Description
I was looking at an instructional video on Logic on my laptop yesterday while waiting for my car to be serviced (doesn't everyone?). I have been wanting to learn more of the capabilities of Logic and so thought it was a good time to look at some of the videos. As the instructor went through the topics (like sidechaining) I thought I would try them out for myself right then and there. Since I didn't have a keyboard I decided to use the loops at hand, not planning that this exercise would turn into anything. Eventually the monitoring/morphing/mixing and mayhem ended up building this little piece which I thought I would publish, just to get something up on the net after so long.

After the Celtic collab with Char, I'm back into fusion mode, and thought I would audibly mess with some world chants (or create some chants by slicing otherwise normal vocals) over a slow beat and simple instrumentation. I have been listening to a lot of Deep Forest lately, and although this isn't their style, I like the way they weave vocal samples into their work. In any case, this wasn't so much of a planned composition as it was a way to test out additional Logic effects and tools to the ones I was familiar with.

Also, thanks to all those who have sent notes concerned about my welfare since I haven't posted much or been commenting regularly this year. Your thoughts are appreciated, and I have been fine - just doing other things. I have at least 3 other pieces on the go at the moment on the Mac Pro, but this one, the most recent, I decided to put a wrap on first. Now on to the next piece....

Enjoy,
Doug

nice job
I like the groove and idea. You can also master in Logic too.

Thanks Peter
Just came from your pages and love your work. I hope to be back to mine some more soon.

I was getting lazy by the time I came to master and knew that I could load GB faster than Logic, and since I was only going to use Ozone as the mastering plug I thought I'd get right to it with a single track in GB. I presume the results would be the same either way.

In any event, thanks for your supportive thoughts and tip!

Be well,
Doug

crystal clear
Love the space you have here... some fun effects slurring the speech early on too... but mostly I am impressed by the mix, which is rich and full, but still has lots of room for subtle reverb. But your little ploy has not worked, I am still able to avoid running madly over to the Apple store to buy Logic... I promised my piggy bank it was safe until Lion came out, and the upcoming Final Cut, sigh. :-)

Monsieur le Dragon
Drats, you dastardly Draconiforme, you have devilishly deduced and dumped my duplicitous deception and daringly diverted dollars to definitively different directions.

Glad you like the mix too. LP is pretty cool, but Final Cut is likely cooler given all the video tweaking you can do. :)

Cheers,
Doug

What a great
way to use your wait time at the dealership. It sounds Middle Eastern or African. And it makes you want to dance. I think you have a hit. Thanks, Doug.

Hi Char,
It's a good thing I didn't get far enough in the composition to dance around the dealership.

Actually I think that the beat is a bit slow for dancing anyway - but it was cool to try out using compressors for generating the pumping action that comes with this style of music.

Nice to hear from you!

Though
some have called me loopy but I'm not a looper myself. After listening to this I'm starting to wonder why not?

Of course I love the rhythmic chants you used (I have a soft spot for a good middle eastern riff) but what knocked my socks off was the quality of the mix.

If you're this good with logic I think you should be knocking out some training videos yourself so the next time I get my car worked on I won't go stir crazy and might actually learn something.
Cheers,
Charlie

To loop, or not to loop
And the question is kind of binary when the answer can be anything in the spectrum of some or all or no loops. I have found though that I don't use loops on many pieces that I compose 'from scratch', since a lot of those pieces use a rubato timing that doesn't play nicely with loops - at least without monkeying with the timing. Still, it's great fun playing the arranger and seeing what can be put forth from other people's slices of creativity.

If I ever do get into the Logic instructional videos I'll be sure to call on you first my friend since I can use a lot of help in the video production side, and you are a master there for sure.

Thanks for the kind words Charlie,
Take care,
Doug

Surprised!!!
This is SO different, Doug, from everything else I have heard of yours. (certainly FAR from Tuscany!). What a great beat you set up...and then you expand with all sorts of interesting rhythms. The overall effect is pretty haunting. Boy, and I just waste my time reading novels while I wait for my car! I gotta get more productive. ... This is so cool.

Far from Tuscan Morning indeed
I didn't expect this to develop into anything other than bits and bobs of a study about ring shifters and compression, but it was fun to put a quick finish to even if it wasn't a 'serious' composition. BTW, I have a piece coming along that I hope you will like (and others too), which I'm spending more time on to get it right. It is a slow ballet movement.

Thanks for dropping by with such a kind perspective Paul.

Be well,
Doug

Fringey to some
Loopy for sure. It's fun to just play with arranging from time to time, and although this doesn't push many borders it is refreshing to take a new direction from other trodden paths. Glad you like it!

Hi Doug.....
It's good to see you back and you've given everyone a treat with this mix.

Loops are great when used in this way. You've made the mix sound almost loopless. Power to you.

I look forward to your other three pieces (at least).

Take care.

Loopless
One lesson I just learnt here is that I mixed this with earbuds since I was on the road. I can hear a lot of muddiness that could be cleared up had I used my monitors at home.

Still, the learning's the thing! Glad you enjoyed it Paul.

Many thanks, and until the next tune...

Back!
Good to hear from you. Glad to hear everything is OK and that you're brewing up some new concoctions. This was unexpected, but no doubt a fun exercise for you. Also fun for us listeners. Superb sound quality, as if that doesn't go without saying. I was hoping the dancing girl in the pic would start swaying in rhythm. I'm sure she wanted to. I did too, but it wouldn't have been quite as appealing, I'm afraid.

I hope you're a quicker study than I if you go the Logic route. It's quite daunting to me to pick up all of the plugins and what they can do individually, let alone in concert with each other.

Maybe in 20 years I'll have learned this release of the software.

Thanks Laura
I haven't dashed off something this fast (36 hours) since I joined MacJams. I really wanted to test out pumping and some other morphing effects and so wasn't overly concerned with how the whole thing came together.

Glad you liked it though - a different style from your lovely ballad.

Thanks,
Doug

Hi Andrew
Thanks for your very kind words. I'm continually amazed that people say the mix in this is good, since I really paid little attention to it other than to achieve some pumping and a little ambience here and there. Still, maybe it indicates that some of the choices I'm making quickly along the way (EQ for instance) are working. Ozone is a big help here too I will admit.

For something I started with no intention to finish I appreciate your supportive feedback!

All the best,
Doug

It's like a writing exercise for school ...
I guess that there is something that is percolating into my gray matter about how to produce. I don't know about you but I find that I seem to forget about a third of what I learn in how all of these musical tools and samples work. Still, it's fun. And I kind of quickly threw this tune together just to exercise what I was learning in Logic. The last piece I worked on took me months. This time it was a day and a half here and there.

I wonder sometimes if I should get a 25 key controller to bring around with my laptop so I don't just rely on loops when I'm out of the studio. Maybe in next year's budget....

Thanks for being so supportive. It's good to hear from you.

Cheers,
Doug

Doug Somers said 2192 days ago (May 25th, 2011)
Hello Shay!!
I think that your comments are inspiring me to do a remix of this. It was thrown together so fast just to test out a few mixing and beat features of Logic that there wasn't much thought about how it could go with a bit more consideration of artistic intent. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad you like it and really appreciate the comments, which is what makes me think that the promise is there in what has been laid down to create something even more interesting.

So maybe this will be my 4th piece on the drawing board and I will give it another go with some live non-loop bits and more careful development.

And if you liked the echoey wahy bass/beat thingy, just wait to see what else I can pull out of my hat! And if I do remix this more carefully, if it seems to go better I will make it longer at your request.

Cheers, and thanks for such a warm reception!

Cool
Thanks for sharing this "test" piece coming out so nicely in the end. Really like it a lot and I wouldn't have thought of it as a loop song at all. Great sound/mix which shows you actually can learn something from those videos (I sure could use some of that ;-) BTW I listened to a bit of Deep Forest last week, quite nice, and my next piece also has a Middle-Eastern/African kind of style. Still has a bit of tweaking to do before posting though... Looking forward to more from you too.
