would be very touched.

Take care,
Doug

For so many reasons Doug,
your comments always mean a great deal to me.

I had been playing with the mix for a while now and tried making the flute more prominent but then it took away from the deeper tones. Still there must places for it to shine. And last notes always throw me. I'm never quite sure when to let go, it's good to hear more a objective voice.
I'm glad you enjoyed this.
Thanks my friend,
Charlie
