Description
This 1902 song - although American - was very popular in Edwardian British Music Hall, and I had the opportunity to sing it in such a Music Hall revival some years ago in my local theatre.

This, however is a trad jazz version, and I've added some scat to modernise it further. For some reason I wasn't allowed to perform it like this in the Music Hall revival....

Most recordings only feature the chorus so we never know the background story as told in the verses. So I re-jigged the 2 verses into one and sang it - improvising a melody - over the 1st round of the chorus to give a bit of that missing story!

Backing track used with kind permission of Musical Creations.

Love the intro and verses. You're right, I'd never heard them before. Can hear the English music hall layered on top of Tin Pan Alley in your version. Lovely vocal performance.

Well done! Like your scat. Like hearing the verse for the first time(for me,anyway) It reminded me of my grandfather used to sing the verse to "Meet Me In St.Louis Louie" Great job.

really glad you brought this song to my attention..
really enjoyed it. And was pleased it wasnt about the comedian. :) Great scatting and perfect vocal (from the quality of it i presume that comes as standard!). I shall be digging through the crates to discover more treasures. Thank you!

Thanks Bill! :-)
Thanks for your nice words, but I can't take any credit for the instrumentals - that's a commercial music track I've got permission to use!
