Description
I had this funk groove instrumental

Downtown Drivin

SammyDix grabbed it and auditioned some vocals. I loved it even though I thought it needed to be arranged. So he sent me his vocals alone, and this is what I came up with. I love Sam's attitude on this. What a character! We will be putting out a shorter radio friendly arrangement too, but I like the groove so much I did this extended mix too.

ALSO..... Sam and I decided to open this up to anyone who wants to do a remix. The BPM is 112. You have the link to the original above. And here is Sam's vocals:

Vocals Alone

If you post a remix, post a comment here with a link so we see it.

Lyrics
ain't got no time
to waste no time
got my best cologne on
enough to blow your mind

just to set the record
gonna tie one on
just know that that's reality
just know that that's reality

brand new polish on my car
just enough to impress all the babes
--won't let it go to my head--
gonna hit the nightclubs
like a special holiday
holiday...do it...

sax

don't put ideas into my head
i'm really bad enough
so don't make me get rough
i got to party from my hea-r-art

livin from dusk till Sunday
(downtown drivin it up)
havin myself a time
(downtown drivin it up)
wanna check out my chops
(downtown drivin it up)
zibby dooby bip bop zip zay
(downtown drivin it up)
did you hear what i say?
(downtown drivin it up)

Talked to Fred and he said:
"chil' you betta rest yo mind"

hey hey hey
come and check my ride
makin all the rounds
get in on the other side
better saddle up
cause i can't go slow
if you ain't up to speed
well, then you gotta go

so i say "hoo"
i say "hoo"
(downtown drivin it up)
i say "hoo"
livin in a Shytown shanty
(downtown drivin it up)
people in central park
(downtown drivin it up)
islands out in the bay
(downtown drivin it up)
over in monterey
so i say "hoo"
i say "hoo"

zibby dooby bip bop zip zay
(downtown drivin it up)
did you hear what i say?
(downtown drivin it up)

sax

Dude
didn't know you were gonna post them naked vocals. But that's ok, the one or two folk that might actually listen will finally hear me w/o my craziness involved.
DTD out fine in it's new form and sounds soooo good, tho a bit long. oh, but you did say "extended mix." Great job. what's next?

That's what I got permission for Sam.
Remember I asked about this? They need access to both parts I used in my arrangement (music and vocals), if they are gonna be able to make their own. SHould be fun and interesting.

Wow!! Great stuff here for sure! Love that drum sound, the groove, the vocal, the lyrics. This has got it all. It might not be there but I hear a little of that old New Awlin's Meters/Neville Brothers sound. Which to me is a very good thing!

zibby dooby bip bop zip zay!
Totally fun groove. Vocals are, indeed, full of hipness and attitude. The sax could be slightly louder, in my ears, and EQd to have more of a high end end like the vocals and snare have. The horn section is too soft for me, too. I'd prefer the live feel of when the horn section points at me and really blows. Again, maybe EQ to brighten it, altho it is totally mellow and real EQ now. In old funk tracks, the repeating funk guitar isn't usually so loud, and usually has a few variations to differentiate it from a sample, which might be less of an issue in the short version, but the build into the horn cacophony near the end would be a shame to cut! Really fun track.

If I can ever find the master project I'll look into the feedback. Haven't been able to find it. I actually cut up the mp3 of the instrumental and did this arrangement.

Funkay.

Who did the horns? It's great how they play off the vocal melodies.

You guys pulled this off nicely. It was in a bit of danger of becoming too repetitive because of the bass line, but you've got all those other elements weaving in and out so it keeps it interesting and it doesn't get dull.

I'd say if you're going to create a cut down version, try to keep a lot of what was going on at the end and incorporate it throughout earlier parts of the song if possible.

Nice one.

Nice combo....
Hey Sam and Freddy, nice combo! Sam's lyrics and vocals work in really well with the extended funk groove. I like the horn arrangement too. The funk guitar loop does become a little repetitive but this should iron itself out in the shorter version. Well done. Kudos to both of you, Peter.

Yes, those are real drums. Me playing. The sound has everything to do with how you hold your mouth while playing (well more the faces you make). Try it. It'll help your sound, no kidding...
