Description
There's another incarnation of this song on my page. I wanted to be anthemic and have chiming guitar, so I redid the song, sang in a higher register, reworked some of the lyrics, etc, etc. I hope you like it!

Lyrics
Still Boat Burning

This dirt, it’s mocked you raw for years –
You’d goad the ocean to cry you your tears

Take these matchstick towers and burn them down
I’m on my way, I’ll run the river down

Drive the stillness down

Take this foundering boat and will it home:
Toss the sails to sea, they’re overthrown

Take these listless hands and set them free –
Knit a gown of fog upon the sea

That old beast, he knows ‘bout hungry ghosts,
Yeah, it’s a hollow dawn you mourn by rote

Take this reeling myth and make it breathe –
These fingerprints scatter like dead leaves

Drive the stillness down

Set this snarling wind a face of stone,
Legs for it to run, and moonlit bones

Still the ceaseless hymn that crowns your blood,
Lay your dead to rest in the river mud

Dip these sordid grins in something light,
History, they say, is watertight

Why don’t you be dry ice into air –
I’ll write to psalms that nestle in your hair

Drive the stillness down

hey ben....great to see another post from you. didn't go for the synth opening and your voice seemed detached from it....but then the rest kicked in and what a great riff! very catchy and as usual excellent lyrics. your voice is much more 'on it' with this one....are you trying harder?
love the feel of it....felt a little cheated by it being a repeated theme. it does hold attention however because it's catchy.

i'd say
that I did put in more effort than usual on these vocals...a side effect of my goal to completely re-imagine the original song. Thanks for the feedback!

I love the lyrics. There's a mid-60s John Lennon quality to them (I am the Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever). They're open ended and can mean different things to different people. I think this is the strongest melody I've heard from you. It will be stuck in my head. Vocally you're sounding strong here as well. I like the way you open up on "Drive the stillness down." Lyrics this good deserve to be sung that clearly! The double tracked sections are very good. They're particularly locked in with the techno drum loop (I love that loop) and the very cool guitar figure! Very well done!

Hmmm
I missed the earlier one (I think I did anyway). Like Julian, I didn't enjoy the opening much, but the rest sounded good. Your vocals in particular sounded really good - the register change really works.
A little repetitive instrumentally - maybe you could expand the instrumentation a little?
Nice mix.
Cheers,
Neil

thanks
for stopping by. I've been trying to dream up some synth bridges to change things up a little bit, but nothing seems to be working quite well enough. Cheers!

has a tim booth quality
i dig it. evocative lyrics. i like the moonlight bones line - also the 'old beast' line. i would definitely expand the instruments - add a bit here, drop out there, mix it up a bit. cool tune.

Quality lyrics
Hi Ben. Really like the lyrics in this one. The vocal treatment is very good as well. Lots to like. The instrumentation could use some variation, as others have suggested, but it is a good song. Regards, Peter.

Ben
It's been a while since I've heard you perform and it's a pleasure to tell you that your singing here is far superior than your earlier work....keep doing what you are doing. I liked this very much--a well styled contemporary song; as always your lyrics are seamless and thoughtful. I suppose the only critical advice I could find to give here is that your guitar accompaniment maybe be playing that same riff under your vocal a bit too many times (then again, maybe it's working, but I'm wondering if a slight variation would give this a more interesting touch). In any event, this was very good and glad I could listen. Take care now, Michael

hey there ben! your vocals have improved immensely - i think that higher register really agrees works well for you. you've gotten some good feedback about the opening synth and the repetition in the song - and i agree about that stuff. i'd add that the ending feels a bit abrupt and seems kind of disconnected from the song. but frankly, your vocals shine right through those easily adjusted aspects, and as always your lyrics are just short of astounding. nice to hear from you.

Strong imagery in the lyric. I agree with the others that the synth intro didn't live up to the rest of the song. However the groove is catchy once it gets going. Your vocals are getting better.

complex
rhythm once the drums etc kick in. Like other people, I wasn't convinced by the synth opening - I think it's the little skippy bit I didn't like, but once the rest starts up it's great. Sounds like the Stone Roses. Cool.

I always look forward to your stuff Ben as it demands attention and challenges the listener. When this kicks in, I sat up and listened harder, although the intro was a nice touch I'm glad the change took place and you seem to have a good ear for keeping people interested. Your vocals in the higher register really carry and I think you ought to consider doing that more. I know lyrics carry a lot of weight with you and it's nice just to read through this on it's own merit and this is no exception - awesome words well structured and considered. One of your best.

I think
Your vocal work is getting better with time. I would do a LOT more vocal doubling like you did here in the future. Best part of this song comes at 1:48 to the end. Your vocal is locked into the groove of the song and the double of vocal adds beef to it.

your next step should be to mix the backing music up some more. It is hard to vary what you do vocally when the music stays on the same thing. That is what I would recommend next.

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
