Description
Lotsa monkeying around with the pitch on 4 tracks of bass and 4 tracks of vocals.

Just having fun tonight. It's been a while since I wrote, recorded and posted a tune in the same night, so for all those friends that miss my instant songs of days gone by, here's one more for the collection!

Lyrics
HERBERT THE HUMAN
IS A LOT LIKE ME
HE’S TWICE THE HUMAN
THAT I THOUGHT HE’D BE

HERBERT THE HUMAN
IS A LOT LIKE YOU

(HE DOES A LOT OF THINGS
THAT YOU DO TOO)

YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE YOU
YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE ME TOO (X2)

LEAD

YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE YOU
YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE ME TOO (X2)

HE DOESN’T KNOW
WHAT HE IS LOOKING FOR
HE’S NEVER REALLY HEARD
THE TRUTH BEFORE

HE’S ASKING QUESTIONS
HE’S SO CURIOUS

HE TRIES TO UNDERSTAND
HE SCRATCHES HIS HEAD
PROCESSES INFORMATION
HE’S BEEN FED

HE DOESN’T KNOW
IF THIS IS SERIOUS

YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE YOU
YEAH, HE’S A LOT LIKE ME TOO (X4)

Epic
and meditative.
A bit in the egobandit best experimental style, percs and all, isn't it ? The keyboard solo, though, "is a lot like you".

caldecott rock
dude, if there was a justin bieber look-a-like WOW boy band you'd be so much cooler than the cute one who gets the promise ring chicks.

love the yeah's and the up-pitch mechano-girl vocals. fun and like all of your best stuff, poignant (in a hip, indie kids book kind of way).

Indie kid's book kinda way? That's funny, and somehow deserving. How do you come up with this stuff?

Thanks!

Elvis maybe?
That artwork is just TOO much (you are a real talent in that line) as well as real talent in the music line too. Very vervy and strangely enticing work on here Bob--thanks again (I'm at work so could not act out while listening but I'll save it for when I get home!) Michael

Elvis Was A Human
He works right up the street from me at the Blue Suede Shoe Repair Shoppe.

Drawing is my first passion, thanks for the compliment. "Music" is the other thing I love to do, but other than 4 weeks of singing lessons, I have no one to blame but myself! LOL!

Thanks Michael - hope you don't get in trouble acting out at home.

I really like the sparseness of this one. The keyboard solo is really inspired. Love the break at 2:22. Hard to believe this is a one night wonder. Lots of variety, breaks, stuff I never can manage in a one-nighter. Cool drums and vibrato on the guitar (bass?). DL!

Vibrato
I forgot to mention this in the description - During the writing/recording (same thing for me) of this, I went back and forth between 60 and 120 bpm. I started out with a bass riff at 120 bpm. Well, I couldn't put a lead riff on it so I slowed it to 60 bpm and got that awesome vibrato on the first track. Daddy likey. I had some drum tracks that were effected too, but they didn't sound as cool so I replaced them when I decided that this sounded better at 60 bpm. Because of my experimental nature, I continued to go back and forth between 60 and 120 and ended up with a couple of cool vocal tracks that had a vibrato effect as well. Then I threw caution to the wind and cranked the pitch up 12 octaves on one of the bass tracks and up 4 and 6 and 10 on different vocal parts throughout the tune. I take advantage of the arrange feature in GB and that tambourine lead break at 2:22 gave it a breath it needed and a copy of the first section minus most of the percussion made an interesting break.

The synths - ahhh at 60 bpm I think I could've written a 10 minute solo, but I was thinking about contrast, besides it was 11:00 so I needed to come up with a drawing. That's usually my favorite part of the process - the drawing!

Thanks PVD! Didn't mean to write a novel!

One Sitter
It felt great to hammer one out in a night. I tend to leave the mistakes and build upon them rather than over think it and then go back and try to recover what I did in the beginning any way, only minus the authenticity of a wayward effort.

What does that mean?

Thanks bud! I know you understand!!

Hi Karen,

Don't forget that for this rock'n'roll dad, having up to a single night a week puts a lot of pressure on me to get things done! You should see me do the dishes!

Thanks for listening!

One night? It takes me forever just to decide on what to write about. And even then I'm usually relying on others to give me a clue.

This is just a fun listen! I like the tremolo effect on the bass and the cool drum grooves. I also like the open ended imagery of the lyrics. It's as if DEVO rewrote Nowhere Man!

Indecisive? You? Nawwww!
Ruby and I were talking about something last week and it sounded like she said "Herbert the Human" so I jotted it down on my Musical Ideas page on my iPhone notepad. Then a comic book artist pal of mine stopped by Thursday night and told me he was going to have a fake band in his next comic book and I insisted that he let me be the band and I immediately started throwing band names at him - Herbert the Human was one of them. Like everyone else in my life, he ignored me, so last night I said to myself, "Self, I'm going to write a song called 'Herbert The Human' ". The rest is MacJams history!

Thanks for the feedback on the lyrics. It could've gone a few directions and I was really happy to end up with something as open ended (as you pointed out).

Nowhere Man - I'm gonna add that to the list of musical ideas!

Thanks Andrew

Surprisingly cool for a dude with 5 extra arms (does that mean you actually have 7 arms? always wondered that). You're the second macjammer today whose vocal performance reminded me of Jane's Addiction. Your lyrics crack me up. This was fun to listen to - thanks!

Like traveling back in time to classic Tubeway Army. Instant song; instant classic. Great synth chops Bob. I've always adored your particular brand if Electronica and I can hear a little if Tim's influence here too. Some if the backing track feels a lot like an 80's Amiga 16 bit demo which I dig big time.

Love the Terence Trent D'Arby percussion that comes in and out. But more than that, I love the lyrics. It's incredible the puzzle you put together with monosyllables (using that word will get you paid and get you LAID). It's a punch in the face to people who think that depth requires words like "Monosyllables".
