Description
A Folk-Rock tune based on a seafaring experience of mine in June of 2001; a very big, middle of the night storm about 75 miles off the Georgia coast sailing north on my 1968 sloop. The two sailors aboard were myself and Randy Hoefling, who was the way more experienced sailor and thankfully at the helm through much of the storm. Thanks Randy!

Why the song title "Last Sail"? We were sailing the boat up from Florida to its new owner in New York.

And much thanks and many kudos to Vic for his blistering guitar work, Neil for mixing help and solid bass, Mike for his cool keyboards, Richard for his essential sonorous vocal harmonies, and Mike Dancy for some great drums. As well as additional vocals by Mike and Vic.

Remixed 2011 of the original submitted in 2007

Lead Vocals/acoustic guitar: Jack Miller
Organ/vocals: Mike Wark
Electric guitar/vocals: Vic Holman
Vocal harmonies: Richard Schletty
Drums: Mike Dancy
Bass: Neil Porter

Last Sail
Lyrics and Music by Jack Miller 2007

Southern sunset, darkness was falling
And the waves laid gently down
Crew and boat were ready for that cruise
For the, the wind, and God's will. 2x

The tide was ebbing as we wet wail
Our heading would be true
Gliding on the sea once again
Into the breeze, into the blue. 2x

At the helm, two bells past midnight
On my watch that demon rose
Hell and wind and salt and foam
Beat the sloop Tir na nOg. 2x

Chorus: Never felt so hopeless that night
Battling storm, exhaustion, and fright
Never so thankful to have my life
And to be sailing calm seas once again. (repeat line on last chorus)

Mountains of ocean, steady as she goes
We held that tiller tight
Fixed on the compass to the north
Into the storm, into the night. 2x

Twenty-five feet, well the seas they crashed
And the wind galed fifty more
Hard and fast we cut through that blow
But would it cease? Was this the final score? 2x

Chorus

Instrumental

Well the angry seas, they subsided
As the dark gave way to dawn
Too tired to sleep that misty morn
And my mate at the tiller sailed on. 2x

Chorus.... (repeat last line)

You said it...

Vic is amazing in what he can do on his guitars. I think he is in a class of his own with the creative approach he has combined with his execution.... that always results in something well worth listening to. He worked hard on this one... many thanks again, Vic.

And thank you, Bob.

Look what blew in!
Excellent work, but then, look at the crew... Great story-telling folk tune here Jack, enjoyed the music and lyrics. Sounds like a harrowing trip.

Great guitar work, drums, perfect organ touches, the bass is solid and holds 'er steady, loved the singing and low-harmony spots were great too. Super mix, very smooth.

Drakonis

Excellent song! I dig the storytelling. Strong vocals and excellent performances by the all-star band. The boat is about 40 ft? Did you go through the storm under sail or under power? Was the weather forecast wrong?

Dadai.2 said 2330 days ago (May 8th, 2011)
Het Dave...
The boat is a Cheoy Lee Robb 35. 35.5 feet. We went through the storm under power (Yanmar diesel 35 HP). We were heading north from West Palm Beach, FL, second night when an early summer storm came from the north. We had warning via the marine radio... It beat the crap out of us for about 3 hours; the Gulf Stream waves stacked up, one after the other. Needless to say. I wouldn't want to go through that again.

Thanks for listening and asking about the cruise. Do you sail?

Hi Jack, Yeah, My brother and I have a MacGregor 26 motor-sailer, outfitted with a 50 hp Honda outboard. We keep in in Annapolis, MD.
It has a water ballast and a centerboard rather then a traditional keel, not designed as an ocean-going vessel. We just putter around the bay with it. I did get caught in a thunderstorm once, visibility was about 5 ft - but not as scary as your story. I guess if you had hugged the coastline your trip would have taken a lot longer.

This is one of the
high quality, pro works. I am amazed by hearing such great results, although each band member works from distance. This is such a great song and you all seem to work in harmony, in every sense of the word.

I'm in awe.
