Black Lace

Description
I got a Royer 121 ribbon mic for recording my guitar cabs. It has made a really nice difference in the quality of my guitar signal. The setup is pictured above. I played the guitar part with my strat because sometimes a leaner signal is necessary for a meaner sound. Plus the single wrapped coils allow the bass to stand out better.

There was a girl I knew who never wore black lace but she did like stilettos. She probably thinks this song is about her… Maybe part of it is.

Lyrics
Black Lace

Black lace stockings
Stiletto heels
Eyes from heaven
Temptress from hell
Black lace
Black lace

She draws me in
Then pushes away
She’ll kick me out
Then let me stay
She’s more than I want
She’s more than I need
Such high maintenance
So full of greed

(chorus)
Does she want me?
Does she need me?
Does she love me?
Does she even care?
Does she want me?
Does she need me?
Does she love me?
Does she even care?

Black lace stockings
Stiletto heals
She knocks me out
She’s so unreal
Black lace
Black lace

She might want me
But will never show
She might have me
But I’ll never know
She’s too high class
For a guy like me
She’s too up scale
For my scene

(chorus)

Black lace Stockings
Stiletto heals
She is so uncaring
Of how I feel
Black lace
Black lace

My friends tell me
Leave this alone
But I have to try
To get her home
To feel black lace
Against my skin
To know how good
It is to sin

(Chorus)

Awesome hard rock. I love the power chords after the chorus (around 1:10). Killer solo. This reminds me of some of the early Alice Cooper stuff!

Thanks Scott
The guitar signal was a bit too warm using a tube condenser mic on the guitar cab. Now it's nice and crunchy.

Thanks for having a listen!

Classic...
Classic hard rock, in both sentiment and substance. Guitar, bass and drums are all rockin'. Way heavy. Regards, Peter.

Thank you Peter
for having a listen.

I'm glad the guitars sound heavy. Strats aren't easy to get a nice heavy sound out of. Usually they are bluesy and lean sounding.

The strat definitely has a unique sound. I think it works here pretty well.

My next solo song will be using my ancient Hamer. That thing is all out metal sounding.

Super cool
I was wanting to do some experimenting myself. My Mesa has a line out. I wonder if it would sound similar to mic'ing by running directly in and then image the track. The guitar sounds good and I like the full throttle crunch your getting. There's a good article on this months Premier Guitar magazine about mic'ing amps using two mic's. Thoroughly Enjoyed!

finkeldink said 2309 days ago (April 27th, 2011)
Interesting
I hope I get to hear that experiment. Let me know how it works out.

I might pick up a Sure SM57 to mic along side the Royer. The SM57 will pick up some of the highs that the Royer loses. The nice thing is that 57's are dirt cheap compared to the Royer. The bad thing is that I'll need one more pre. It never ends.

for having a listen and for the comments. I'm going to have to give the new mic a shot with one of my guitars with humbuckers to see how that works out. I may need some different mic placement for that.

Black Lace & ribbons
how odd...... i was just thinking last week about if purchasing a ribbon mike would be worth it. have you tried it with vocals yet? does seem to have a warm sound on the guitars.

finkeldink said 2309 days ago (April 27th, 2011)
Thanks
Vic for having a listen.

I may try using the mic for vocals on my next song. We'll see how that goes. The Royer I have read is really good for vocalists with some sibilance issues so it may not be the best vocal mic for me. However it is always good to have some options.

finkeldink said 2309 days ago (April 27th, 2011)
oh yeah
I'm still not sure with my limited experience with the mic if it was worth the price or not. I guess time and experience will tell.

That's one kickin song there man!..I could tell from the opening riff, that it was going to be good.I've always heard that a big part of tone comes from the hands,,,and man you got it goin on!

This is true. Most of the tone that I find is really dependent on how well the fretting hand hits the sweet spot of the fret and for me a lot of it comes from my picking techniques. Some of my songs require several sessions because my picking hand gets tired first.

I'll have to check out your new one when I get home.

Powerhouse #323...
....Yanno Mike, the thing that truly intrigues me is: How do you that with your voice? Wowee--and the thing is, I understand every single word (lots of times with this genre, I don't know WHAT the fook they are singing, and this is something very important to me when listening to a vocal). This was polished and professional as can be--I loved the work in the minor key most of all--really added a new dimension to this. Thanks again, and keep them coming Finkelton! Michael

Ah I love that Strat sound. Excellent solo - very cool. I dig this stuff Mike - reminds me of just a few years back (ok more than a few) when I was learning to play myself - this is the type of stuff I'd spend hours and hours learning. Loved it - thanks!
