Guess the Mike

Description
The recording is made to test this new mike Iv'e got.

I wonder if any of you can guess what type of mike this is. The type, not the brand. The brand is very small, actually the mike is designed by a one-man-project here in Sweden and I'd be flabbergasted if you'd ever heard of it, (even thouth he's got customers in Nashville). But the type is not uncommon at all.

If you'd also give your opinion of it, that would be interesting and welcome.

Towards the end of the recording I tried to play with more dynamic variation just for the test.

The guitar is a Furch D24 acoustic dreadnought with Elixir strings.

The photo is from last sunday (good weather has come to my homeland!).

Listening
In a crappy works hotel in Manchester UK so the lap top speakers dont give me much to go on. Sounds as clear as it can on this machine. A nice "noodle round the Mull". Much enjoyed

Cool arrangement of an old classic. No idea what mic you're using but it's got a nice warm quality to it.

...
Well, I only know 3 mics. dynamic and condenser are not so odd, so I guess ribbon? Sounds nice tho.

It is not a ribbon mike, in fact I see that as a great compliment of this mike because to me ribbon mikes are the very best choice for recording acoustic guitar. Thank you elevator. (Btw: it is not the mike type that is odd, but the brand).

Great arrangement! Wonderful phrasing. I like the bends and percussive strums. Great recorded tone!

Amazing Grace
I enjoy the closeness of the sound. Mic picks up most frequencies well and captures most details and dynamics well. Consider playing with EQ on your end to see how much raw data is there in tape to manipulate, that might help you understand which frequencies are available.

That aside, the casual and quiet joy of the performance is a delight. Thanks for sharing this. Very nice interpretation of one of the best tunes ever passed down.

Amazing Grace
Gorgeous rendition with a lot of heart and soul. The recording is lovely and I am amazed at the lack of string squeak. Can't guess the mic, but it don't matter, the result was achieved. It's a keeper.

Amazing Grace is such an epic piece and to tackle it so well is credit to you. Well played man..... not a clue on the Mike!!!

Sweet sound
Sweet sound with good dynamics. My guess is it has to be a condenser mic. I haven't heard a dynamic mic that can really capture the nuances of an acoustic. Well played! D/L! Regards, Peter.

great old tune...
great guitar... and great "old" guitar player!
LOL.

Good to hear your playing, Cury.

Jack

-- no idea on the mic.

Absolutely ...
... no idea Johannes, but it's nice to hear you play :) For what it's worth, I don't think this recording has the usual liveliness you get from your "old" set up.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

That's
quite on the spot .. it can't get usual liveliness. For one thing I've always recorded stereo before, this is mono. And another thing has to do with the mike type (that was a little clue).

Okay, then...
I finally start catching up on my MacJams listening, as best I can...

The tone from this is drier, less resonant, than when you've used things like those ribbon mics in the past, or even the...was it a Zoom recorder?...

So...mic type and not brand...

Is it a PZM? I used to use one of those in grad school for recording therapy sessions, and it was very even and dry, kind of like this...

Or is it just a dynamic mic, and you're teasing us? Or a stereo mic?
Cori Ander said 2280 days ago (May 26th, 2011)
Good to hear from you
It is not a PZM, actually I didn't know before what it is, had to wikipedia it. Really nice to hear from you Ed!

You Have...
amazing grace on the fretboard, Johannes. A lovely touch, to be sure. The sound of the microphone reminds me of a membrane mic an old acquaintance experimented with many years ago. It proved too delicate to be practical, but perhaps someone has found a way to make it more durable?
