Description
When you're a kid in college and you hear somebody traveling for business you think it sounds so cool, and then you graduate and you actually do it and you realize it sucks. And then you have a family and you realize you didn't know the meaning of the phrase 'it sucks', and you realize this while sitting at a hotel bar with a bunch of strangers and a football game on the tv and a chatty bartender and you're not listening or watching or anything, you're just thinking get me the hell out of here. Or that's my experience anyway. I used to travel all the time. After i missed the first year of my daughter's life experience, and my wife threatened to shoot me, I got a job that didn't require any travel. I'll admit i miss the expense account. And some nights when the family is bearing down on me like a mac truck i might even miss the dingy hotel bar. But i don't miss missing my people. As the song goes, memories hurt a lot when you don't make them. So that's what this tune is about, sitting in a bar wishing I was home.

Musically i've been playing a lot of guitar, trying to push myself, especially soloing. I've been watching a lot of dweezil zappa, i really like his style. i spent a lot of time coming up with an interesting solo for this one. I admit I had to play it on two tracks, because i kept screwing up the one transition - fat fingers. But I have my rig the way i want it now and i was dancing on those pedals like jesco white, word. Hope yall dig it.

Lyrics
you're in a hotel bar
and you're somewhere between thinking about
what you were and what you are
and there's a girl talking way too loud
like she's unhappy in her skin
and you just want to pack it in

and there's football on tv
but it's not your team without a friend
who knows it's your team
and the bartender's trying to pass time
talking about his kids and wife
and it's twisting the knife

Pop genius my friend. Like the bastard child of Sub Pop meeting Alex Chilton. This rocks like a honeymooners camper van. Gives me an Apples in Stereo vibe too.

bastards
do you ever think about the fact that 'alex chilton' sounds like a porn star name? i'm always surprised when i see a photo of him and he doesn't have a mustache. and yeah i'm in a sub pop groove. the next one is already headed in the same direction. it's the tempie bassmaster strat. i used to play directly into GB and now i've got my amp out of storage and my wife thinks a 14 year old has moved into the basement. and apples in stereo? i'll take it! (although i doubt it's justified)

That guitar was...
cookin! Your lyrics fit the song like paper towels on a paper towel roll. I like the story there. Your guitar lead at the end was sweet stuff. Great job on the vocals and the overall mix. Dang, wish I could do that.

Thanks for the download :)

brawny
this was going to be a country tune but i thought the lyrics were too obviously country and i hate to be obvious. glad you liked the mix. it took forever because there are so many layers. also because i had to mix it on the monitors so i had to wait until i had the house to myself :)

Power pop...
Good description of the back story, Craig. Like way you have woven it into a song. Power pop! Well done. Regards, Peter.

i love power pop but i have a difficult time playing it straight. Relic67 is the man to see if power pop is your thing. he's like a one man sloan (but with more personality).

That rocks! I love the guitar and bass sounds. The backing vocals are also great!

shred-tastic
as usual there's a lot to love in your tune...
lots of pleasant surprises and unusual juxtapositions.
uber-cool to have half of a two minute hurtin' song made up of slabs of guitar noise.
Hearty cheers and applause!

hurtin' song
love that you used that phrase. i was hoping people would pick up on the fact that's its really just a hurting song being carried along on a mardi gras float. i was thinking about blur as i put this together - how they can write an entire album in a two minute song, half of which is a guitar solo. glad you liked it man.

Love yer writing, man. Always real world and close to the bone with a twist. This is one axe-tastic workout. A virtual guitar army. I dig it though.

P.S.I ALWAYS play my breaks with two tracks.

practice makes better, at least
ha there is a lot of guitar in there. not much space in this one. i wanted it to roil with guitar noise. that's a great word. roil. some day i'll be able to just sit down and record a solo beginning to end without neighboring string noise. it's on my bucket list.

..
nice, liked the riffage after the solo from about 1:30 on, that sounded really cool. You could have drawn out that riff for another 30 seconds or so and I would have like that. One of those styles of songs that could fit on a movie soundtrack somewhere.

i'm learning how to put it all together
i've got severe ADD so my solos tend to be really choppy and skip from one idea to the next. but you're right, there is a time to work with a riff and see where it goes. thanks for the listen and the comment dude.

Heavy duty
Dont think I have heard such a big wall of sound coming from you before, this has an intensity unlike your other songs. I like the lead and that one high pitched string bend you get. I hear ya about missing out, there seems to be no safe middle ground, damned if you do and damned if ou dont! great song !

i fluctuate wildly between wall of sound and lots of space. just haven't had an itch to really layer it up lately, until now. must be spring. thanks for the listen man.

14 Year Old In The Basement...
And he's pals with J Mascis and Thurston Moore!! Man, this is an unusually noisy tune for you.

You've described that "wish I was home" feeling rather well. The line about watching football stands out for me. It really expresses the loneliness you feel as you cry into your peanuts while Dallas wins and some fool smacks you on the sunburn.... huh?

I think the "jesco white" dance step on the different pedals was a good idea too. There are a lot of colorful and interesting (and fast) licks that might get lost in the roux if you didn't get all Emeril Lagasse on the stew and kick it up a notch.

This song also reminds me of the old Tempie toons you first posted here when you were still just on AM radio. Oh, those were the days.....

I like the lyric "unhappy in her skin". Vocals and groove sound punk, but the bg vocals moves it back into the pop realm I think. Nice lead break!

reno is the worst
your choice of hotels in reno is limited to rent by the hour places or casinos. and a casino is the most depressing place on the planet to stay if you're not drunk. i used to have breakfast at 5:30am before heading out to the office and there'd still be a hundred nearly dead, smoking retirees sitting at the slot machines like zombies. i get the creeps thinking about it.

Cool
Very catchy tune with an infectious groove to it.

Dig the fully distorted guitar stuff. A guitar on the verge of feedback at any second is a good guitar.

Cool lyrics and vox as well.

Nice one!

a guitar on the verge of feedback
i was listening to an interview where evh was talking about the rig he uses and how he never uses a distortion pedal, it's all guitar setup and harmonics (and amp distortion). fun stuff. some day i'll be able to shred like finkeldink.

Can so relate
to these lyrics. You are absolutely right about the supposed glamour of work travel from a distance and the reality that it is just tedious or even worse!! probably need this on the ipod to play next time i am stuck in one of those work overnight hotels in Manchester UK! Cheers Mark

tedious is a good word
it's not all bad. spending somebody else's money is never ALL bad. depends where you are i guess. in a major city at least there are decent options for food. if you're stuck in suburban hell and hitting the local TGI Friday's every night then any suicidal feelings you may have are completely justified.
