Description
This is about getting off my backside and writing something new, although you're unlikely to pick that up from the lyrics :) I watched "I'm Not There" (the Dylan film) again the other night, and soon realised there were great lyric lines coming at me from everywhere. At this point I grabbed a pen and started writing them down for future reference.

The next day I found the incredibly complex chord sequence (yes folks, there are TWO chords in the whole song, and they are separated by one semitone on one string), and the verses fell together without much thought at all. I then realised that I was writing about aspects of my life over the last few years. It all makes sense to me, although I doubt it will to anyone else. What I like most about the words though is the way they sound, and I guess that's what I like most about Dylan's words too - "the ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face" is still one of my favourite song lines ever.

Musically, it's just me - acoustic and electric guitars, bass, midi drums (the basic loops were played in on my keyboard and then modified throughout the song with my trusty midi pencil) and midi percs.

Lyrics
Life On The Trapeze
©2011 Neil Porter

I don’t do no competition
And I don’t do “how you bin?”
But I’m watching as you tally up my score
Well I feel like some outrider
Like some satellite provider
It’s gonna take a resurrection
To get me off the floor
Off the floor
Off the floor
Off the floor
Off the floor

I got strange face in the mirror
I got honey in my comb
I don’t think I’ll get to heaven
I don’t want to die alone
Well you know that sleep’s for dreamers
And you know how dreams are real
You say I have to sing with feeling
But I don’t know what to feel
What to feel
What to feel
What to feel
What to feel

Chaos never bothered me
And I never bothered him
When I get him in my headlights
I lock him in
You can take away my meaning
You can nail me to the floor
I’m wary of enthusiasm
But I cross the street for love
Street for love
Street for love
Street for love
Street for love

As I get myself together
As I warm up to the cure
I feel like some imposter
That’s for sure
I have no recollection
Of my life on the trapeze
You’re gonna need a rhythm section
If you want to shake my tree
Shake my tree
Shake my tree
Shake my tree
Shake my tree

So cool
What I dig here is the cool cool grove.
And within the coolness there is heat.
Just waiting to burst out,
but probably it wont. Probably it will stay back,
as a hidden motor of within.
Continuing the inexhaustible drive,
that your music carry within.

Hi Johannes, good to see you drop by for a listen (and read your comment). The groove was the core of the song - the drums took the most time to do (and I'm still not sure I got them how I wanted them). When I listen again to this, I can hear aspects of the rhythms I used in my earlier songs - big percussion sections keeping everything moving. I'm really pleased you enjoyed it.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

There you go again Neil
showing us how it's done. For Midi drums, these are some of the best I've hear in a long time. You Guitar and Bass come through the mix and shine on this one. I'd say you've got a hit on you hand with this one my friend. sounds good to me anyway and I love it.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I so wish I could play real drums though - maybe if I win the lottery I might buy an e-kit.

Working Without a Net...
... On The Internet?

Well, Neil, high-flying on a trapeze is still better than swinging at the end of your rope, isn't it? ;)

Cool jam piece here and the stream-of-consciousness lyrics work well within that structure. A nice start to the beginning of your 7th year at MacJams.

Nicely done. ;)

Enjoyably Dylanish. Fun groove and lyric. "wary of enthusiasm but I cross the street for love" is a cool line. Tasty guitar work. Congrats on getting back on the songwriting horse, Neil.

Classic Neil!
And it doesn't get any better. Almost seems like a "back to basics" kind of tune, definitely in the sound, but also in the lyrics. Reflective and aware of where you've been and where you're going.

Always worth any wait to hear a new tune from you.

2 chord wonder
..... works really well. so well i don't think i would of caught that if you hadn't mentioned it. the drums/percussion is great and maybe that's what expands on the sonics and groove of the tune, making it feel like more then just two chords

and the lyrics really "shake my tree" i really like them

Deserving...
Hi Neil. Your fantastic midi drums are driving a quality groove here. The minimalist guitar work puts the highlight on the lyrics and vocals - and they deserve it. Shades of latter Dylan definitely, but with far better vocals :-) The mix/master is up there with the best MJ can offer (as always). Welcome back. Kind regards, Peter.

Nice and
easy feel to this Neil and it has lots of 'space' which gives a sense of freshness.... love the way you did the instrumentals. Good lyrics as always, which can always be a stumbling block when writing (I have a couple of songs and as yet no lyrics).... enjoyed this with it's optimistic summery feel, cheers M

Jiggy is back!
Neil, this is another example of great music without big attitude. I like the lyrics a lot, the music is very well played but what I like the most is the tone of the soloing guitar at 3.03.!!! :o) That is art --> playing a "wrong" tone without BEEING wrong. Thanks for sharing music!! -Iggy-

Truth within the surreal
I had this image of someone laying on the floor, a shadow of the trapeze artist fallen across him. I dug the whole funky shuffle groove, the space you leave for thought.

I loved I'm Not There, how it uses the surreal journey for getting at a deep truth, like Dylan lyrics. He's one of a kind, man. The guy astounds even after a thousand revisits. We should do a Dylan challenge, try to write something he might nod his head to...

Love your journey too.

I like the rhythm guitar....
...and the way that this whole cool song grows up around this two chord groove...

By the way, that line from 'Visions of Johanna' is one of my favorite lines, too...

Neat accents on the drums...I really have to learn to program MIDI drums one of these days....

I can really imagine the dancers in the soon-to-be-released video of this tune...

You have the ability to add just the right touch to the right places, Neil - of course starting with lyrics that have something to say as you do and keep the listening wanting to know where you're going is a big help. As always, the musicianship stands out. Thanks for sharing it!
