Deep Within

Description
After my last rather gloomy song, i thought i'd better find something slightly more cheery! There is still a lot of darkness in this piece, but an affirmative light shines through it.

This song i wrote in my pre-GB/Mac days, but i think it still comes over pretty well. The verses are couched in a purposely rather dissonant setting to emphasise the discomfort of the experience they describe, though perhaps i overdid it somewhat, listening to it again!

See what you think.

Cheers now

Lyrics
Deep Within

Deep within, and far away,
From the passing world today,
The flame of love eternal lights my way,

And when chaos pains,
My passive heart,
And sense is left behind,
When mad desiring strives,
To break my mind,

Deep within...

And when darkness seems
a waking dream,
And terrors haunt the sun,
And daylight is a nightmare,
just begun,

Deep within....

Though ever i betray the light,
And into evil fall,
And seem to flee and fail
beyond recall,

Deep within....

And when i view the onward road,
And see the terrors there,
And fear the pain my poor heart,
Cannot bear,

Deep within...

Hello Mr. Rattue
I like this music of yours, it reminds me of a song my mother used to sing to me, it is very good. (Farhang)

Judging
by your profile pic, i wouldn't argue with you! ;-)

Glad that you liked it. There is a sort of lullaby quality to it, now that you mention it, isn't there?

Cheers for listening

I hear the
dissonance. You are so good at playing and singing that to do that on purpose has to be difficult and took great control. There were some singers who were able to sing off key, for effect and it was meant to be funny. I think it would appeal more without it. You have such an endearing quality in all you do. I hate for something to distract from that. Thank you.

Hi Char!
Thanks so much for listening and your honest appraisal!

There is an argument both ways for dissonance, i suppose, and the comments so far seem to reflect both points of view. It is rather a stark contrast that either works or it doesn't, perhaps. The harmonic arrangement is complex and tense, and resolves only in the sweetness of the chorus, which does reflect the subject of the song, but i know what you mean about it possibly being a bit of a turn off, too.

i am very glad to hear you say that most of my stuff has an endearing quality!

Thank you so much for listening and leaving your comments!

Take care now

I once
knew a fantastic pianist, who used to purposely play off key bum chords whenever the audience began talking..... it always grabbed their attention and the chatting stopped.... then normal service resumed. I understand what you were trying to get across here, but for me it spoiled a lovely performance, because I do enjoy your voice and harmonies as well as your guitar playing, but as you said, you did 'over do' it a bit, regards M

Thank you!
Great to hear your comments. i don't think i have posted a song that split the audience like this one! It really is interesting to hear how the difficult passages either added or detracted from the listening experience.

Thanks for giving it a go!

Nice
I like the Dissonant chord/finger picking.

I love it when an artist pushes outside the boundries of what is considered "normal" and "safe" whether it be their image, lyrically, or in your case instrumentally. It's what moves this fluid machine that we call music forward.

Unlike yourself and Moviz I would argue that you didn't over do it at all, In fact its tame to my ears, but tame in a good way. Then again I listen to some really "out there" music so I'm sure i'm not exactly the demographic you are neccessarly shooting for.

Regardless this is really beautiful and well done. Kudos for such great music.

Wow, thanks!
i suppose i wrote the song as it felt at the time, and wanted to project something of the pain and negativity of the bad stuff, in order that the affirmative chorus would shine out of it with a brilliance and loveliness that was again faithful to the reality.

i didn't really have an audience in mind, just wanted to say what was in my heart to say, as sincerely and as simply as i could.

It is really encouraging that you found it effective and not at all off-putting.

Thanks for listening,

Cheers now

Lightening up
Glad these last two have hit the spot for you!

Really have no idea how people will react to these rather personal songs, but i suppose the themes are pretty universal.

Interesting that you don't see the dissonant passages as a negative. The jury is pretty much 'hung' as they say, i think, on that issue.

Cheers for listening

Just fine
Hi Marc. The dissonance doesn't put me off. I think it adds interest and contrasts the nice harmonies in the chorus. I've been listening to chopped loops and backwards guitar this morning and your honest, natural vocals will do me just fine. Take care, Peter.

Your harmonies
are a treat. This has a pure sound ... as if you are in my room and performing this (except for the overdubs which have just come in ... very nice) I like the slightly dissonant feel that comes across. Poetic lyrically. Enjoyed this.

Some very well crafted lyrics there Marc. Loved when those harmonies kicked it - gave the whole thing an added depth that I hadn't expected but really enjoyed. Some nice picking there too and the whole thing has an unhurried grace that really strikes you. Excellent stuff sir! That high harmony on "lights my way"at 01:30 is just beautiful. When I'd finished listening for the first time, I went right back and played it again. I can pay you no higher compliment than that.

Thank you!
It's so encouraging to read your comments. Thanks for giving it a chance! Glad it was worth it for you.

i don't know where those harmonies come from sometimes. i tend to wing them a bit and just let them come. If i like the sound, i let them stay. Whenever i try and plan harmonies, they never seem to work as well. Often it is the note that does not work on paper that gives it that special something at the right moment.

Thanks again,

Cheers now
