Description
I used the loop throughout this song for pretty much everything, with the exception of the bass, the recurring synth melody and the glockenspiel.

You can hear the loop in the lo-fi sounding sample that appears at the beginning and throughout the tune, the drum track is the loop and some additional parts I added on a separate track. all of the ambient sounds are that damn loop (either MIDI or treated audio), even the "guitar solo" at the end of the song and the outro synth solo.

I did use the MIDI loop, but to make it more of a personal challenge, I left the messed up timing in there and for every MIDI track, I bounced to audio immediately and then worked with edits of the audio tracks (I love working with audio).

I think the song could be a lot better, but I really didn't have as much time as I would have liked. I find parts of it to be really lazy; specifically the vocals and especially the chorus. i really should have re-recorded the vocals to get a better performance and overall mix/sound, but you get what you get. not the pinnacle of my songwriting, but that's okay by me though. it was more about finding a way to work within the limitations of the challenge. I really like doing these challenges as I always learn something. Looking forward to hearing everyone else's tracks and also looking forward to the one synth challenge (be still my geeky heart).

Clever
The bass effect is fun.
2nd verse really lifts it. I dig the chorus and think your "lazy" vocals work and are effortlessly cool.
Nice one

thanks
funny, I actually spent some time on the bass sound, and now I'm spending time worrying that people are listening on their laptop speakers and can't even hear it. thanks so much for the kind words.

Dude
I first listened using the iPad built in speaker (a sin) and the bass was what I first picked up on. It's there even on crappo speakers.
Nice one

This is
excellent work considering that seedy little loop sound had to be used. I think you worked a miracle to use it and it sound so part of the music. This is excellent and your vocals and lyrics sound tops not to mention the bass line.... good one, regards M

I used ES2 for the bass sound; I'll save it as a preset and send it your way. I have actually built up a decent collection of bass sounds, so if you want them....

already know ahead of time that you're gonna have a great melody no matter what. gotten to the point that that's what i look forward to when you post a new tune. and of course Say delivers. what was the challenge, to use one loop in various ways?

yup; take one horrible loop and turn it into something you might want to listen to. in this case it was a bad 80's hair metal lick. always fun to try and twist it to your will. thanks for the kind words. your last funk workout with Loob blew me away; want to see if I can re-mix it.

Love the explanation of how you did it. You are shorting yourself in how "much better" this song could be. It's great as is. The bass is like syrup.

say my name or.....
........who's your daddy.

imaginative use with the loop and the slice and dice editing.....works really well in the end result. the song has punch but also retains a certain mellowness. that solo at 3:30 is cool and the follow up after is slick.

I couldn't find anything to pick on. This is good. Bass sounded good on my subs. Not over-rumbly, not too weak.

You are pretty prolific for someone whose songs I find to always be fully-fleshed out and well arranged. I hope this took a really-really-long time. That would make me feel better.

ha! pretty damn good, I'd say. I had thought about using the midi loop for percussion in a new tune as well, I've done that in another LIOLI challenge... (like minds, sometimes). This came out really nice.

Wowser!
This is great! I shouldn't say it I suppose, but I will. This is my fave LIOLI 10 so far. [But they've all been really good, I must add] I just love that bass line running through. It's like I want to do, but can never quite get it right. I like that you left the mis-timed notes in. I altered them in mine! Most excellent.

loop
I have no idea what the loop sounds like, so the fact that this does not feel like a looped composition means you managed to let go of the loop and made a composition that's good on its own merits.

Muchly enjoyed.

what a cool vibe.....love the ba ba ba ba. the lazy vocals totally work here - but yes....there's a confidence issue that comes across.....you can always hear confidence in vocals....and sometimes it can screw the song....but it's cool here. this is a challenging song because it takes a while to slip in to the melody....but on second listen i'm totally in....and songs like that just get better and better the more you listen...and there's so much going on here for it to be the kind of track you never get bored of.....and that means it's a brilliant track. lover the simple harmonies....and especially the lead vocal at 2.40.....you've got a great voice....you should sing more. deep bows of admiration

Moody on outside edge of happy rhythms
There is a sense of shyness, of the sense that your hand will never be taken, your name will never be spoken, in how you deliver the vocals, almost with a closed jaw, like you are ventriloquyzing. Kind of a moody, angled, out of sync character out of the stream of the main. Nice textures.

A fine melody & vocal over a laid back groove. It feels like the singer is reaching out for something that he can't quite grasp.

Non stop flow
I didn't listen to the dry loop, but I would have never imagined that all of the lo-fi sounds in the song come from the same source.
The lazy feeling is like a lullaby (although the voice is not lazy all the time). It goes well with the track. Perfect for the practice of yoga - or perhaps electro-yoga.

i like it
as an artist empathy is a big deal but one of the most difficult things to learn is self empathy, so you're not always having that fight with yourself and instead you're open to investigations outside of yourself, and the thing i like about your songs is that they ooze self empathy, you don't get it and you know that nobody else is getting it either and you feel a solidarity with yourself that allows you to feel solidarity with others. i have no idea if that makes sense but i hear that in spades on this one.

Bells
The off-key, barely-audible electronic loops really give this song flair! The pitch-perfect vocals (both lead and harmonic) paired, at the same time, with the off-the-mark electric bells are brilliant. The bass keeps the whole thing cohesive and centered. It's tempting to make an 80s reference, but this song is better--and edgier--than lots of 80s stuff. Good work.
