Fukushima or Blessed Island w/awigze

Description
Eleven days ago Andy Wigzell aka awigze sent me a note that said simply - Budfix. I turned to my new favorite writing assistant - the Chordbot app for iPhone and started developing a chord structure in 5/4 (something new for me). I was able to rearrange and listen on the subway - at work etc. I exported the resulting midi file and dropped it into GarageBand and then played with different voices and tempos - cutting and pasting and creating some new tracks until I came up with what I thought was a suitable bed for Andy to work with. I made a point of creating something that was unlike any of the other songs we've collaborated on - because so far Andy has always reached deep and come up with amazing and surprising results no matter what I throw at him. I sent my mix off to him on 4/2 and waited - hoping he would get into it. When I didn't get an immediate response I worried. Foolish me. Last night I found this mix in the mail without a word - just "Fukushima or Blessed Island". I assume these were choices but I liked the duality and went with it. Once again Andy delivered.

Andy says: Kevin's track reminded me of a relentless wave.

Presto change-o
I like the moods and melodies in here. Pulse just keeps pushin along while the sax dances on top of the chord changes. I think this is a candidate for some modern dance work.

Thanks for the download :)

I knew if gave Andy enough room and a pulse
he'd do something incredible - and he did. I just saw a wonderful modern dance performance on Friday - funny you should mention. It had some great live music accompaniment.

5/4
I'm not sue what to say except I really like this piece.
The saxes sound great. Are the 'treated 'in anyway?
They almost sound like Tibetan horns.
The rhythm ( despite being in 5/4) carries this piece on beautifully.
Feel like it could have gone on side 2 of LOW by Bowie.
Great stuff from you two.
Thanks for the download
cheers

5/4
The horns were recorded independentaly of another. in other words I did not monitor the first track when recording the other. Each one is panned 33% Left and Right. One has the bitcrusher GB filter added giving it that trumpet-like throatiness to it. I used a seperate track echo and another for flanger. Not something that I do often but as I began to think of the exposed reactor core(s) at Japan, I began to want to create something raw, unseen and elemental.

I think the 5/4 is part of the propulsion effect
the measures seem to lope forward even though logic tells me they should feel behind. Andy's treatments are excellent - thanks for getting the goods on that.

Kevin
The sights that I've seen on television - the black water overrunning the island has me rocked to the core... yet still in the comfort of my living room. We who have never seen such a disaster are truly blessed. Thanks for the outlet. Again, this is nothing like we have done in the past.... what next, my friend?

I hear you - the devastation is just unthinkable. Water is such a wonder - seductive - destructive - powerful and flowing. I curse it when I can't keep it out of my basement. What am I thinking?

Looking forward to our next adventure - thanks for making this one so cool.

Very nice
I agree with the side 2 of low comment absolutely

the only thing im not sure about is a bit crunched type effect on the sax (unless my speakers have packed up and im hearing it wrong - brings an unecessary harshness to the overall sound i think - of course if thats what the intention is/was - its great!)

a very moody and evocative piece - fabulous stuff chaps

Unsettling
Guys this as an ominous quality, like the relentless and inevitable build unto tragedy. Maybe I'm getting that from the title. The sweeping horns and rumbling drum kit that gives way to that stuttering synth is wonderful. Feels like the intro theme to an intelligent sci fi epic. Bravo.

Bud
my apologies friend for not being as interactive on this collaboration as I have been for most of our past collaborations. Computer /slash / recording time is a rare thing these days and any moment where I have an hour or two I jump at the chance. I hope that this does not diminish the potential quality. I hear the bumps and flaws you are happy with it then I am. I was worried these last few weeks, thinking that I had overlooked someone but I can't seem to put a finger on who it could be.

No apologies necessary
if anything the spontaneity that arose from your approach and time constraints only served to enhance the power of the song and reflect the unpredictability of nature. I'm as happy as I have been with anything we've ever done together.

That 5/4 sounds interesting. This piece has a mellow feel to it but the 5/4 maintains tension.

Fukushima
LIke a war chant with a hint of modernity and and ominous overtone. Love the echo-plex adds on the sax. OK that's it, after hearing the description of how you put it together I have to get Chordbot. It "sounds" like a great tool. This could be a great transitional mood sequence when the lead character goes off the deep end and kills all his enemies in a orgy of blood. An alternate to the soundtrack in Apocalypse Now when Martin Sheen cuts his hand in the hotel room and smears blood all over his face. Um, I like it.
